Since 1992, the Park District of Highland Park has been ‘clowning around,’ providing a unique opportunity for campers to learn a wonderful variety of circus skills. Fun and challenging lessons teach skills such as high wire, teeterboard, stilts, unicycle, Spanish web, static trapeze, juggling balls and clowning techniques.

Throughout two decades, more than 1,400 children have enjoyed this life-changing adventure at Camp Big Top/Little Top. Each developed new skills and increased confidence in their abilities to meet new and often unfamiliar challenges.

And of course, no circus is complete without “A Big Show!” so each summer campers perform their newly-acquired skills in a final showcase for friends and family.

The most common refrain from campers and their families is how these experiences build great confidence! Long after camp ends, children benefit from learning to react to situations with “I can!” and “I’ll try” instead of “I can’t” attitudes. Campers also learn patience and persistence as they work to master skills over time.

The Park District is proud of all of our past and present campers for helping to make this an incredible experience for all involved. We thank the parents for allowing your child to partake in this unique experience and the staff for sharing your talent.

Come join the magic and excitement under the Big Top this summer! May all your days be circus days!

Years at Camp Big Top/Little Top!

Are you looking to get the most out of your summer? The Park District of Highland Park camps are…

Energetic. From the thrill of kayaking a rushing river to the passion of exploring arts and theater, our camps give kids a chance to discover and build upon their interests. All summer long, days are filled with loads of activities, games and time to kick back and have some good, old-fashioned fun.

Engaging. We believe in structuring our camps to involve and engage each camp-er as they learn, play and grow. Our camps not only bring the com-munity together but also provide an outlet for children to increase their self-esteem and their sense of who they are and what they love to do.

Enjoyable.Summer is a time to let loose and experience new activities. Our camps are full of fun for all ages, abilities and interests.

Established. It’s no secret that the Park District of Highland Park has one of the most highly respected camp programs in the area. We’ve been providing camps that keep the kids com-ing back year after year since the 1940s. Our well-trained, enthusias-tic staff works year-round to make each camp unique, special and fun to ensure kids have the best summer ever!

So find a comfortable chair and take a moment to browse through the brochure to choose your camp-er’s next memorable experience.

Age RequirementsWhen choosing an age-appropriate camp for your child, use the grade that your child will be entering in fall 2012. All campers in preschool programs must be of age by the first day of camp. Proof of age may be required; see individual camp listings.

Staff SupervisionEach camp is supervised by a qualified adult director. Some camps, depending on size, also have an assistant director. Each camp’s high school- or college-age counselors are chosen carefully by the Park District for their demonstration of maturity and enthusiasm. All camp staff members complete an extensive training program, which includes supervision and safety techniques, activity development and first aid.

Parent ManualsManuals for camps beginning June 18 are mailed on May 29. They contain all of the information you need to know about camp, including lunch, field trips, swimming activities, camp clothes, hours, busing schedules and more. It also includes an emergency form.

Health & SafetyEmergency FormThe Park District does not require children to have a medical examination to attend camp, but it’s important to accurately complete the emergency form that is included in your parent manual. If you have non-medical information regarding your child (i.e. phobias, social issues) that you wish our staff to know, please note this on your emergency form. If your child has a serious medical need please call the camp supervisor listed under each camp upon registration.

Camp NurseThe camp nurse is accessible to staff during camp hours by cell phone and reviews all emergency forms, medical forms and accident reports, assists in medical distribution, checks first aid supplies and assists in other areas.

Special Accommodations ADA InformationThe Park District encourages everyone to participate in camp! If you or a family member have special needs and would like to participate in a program, we will be happy to make reasonable modification(s) to meet your needs. Please indicate on the registration form or online if you would like information regarding our inclusion programs and/or specifically identifying any need for and request for reasonable modification(s) according to the Americans with Disabilities Act. The Park District provides recreational opportunities for all residents of Highland Park. People with and without disabilities are encouraged and invited to register for all Park District programs of interest. People with disabilities will not be discriminated against in the delivery of Park District programs. To discuss our policies, programs or services or to raise a claim of discrimination on the basis of disability, contact Liza McElroy, our ADA Coordinator, at 847.831.3810.

We are pleased to offer door-to-door bus service for our Highland Park residents, which reflects our continued commitment to providing convenience for you and the highest quality camp experience for your children. This service is available to Park District taxpayers only (please see residency requirements on page 24 for more information).

