AT THE ADVENT WREATH THE CHRIST CANDLE IS LIT: The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness on them light has shined. Our Advent journey is now complete. The darkness is gone. The Light of the World is here! Our hope has been met. Our preparations are done. Our joy has been made perfect. The love of God has come to live among us. And so, today, we light the candle of Christ.

The grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all. The long-awaited Christ has come! Celebrating the birth of our Saviour, we light this candle. Together, we will shine with the radiant light of Christ! CHOIR See how the shepherds summoned to his cradle, leaving their flocks, draw nigh with lowly fear; we too will thither bend our joyful footsteps. O come, let us adore him …

Holy and Gracious God, on this night your child Jesus Christ was born of the Virgin Mary for us and for our salvation; bless this crib which we have prepared to celebrate that holy birth; may all who see it be strengthened in faith, and receive the fullness of life he came to bring; who is alive and reigns for ever. Amen.

All 4 Child, for us sinners poor and in the manger, Fain we embrace thee, with awe and love; Who would not love thee, loving us so dearly? O come, let us adore him …

5 Sing, choirs of angels, sing in exultation, sing, all ye citizens of heaven above: 'Glory to God in the highest:' O come, let us adore him …

6 Yea, Lord, we great thee, born this happy morning;

Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. GLORIA IN EXCELSIS Music: Philip Matthias PRAYER FOR TONIGHT Good and gracious God, who gave us your Son, the Lord of the universe, wrapped in swaddling clothes, the Saviour of all, lying in a manger: on this holy night draw us into the mystery of your love. Join our voices with the heavenly host that we may sing your glory on high. Give us a place among the shepherds that we may find the one for whom we have waited, Jesus Christ, the Messiah and Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever . Amen. The Ministry of the Word - Please sit for the readings

FIRST READING Isaiah 9.2-7

he people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness on them light has shined. You have multiplied the nation,

you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as people exult when dividing plunder. For the yoke of their burden, and the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian. For all the boots of the tramping warriors and all the garments rolled in blood shall be burned as fuel for the fire. For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. His authority shall grow continually, and there shall be endless peace for the throne of David and his kingdom. He will establish and uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time onward and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this. Hear the word of the Lord, thanks be to God. PSALM 96: 1-4 & 9-13 (sung by the choir) Chant: Eric Ware

Sing to the Lord and bless his holy name: proclaim the good news of his salvation from day to day. Declare his glory among the nations: and his wonders among all peoples. For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised: he is more to be feared than all gods. O worship the Lord in the beauty of his holiness: let the whole earth stand in awe of him. Say among the nations that the Lord is king: he has made the world firm that it can never be moved; and he shall judge the peoples with equity. Let the heavens rejoice and let the earth be glad: let the sea roar, and all that fills it: Let the fields rejoice, and everything in them: then shall all the trees of the wood shout with joy before the Lord; For he comes, he comes to judge the earth: he shall judge the world with righteousness, and the peoples with his truth.

SECOND READING Titus 2:11-14

or the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all, training us to renounce impiety and worldly passions, and in the present age to live lives that

are self-controlled, upright, and godly, while we wait for the blessed hope and the manifestation of the glory of our great God and Saviour, Jesus Christ. He it is who gave himself for us that he might redeem us from all iniquity and purify for himself a people of his own who are zealous for good deeds. Hear the word of the Lord, thanks be to God. GRADUAL HYMN

While shepherds watched their flocks by night, all seated on the ground, the angel of the Lord came down

and glory shone around.

Fear not,ʼ said he (for mighty dread had seized their troubled mind),

ʻglad tidings of great joy I bring you and all humankind.

ʻTo you in Davidʼs town this day

is born of Davidʼs line a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord,

and this shall be the sign:

ʻthe heavenly babe you there shall find to human view displayed, all meanly wrapped in swaddling clothes

and in a manger laid.ʼ

Thus spake the seraph; and forthwith appeared a shining throng of angels praising God, who thus

addressed their joyful song: ʻAll glory be to God on high, and to the earth be peace; goodwill henceforth from heaven to earth

begin and never cease.ʼ Words: Nahum Tate (1652-1715) alt Music: later form of melody from Thomas Esteʼs Psalter, 1592

The HOLY GOSPEL - Luke 2.8-20

Choir Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia. ALL Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia. Choir Good news and great joy to all the world: today is born a Saviour, Christ the Lord. ALL Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia. Priest The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke ALL Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ.

