Park County Historical Society Quarterly Newsletter July 2011 LETTER from the PRESIDENT Some highlights from 2010 The Glen Isle Tree: The 43 inch diameter ponderosa pine in front of the Glen Isle lodge was long dead and now dangerous because if it was blown over in a wind storm the tree would be a threat to the front porch and stairway to the lodge. The historical society received a $1,200 grant from Park County Historic Preservation Advisory Committee (PCPAC) to remove the tree. That was accomplished and the wood was donated to the historical society to heat the annex. The Keystone Bridge was painted and new beams, deck and handrail installed. The Installation of the handrails was not to the manufactures standard and the rails will be removed then reinstalled using the manufacture’s recommendation. The bridge was closed by the Park County building department because a bridge permit was not pulled before the restoration work started. An engineering drawing was needed to submit with the bridge permit application. David Pence, Pence Engineering, provided the drawing for the Historical Society so the bridge could be reopened. The construction of the restrooms and finishing the pathways has ended temporarily and will resume in late spring. The first ¾ mile of trail construction on Morrow Mountain was completed with 1.25 mile minimum scheduled to be completed by 12-30-2011. The trail constructed will resume with volunteers from Colorado Mountaineering Club furnishing crews for two weekends starting in late May. Thanks to Doug Stephens for making the arrangements with Colorado Mountaineering Club and REA in Littleton; also Doug and I completed a 16 hour stewardship and leadership training course at Volunteers Outdoors Colorado, and we are certified by Outdoor Stewardship Institute to lead volunteers in sustainable type trail construction. Fish habitat construction will be completed in the Platte River through the PCHS property sometime between July and October of 2011. That contract was approved by Park County for Freestone Aquatics as the contractor. Permission to modify the river along the PCHS border was given as required to Freestone Aquatics. The Corps of Engineers, Denver Water and Park County were all required to approve the contract. The status of the GOCO program mid May 2011: The parking lot on Bailey Water property is on track to be completed by Bailey Day June 18, 2011. The construction of the restrooms has been completed except for the painting of the exterior. Jean Stephens has painted the interior of the restrooms. New roofing has been installed on the annex. The plumbing is complete and in service as are the restrooms. The flagstone walkways are complete and the flower beds are ready for the planting of the flowers. Much stonework has been needed on the trail construction. The corridor of the trail is steep in areas so stone steps and retaining walls are needed. LETTER from the PRESIDENT Some highlights from 2010

The Glen Isle Tree: The 43 inch diameter ponderosa pine in front of the Glen Isle lodge was long dead and now dangerous because if it was blown over in a wind storm the tree would be a threat to the front porch and stairway to the lodge. The historical society received a $1,200 grant from Park County Historic Preservation Advisory Committee (PCPAC) to remove the tree. That was accomplished and the wood was donated to the historical society to heat the annex.

The Keystone Bridge was painted and new beams, deck and handrail installed.

LETTER from the PRESIDENT Continued from page 1

The Park County Historical Society is hosting the Park County 150th Anniversary at the McGraw Memorial Park on August 6, 2011. There will be numerous announcements along the way to highlight the event. The program will include Indian interpreters, Mountain Men Interpreters, history of mining, maps of the past, pictures of the past, storytelling and much more. The theme of the program is “Who We Are”, 150 years of Park County History.

The main activity the last year and a half at PCHS has been focused on the administration of the GOCO grant, which has taken us way from our purpose as an organization. That purpose is: To educate the public on Park County’s history. To discover, mark and preserve buildings and sites of historic or prehistoric significance. To collect, preserve, and display any items used by historic and prehistoric cultures prior to 1950. At this time, the majority of the GOCO grant requirements have been met and what is remaining is organized such as to not need the intense planning as required at the beginning of executing the grant requirements. I urge us to turn out attention to the purpose of PCHS and plan to fulfill our purpose as a historical society. Our mission also has not been on track. The Mission Statement: The Park County Historical Society (PCHS) is a preservation organization promoting the history and prehistory of the County through awareness and education for the citizens of Park County. The organization is dedicated to preservation, collection and stewardship through cooperation and communication. I request the board members and membership to recruit new members, to plan and execute fundraising programs, to select a historical site or topic and do the research as part of the preservation of Park County history so the research can be published, and used as part of the programs the PCHS will be holding starting in the near future. Broadcast the value of the Historical Society throughout the County, and to help establish satellite historical groups in the South Park area of the County. To begin accomplishing the tasks needed to meet our Mission Statement and Purpose Statement, PCHS will need an active membership. We need to grow the membership, so PCHS can expand and document research and can begin to reward the citizens of Park County with the rich history of Park County. Arthur Hall President