Registering for Bus ServiceBus service is provided as a "complete package" only — riders must use the service both in the morning and in the afternoon (no morning-only or afternoon-only riders). Busing is not available to children enrolled in any section of Before and After Camp.

To receive bus service, simply register for the bus transportation option under each camp’s registration section. If you do not register for bus transportation, you may request bus service by contacting the supervisor of each camp and making full payment no later than April 20 at 5:00PM. If you make a request for bus service after this date, and we can fulfill your request, an additional $75 charge per session will be assessed. No requests for bus service are accepted after May 18 at 5:00PM. If you are signing up for the second session, July 16-August 3, the deadline will be June 15 for bus service.

Pick-Up/Drop-off LocationsCampers are picked up at their homes except for those who live on roads inaccessible by the school bus. These campers must continue to walk to the nearest bus accessible intersection. As this year’s door-to-door service is expected to provide daily transportation for over 200 children, routes may average 45 minutes based on shared routes with multiple drop-off locations.

If you would like your child to be picked up or dropped off every day at a Highland Park location different from your home address (e.g. a babysitter’s house) please put your request in writing in a separate envelope by April 20 at 5:00PM. Send your request to the Park District of Highland Park, Attn: Bus

If you move after you register, written notice to the bus coordinator must be received prior to April 20 at 5:00PM to avoid the $75 service fee.

SafetyA bus counselor supervises each bus throughout the entire route to ensure safety and provide assistance. Buses are designated as School District 112/Park District camp buses. As always, it is your responsibility as parents to ensure your child’s safety when walking to and from the bus. Please make arrangements in the morning and afternoon to meet and supervise your children at the stop. Due to the large number of campers using our bus service, special colored backpacks are issued the first day of camp to identify them as Park District bus riders. Only children enrolled in Park District camps who have also registered for bus service may ride the bus.

Camp Bus RoutesDue to the revised locations of several of our camp programs for 2012, "route sharing" has been changed — some of the Park District camps that shared busing routes last year have been changed. Note that certain bus routes require a specific number of campers to sign up in order for bus service to be available. Please carefully read all of the following information.

If you’re a working parent or even if your child just wants more camp time, we’ve got the perfect extended-day solution! Send your children to a Park District camp and then enroll them in Before Camp and After Camp to complete their day.

Before and After Camp allow children to gear up for the day or wind down in a safe, low-key environment. Supervised fun ranges from free indoor and outdoor playtime to organized activities such as crafts, movies and board games. Snacks and drinks are provided. This smaller, mixed-age group allows for individualized attention and interaction with children of many ages in a respectful, noncompetitive environment.

Children in grades 1–5 who are also enrolled in a simultaneous Park District camp that runs 9:00AM-2:45/3:00PM may register for this camp. You may choose to enroll in Before Camp, After Camp or both. You must provide your own transportation to and from Before and After Camps (children will be bused to/from West Ridge Center to/from their main camp). When registering for your child’s main camp, you must register without bus transportation.

If you love to work with young children, Counselor -In-Training is for you!Participants entering grades 7–9 in the fall of 2012 may choose to be a Counselor in Training (CIT) for Camp Sunshine held at West Ridge Center or Ravinia School or KinderSports held at Sherwood School. For those entering grades 9 and 10 in the fall of 2012, CIT is available for Junior and Senior Crew held at Sunset Woods Park.

CITs will develop self-esteem and leadership abilities as they work with preschool-age, kindergarten or elementary aged campers who love to look up to CITs as role models. Participants assist our counselors in leading activities allowing them to learn safety techniques and communication skills. CITs must be energetic, have good communication skills and want to work with children.

Due to the popularity of this program, interested candidates will be interviewed for the positions. On November 11, 2011 and November 22, 2011, we’ll be holding interviews from 9:00–5:00PM. All interviews will take place at West Ridge Center. Please call 847.579.3121 to schedule an interview starting on Monday, October 24. Candidates who are chosen from the interview process will be able to register through the camp registration process. Selected candidates must complete timely registration in order to assure their spot.

CITs must bring a sack lunch and beverage to camp every day. They will receive a camp T-shirt on the first day of camp. Grades 9 and 10 Crew Camp CITs will also assist staff on camp field trips. Busing to and from home is not available for CITs.

Join us this summer — you’ll find the experience of working with young children extraordinarily rewarding.