There were shepherds living out in the fields near by, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, ʻDo not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.ʼ Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, ʻGlory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favour rests.ʼ When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, ʻLetʼs go to Bethlehem and

see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.ʼ So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told. The Gospel of the Lord: Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ. THE SERMON Rev Canon Gary Harch THE NICENE CREED is said (all standing) Let us together affirm the faith of the Church

We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,

the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge

the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Prayers of the People Let us pray for the world and for the Church RESPONSE Leader Lord, in your mercy, ALL sing Hear our prayer. Accept our prayers through Jesus Christ our Lord, who taught us to pray,

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

The Greeting of Peace Unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: And his name is called the Prince of Peace.

The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you.

All may exchange a sign of Peace OFFERTORY HYMN – Once in royal David's city A collection is taken up during this hymn to support the work of the church Verse 1 sung by the CHOIR

Once in royal David's city stood a lowly cattle shed where a mother laid her baby in a manger for his bed: Mary was that mother mild, Jesus Christ her little child. He came down to earth from heaven who is God and Lord of all, and his shelter was a stable, and his cradle was a stall; with the poor, despised and lowly lived on earth our Saviour holy. And through all his wondrous childhood, day by day like us he grew; he was little, weak, and helpless, tears and smiles like us he knew; and he feels for all our sadness, and he shares in all our gladness. And our eyes at last shall see him, through his own redeeming love, for that child so dear and gentle is our Lord in heaven above; and he leads his children on to the place where he is gone. Not in that poor lowly stable, with the oxen standing by, we shall see him: but in heaven,

set at God's right hand on high, when his children gather round bright like stars, with glory crowned.

Words: Cecil Frances Alexander (1818-95 alt) Music: Henry John Gauntlett (1805-176)

Descant: David Willcocks (1919-2015) During the hymn the gifts of the people are brought to the Lordʼs Table Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation. Through your goodness we have these gifts to share. Accept and use our offerings for your glory and for the service of your kingdom. Blessed be God for ever.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING

Priest: The Lord be with you All: And also with you. Priest: Lift up your hearts All: We lift them to the Lord. Priest: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All: It is right to give our thanks and praise. All glory and honour be yours always and everywhere, mighty Creator, everliving God. We give you thanks and praise for your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ, who by the power of your Spirit was born of Mary and lived as one of us. In your Word made flesh you have caused a new light to shine in our hearts, to give knowledge of your glory in the face of Jesus Christ. By his death on the cross and rising to new life, he offered the one true sacrifice for sin and obtained an eternal deliverance for his people. Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and singing:

SANCTUS & BENEDICTUS Music: Philip Matthias Merciful God, we thank you for these gifts of your creation, this bread and wine, and we pray that by your Word and Holy Spirit, we who eat and drink them may be partakers of Christʼs body and blood.

On the night he was betrayed Jesus took bread; and when he had given you thanks he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, ʻTake, eat. This is my body given for you. Do this in remembrance of meʼ.

Page 12: PARISH’DIRECTORY’ CHORAL EUCHARIST - Kangaroo … · Leader John Fraser Crucifier ... PROCESSIONAL HYMN ... tr. F.Oakeley, W.T.Brooke et al Music: Adeste Fideles, probably by

12

After supper, he took the cup, and again giving you thanks he gave it to his disciples, saying, ʼDrink from this, all of you. This is my blood of the new covenant shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.ʼ

Therefore we do as our Saviour has commanded: proclaiming his offering of himself made once for all upon the cross, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming again, we celebrate, with this bread and this cup, his one perfect and sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the whole world.

Renew us by your Holy Spirit, unite us in the body of your Son, and bring us with all your people into the joy of your eternal kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord, with whom, and in whom, in the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, we worship you, Father, in songs of never-ending praise:

THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD & THE COMMUNION We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, for we all share in the one bread. AGNUS DEI Music: Philip Mathias INVITATION TO COMMUNION The gifts of God for the people of God. If you are a communicant member of a church professing the Apostolic faith you are welcome to receive communion.

