PARK LA BREA:MY HOME!

Park La Brea is a unique oasis within the City of Los Angeles.

For those of us who live here, it’s not difficult to see why: beautiful landscaped surroundings; a gated community; a community garden for the green-thumbed; a wide variety of services and programs for all residents including free movies on three days of the week in our comfortable theatre (checkout the movie listings in this newsletter); two cafes on the property (one at the Activity Center and the other at Burnside Circle); a free library with over 4,000 volumes; a resident play readers group; laundry facilities on site; free computer use at the Activity Center; Cityride bus service to Farmers Market and The Grove on Tuesdays and Thursdays; free Tai Chi; a beautiful salt water pool facility and a Fitness Center; cleaners and hair salon services; a Children’s Playground at Alandele Circle; a Video Rental store catering to both English-speaking and Korean customers; the LIFE Program for mature residents; a revitalized Neighborhood Watch Program to help keep Park La Brea safe and secure; and privately organized programs at our Activity Center which residents can attend. We rather doubt there are many communities in Los Angeles that offer their residents so much.

One of the important reasons for Park La Brea’s success as an attractive, livable community is the Park LaBrea Residents Association (PLBRA) made up of people like you who take pride in their surroundings, who support and enjoy the programs and projects that make our community unique. (Check the Community Activities page of this newsletter.)

As we continue to grow as a viable community PLBRA needs your support today both as a volunteer, and as a financial supporter.

Live Opera Performance from Elegy for the Jewish VillagesTuesday, August 6 1:00 – 2:00 PM Activity Center TheaterSimon Laks was a Polish composer and violinist, who became head of the prisoners' orchestra at Auschwitz. He was liberated by American troops at the end of the war, but it would take him until 1961 to set his feelings and memories to music in his Elegy for the Jewish Villages. The result is a powerful opera piece that expresses sadness, strength and hope. Through the USC Center for Polish Music, we are very fortunate to have two PhDs to explain the background behind Laks’ work and to perform the Elegy. The vocalist, Ana Guigui, has a PhD in Vocal Arts from USC and her accompanist, Ryan Dorin, has a PhD in Composition from NYU. This is a rare opportunity!