Camp Sunshine & More SunshineAges 3–5

Camp Sunshine is the perfect “first camp” opportunity for children ages 3–5. And our mini camp in August, called More Sunshine, is the perfect end-of-summer experience for children ages 3–5.

Camp Sunshine introduces youngsters to the fun of summer through arts and crafts, show and tell, indoor and outdoor playtime, songs, games, group activities and fun special events (like going to Hidden Creek AquaPark, Rosewood Beach and various parks throughout Highland Park).

Campers register by age in one of three sections — separate camps are held for 3-, 4- and 5-year-olds. Each section of approximately 18 children is staffed by an adult site director with early childhood education training and college-age or high school-age counselors, for a 7:1 camper/staff ratio. At the 1-week More Sunshine, 3 and 4-year-olds and 4 and 5-year-olds will be grouped together in one session.

Our staff is highly attuned to the insecurities of young children who may be going to camp for the first time. Throughout each day, emphasis is placed on learning social skills such as sharing, taking turns, following directions and learning independence.

Five-year-olds attending five days a week at West Ridge Center and Ravinia School will participate in introductory swim lessons at the Recreation Center of Highland Park.

Parents are invited to Parents Night on Monday, June 4, 2012 at 7:00PM at West Ridge Center to learn more about the camp and meet the site directors and other parents. Parents are also encouraged to come to camp on the first day and participate with their children from 9:00-9:30AM. This “transition time” helps younger campers become acclimated to camp.

Bus transportation is not provided for Camp Sunshine or More Sunshine. Carpool arrangements are the responsibility of individual families.

Campers must bring a sack lunch and beverage with them to camp every day (additional snacks are provided by parents). Campers will receive a camp T-shirt on the first day of camp. Campers are encouraged to be potty-trained by the first day of camp.

Welcome to Junior and Senior Crew! These camps are two of our most popular Park District camps. If you’re looking for a true day camp experience with all of the best parts of summer packed into every hour, Junior and Senior Crew are for you! These delightfully diverse camps give campers the opportunity to participate in a wide range of outdoor activities throughout the summer, including arts and crafts, sports, games, music, dance, swimming, field trips and much more! Camp meets rain or shine, and each week we invite special guests to come to camp to lead us in an activity, such as science projects, cooking, theater or martial arts. During the week we will also have recreational swimming at Hidden Creek AquaPark.

For the safety of our Junior Crew campers, they will not be allowed to go down the slides or into the deep end while swimming at Hidden Creek AquaPark. For inclement weather there is a camp hotline, 847.579.3172. This is a recorded message system used to inform campers of where camp is being held.

In Junior Crew, your child will enjoy instructional learn-to-swim lessons at the indoor pool at the Recreation Center of Highland Park. We highly recommend

Junior Crew & Senior CrewGrades 1–2 & Grades 3–6

you supplement the introductory lessons offered in this camp with a swim lesson/class offered through the Recreation Center. Call 847.579.4051 for details.

Campers must bring a sack lunch and beverage to camp every day. Campers will receive a backpack and camp T-shirt on the first day of camp. Friendship requests will be honored and must be turned in by May 18. See pages 9, 24 and insert for details.

Our caring and compassionate staff consists of teachers and college and high school students who have participated in Park District programs for many years. They act as role models, creating a "neighborhood" environment that gives campers an opportunity to interact with a variety of children from all over the Highland Park area. Many of our campers form cherished friendships that last a lifetime!

An overall theme will empower the minds of campers as professional artists instruct them in each art form. Counselors supervise free time and organized games. In addition, a special "PAL" program (Providing Arts Leadership) matches older children with younger creating special bonds and providing role models.

The final performances/showings are held at West Ridge Center. Family and friends are invited to attend. The Junior performance is August 2 and the Senior performance is August 3. In order to fulfill final performance qualifications, we recommend campers attend all days and all weeks of this special camp unless there is an emergency. Campers must bring a sack lunch and beverage to camp every day. Campers will receive a backpack and camp T-shirt on the first day of camp. Friendship requests will be honored and must be turned in by May 18. See pages 9, 24 and insert for details.

Due to the unique nature and structure of this camp, please note that groups will not be changed after the first day of camp.

There will be a 4-week option again this year. At the end of the 4-week session there will be a showcase to display the work your budding artist has created.

Join us this summer — you’ll develop a lifetime’s worth of creative interests!