MOTETS (sung by the CHOIR during Communion)

Sweet was the song the Virgin sang when she to Bethlem Juda came and was delivered of a Son that blessed Jesus hath to name:

Lulla, lulla, lulla lullaby.

“Sweet babe,” sang she, “and eke* a Saviour born who vouchsafed from on high to visit us that were forlorn.”

Lulla, lulla, lulla lullaby. “Sweet babe,” sang she, and rocked him gently on her knee.

Lulla, lulla, lulla lullaby.

* eke = also Words: Williams Ballett (17th century)

This Christmas night Malcolm Williamson (1931-2003)

How sweet and clear above the sounds of war the clamorous bells are pealing their delight! The angels sing of glory as they soar among the manmade stars this Christmas night! And, once again, with spices and with gold three kings are riding through the sparkling snow to this poor lodging in the bitter cold, where Mary kneels within the lantern glow to watch he baby lying in the hay, and think about the wonder of his birth; and as he sleeps, to fold her hands and pray for peace to come upon this troubled earth.

Words: Mary Wilson COMMUNION CAROL Silent night, holy night: all is calm, all is bright round the virgin mother and child, holy infant so tender and mild, sleep in heavenly peace, Sleep in heavenly peace.

Silent night, holy night: shepherds quake at the sight,

glories stream from heaven afar, heavenly hosts sing: ʻAlleluia; Christ the Saviour is born, Christ the Saviour is born.ʼ

Silent night, holy night: wondrous star , lend your light; with the angels let us sing Alleluia to our King; Christ our Saviour is born, Christ our Saviour is born.

Words: Joseph Mohr (1792-1848), trans. John F Young (1820-85) alt Music: Melody by Franz Gruber (1787-1863)

COMMUNION SENTENCE (sung by the choir) Plainsong The word of God became man; we have seen his glory. Alleluia.

The Sending out of Godʼs People God of heaven, dwelling among us, we thank you for feeding us with this holy food. By your grace keep us faithful to your word made flesh that as his body in the world we may bring your presence to all people. Most loving God, you send us into the world you love. From Fr Gary, Priest at St Maryʼs.

Welcome to one of three Christmas Celebrations at St Maryʼs. The parish has much to give thanks for in the year 2016.

St Maryʼs has been blessed this year with many volunteer workers. These men and women have beautified and maintained the Church grounds; painted parts of the hall inside and out; built a BBQ area, restored benches, assisted with the

Page 18: PARISH’DIRECTORY’ CHORAL EUCHARIST - Kangaroo … · Leader John Fraser Crucifier ... PROCESSIONAL HYMN ... tr. F.Oakeley, W.T.Brooke et al Music: Adeste Fideles, probably by

18

preparation for numerous functions and improved the record keeping of the parish. They have worked enthusiastically and with joy.

One set of stained glass windows for the baptistery; and another set of leadlight windows for the Warriors Chapel have been donated to St Maryʼs. The parish went through a detailed design process in accepting these donations and the windows will be installed in 2017. Look out for them sometime after February.

St Maryʼs has been one of three parishes trialling the Pathways programme. This has helped us focus on all that we do in our parish to help connect people across our parish and make disciples.

The ʻPilgrimʼ introductory course and one of the next step courses will be offered during 2017. Following the well received study sessions on the Gospels in 2016, the Lenten Studies in 2017 will be on the letters of Paul. We will again use the book “Introduction to the New Testament” which was so helpful to those who attended.

Music continues to be an important part of Sunday worship and a number of quality concerts have been offered. Canticum celebrated their 20th year of singing and connection with St Maryʼs.

There is also much to keep in our prayers for the year ahead, both locally and in the wider world. The siege of Aleppo was often in the headlines in the latter half of the year and the consequences of events across the Middle East continue to ripple throughout the world. After Christmas liturgically we remember the plight of Jesus as a refugee and may we strive to continue to act for Peace.

The parish will break even financially at the end of 2016. We give thanks for the dedicated work and support of the parishioners who since July have turned around a potential loss. 2017 will present further financial challenges as traditional sources of income diminish.

Some of the events planned for St Maryʼs have been listed on the previous page. Keep an eye on our website as we continually update our list and add the details about the events. Prayers for you at home and your travels. Gary & Marie-Claire.
