Dear Friends in Christ,

On Tuesday of this week, I will be attending two meetings in Columbus: one to discuss ministry to Spanish-speaking Catholics, and one in the early afternoon with the Personnel Board to continue discussions with Bishop Campbell about assigning priests to various parishes throughout the diocese. Throughout the week, Fr. Schmit and I will be holding interviews with young parishioners who are candidates to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. We will ask the candidates about their level of understanding of what they have learned in their classes and about their personal readiness to receive this sacrament. On Thursday evening, I will meet with the parish Finance Council. Those are the commitments that I know about as I write this column; by the time the bulletin is printed there will no doubt be many more.

Next Sunday is Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion and the beginning of Holy Week. This is the week we have been preparing for since Ash Wednesday. All of the penitential practices of Lent are meant to prepare us to celebrate the Lord’s Passion, death, and Resurrection with purified minds and hearts. It is not too late to begin or renew your commitment to the works of Lent. Those bound by this rule may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted as necessary to maintain strength according to one’s needs, but eating between meals is not permitted. Beverages are not restricted.

SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM

In order to understand and better appreciate this special sacrament, parents must attend a Pre-Baptismal class. St. Mary offers this instruction four times a year on the second Sunday of the month from 2:00-4:30 p.m. in the Commons. Preregistration for the class is required. Baptisms are celebrated on Sundays of the month immediately following the 11:00 a.m. Mass. THE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS are once again holding their ever popular Fish Fries on Fridays during Lent, from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 1231 E. Center Street. Meal will consist of all-you-can-eat fish, french fries, coleslaw and dinner roll.

Cost is $9.00 for adults and children 12 and over; $8.00 for Senior Citizens 60 and over; $5.00 for children ages 5 to 12; and children under the age of 5 are free. There is a max charge of $30.00 for a family (family is defined as living under the same roof).

40 Days for Life during Lent. Faithful believers are praying that this effort will mark the beginning of the end of abortion in America. This peaceful prayer vigil will take place at an abortion facility in Columbus. Participants are asked to volunteer for one-hour shifts and sign a statement of peace. Good Friday Walking Stations of the Cross. Many facets of faith and justice will be the focus of the annual Good Friday Walking Stations of the Cross. The walk begins with opening prayer at St. Joseph Cathedral, 212 E. Broad Street, Columbus, at 8:00 a.m., Friday, March 30, 2018. Hundreds of participants from across the diocese will process to locations throughout downtown Columbus to recognize Jesus Christ’s suffering and crucifixion as well as to reflect on current areas of social concern. BiMONTHLY MASS OF HEALING MARCH 19, 6:30 P.M., SAINT JOSEPH CATHEDRAL. On the Solemnity of Saint Joseph, our bimonthly Mass of Healing and Healing Service will take place. Following the Mass, the Healing Service will begin with Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and Veneration of relics of the True Cross. Each person will then have an opportunity to speak individually with one of several priests present to discuss their particular situation and receive a prayer of healing; the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick will also be available. The Healing Service will conclude with Benediction. All persons who seek Christ’s healing are invited – especially those who suffer with physical illness and infirmities (e.g. cancer and other debilitating diseases and conditions), in addition to those who seek emotional and spiritual healing. All caregivers, family members, and members of the medical community are invited as well. Bimonthly Healing Masses take place at the Cathedral on the third Monday of the month; during the remainder of 2018 Masses are scheduled for: May 21, July 16, September 17, and November 19. LENTEN PROJECT:St. Mary Community Outreach Committee will be collecting for our Lenten Project this weekend, March 17 and 18. We will be collecting monies for Turning Point and both Homeless Shelters. “Lose Weight – Donate” and assist these community organizations that help those in need.