NEW! Process for 2-part payments! Read CarefullyFamilies that choose not to make full payment at the time of registration may sign up to pay camp fees in two equal payments. This program is available for online, in-person, mailed, faxed and dropped off registration. Due to the large number of families using 2-part payments and the financial tracking involved, exceptions cannot be made to the following procedures and guidelines: 1. Camps must be paid in full by April 17.

2. 2-part payments can only occur with the appropriate completed payment form at the time of registration or online with the ‘2-part’ option/button.

3. No 2-part payment plans can be honored for any registrations received after 5:00PM on March 23.

4. Camp payments paid in full at the time of registration cannot be changed to a 2-part payment plan.

How to complete 2-part payments by drop-off, mail-in and fax registrationComplete the enclosed 2-Part Payment Form in this camp brochure:1. Divide your total camp fees into two

equal payments.

2. Make your first payment at the time of registration (must be made by cash, check or credit card). This first payment is processed immediately.

3. You must also prepare and submit guarantee for your second payment at the time of registration.

• If you are paying by check, your second payment check must be postdated Monday, April 16 and it will not be cashed until that date.

• If you are paying by credit card (not online) the second payment will be charged on April 16.

4. The Park District reserves the right to withdraw a registrant for non-payment of camp in full. There is a $20 charge for a non-sufficient fund check (NSF).

5. If you are waitlisted for a camp, your payment will not be processed until your registration is assured.

Registration How to make a 2-part payment plan with online registration (residents only) (Supplement to P. 23)1. Choose your camp and select the

individual camper. You have the option of registering all campers before proceeding to ‘checkout’ or registering each individual camper and going through each ‘checkout’ separately. The benefit of separate registrations is the flexibility of using different credit cards for each registrant. This only applies to the first of the 2-part payments. You will have the option to use the same or different cards for your second payment(s).

2. On the ‘cart’ page check the box next to the words ‘2-part Payments’ for each camp for which you wish to pay 50% now and 50% by April 16, 2012.

3. When you go to checkout:a. The ‘charges’ section will show the

total for your transaction, before the payment is split.

b. The ‘payments’ section, ‘future due’ row will be the amount that is to be paid online by April 16. New! If you registered online, an account ‘balance due’ will appear on your account April 10. You must go online and make your final payment by April 16. Unfortunately, camp balances not paid online by this deadline will cause the registrant to be withdrawn from camp and a refund, minus $200 will be issued.

c. The Payments section ‘today’s payment amount’ row is the amount that will be charged to your card immediately.

4. Enter your credit card payment information for your first payment.

5 Click ‘complete transaction’ and then agree to the waiver. If you are successfully enrolled a confirmation will be emailed to you immediately.

6. If you wish to waitlist for a camp you must click the ‘Waitlist’ button and complete the checkout process. You will not be charged for the waitlist, and must receive a waitlist confirmation to indicate your request is received. If a camp spot becomes available, a recreation supervisor will contact you. Note: Please see the FAQ section online for detailed instructions about how to make your 2nd half payment online.

A love for the beach and water is a must for this nature-based camp as days are spent exploring and combing the shore for treasure. A new theme will be highlighted each week such as: Wonders of Water, Treasures of the Beach and Animals of the Lake, to name a few. Sand Trackers play games, go on treasure hunts, conduct experiments and get creative with crafts, all reflecting the theme of the week. A special celebration day such as “Hawaiian Day” or “Pirate Day” takes place each week. We will also go on a few field trips each session to add to our summer fun.

Your child will enjoy instructional intro-to-swim lessons at the indoor pool at the Recreation Center of Highland Park. We highly recommend you supplement the introductory lessons offered in this camp with a swim lesson/class offered through the Recreation Center. Call 847.579.4051 for details.

If you’re a fish-fanatic, this camp is for you! This 1–week mini camp is perfect for both boys and girls who love to fish — or who would like to learn! You’ll spend your days discovering the secrets to fishing success.

Along the way, you’ll learn about different types of fish, bait, lures and equipment, as well as aquatic ecosystems and lives of various fish. We’ll visit several local fishing spots and learn to predict what might make a good fishing hole.

And there’s more . . . we’ll go swimming, salmon fishing on Lake Michigan and learn to fly fish.

Campers will spend the day fishing, learning patience (a critical fishing skill!)

and how to encourage others. The staff are fishing enthusiasts, so kids will learn to fish the proper way right from the beginning! Campers must bring a sack lunch and beverage to camp every day. The Park District will provide a water bottle the first day of camp. Fishing gear is also provided.
