Aloha, Parker School ‘Ohana!

On behalf of the Parker School Board of Directors, welcome to another outstanding year at Parker School showing that our investments of time and finances continue to bear fruit.

We remain among the top Advanced Placement test performers, which is even more significant, since all of our AP class students must take the national AP tests in their subjects. In case you did not know, Parker School’s is now officially the number one debate team in Hawaii. Academic excellence is upheld as the hallmark of our efforts, with yet another National Merit Scholarship recipient.

BUT, that is not all, Parker School students won the Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF) mixed paddling championship, AND won art awards, while also performing in first-rate dramatic offerings, showing that a Parker student is smart, creative, talented and well rounded.

However, our proudest achievement is that we have done all this without lessening the ‘ohana atmosphere that is the foundation of the high-quality young people that graduate from Parker.Parker School could not do any of this without the strong committed support from our many donors, of both funds and time. We have recently been able to successfully bring the Kāko‘o Fund to a close, raising over $200,000. In addition, the successful annual golf tournament, Fairways and Friends, and record-setting Kahiau dinner and auction event directly benefit our students both through financial aid and in tangibly demonstrating that our ‘ohana has a stake in their future.

Economic challenges continue to be faced by everyone, yet in spite of them, you have put your treasure where your heart is by supporting Parker School. We will persist in asking for your help to preserve and improve the educational gem that is Parker School by enhancing the physical plant, providing for the future and making it possible for us to deliver high-quality, value-based education to the youth of North Hawaii.

Your continued support is vital to ongoing operations and meeting our goals. Thank you again and please join me and the Parker School Board in the continued investment in our most important resource, our youth.

Sincerely,

Vaughan S. Winborne Jr.Chair, Parker School Board of Directors

Aloha, Friends of Parker School!

The 2012-2013 school year was an exciting one at Parker. We are proud to announce we had a U.S. Presidential Scholar and two National Merit Scholarship Program Finalists, two other seniors were named National Merit Scholarship Program Commended Students and one was an Outstanding Participant in the National Achievement Scholarship Program. We could not be more proud of this level of accomplishment, especially considering the size of our school! Now all of these graduates are off to an impressive array of colleges across the country and abroad. Our debate team won the 2013 state championship on O‘ahu, one student advanced to Nationals and the team earned National Recognition in the National Forensic League’s prestigious 100 Club. The middle school boasted a large number of students on honor roll and the headmaster’s list; the middle school science fair projects were extremely impressive and many students advanced to the district level fair. Lower school students continued to thrive under the care of our committed and excellent lower school teachers and staff. Huge leaps were made in language arts, math, science and social studies and remarkable projects took place throughout the year.

In sports, several upper school cross country runners qualified for states and one student placed first in the Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF) championship. Our mixed crew paddling team were the BIIF champions and Parker was the only Big Island school to send all three crews (girls, boys, mixed) to States. One tennis team member and two golf team members advanced to States. We launched a middle school paddling team which proved extremely popular. And finally, our Parker Bulls Soccer Club for ages six and up continued to be the soccer club in town, and many of our lower schoolers participated in a lower school cross country meet as well as Field Day and Jump Rope for Heart events.

In the arts, two upper school students advanced as Congressional Art Competition finalists, and again Parker students swept the Na ‘Opio Junior Juried Art Show. Under the direction of new dance and drama teacher Dr. Angela Alforque, the grades 6-12 students in our Dramatiques club put on very successful productions of Our Town and In the Heights, and the lower school Winter Concert was the best yet. The lower school May Day celebration lived up to its high standard of talent in hula, chanting (and festive colors!) and wowed the crowd.

All of the above accomplishments would not be possible without the generosity of our many supporters. We rely on the contributions of our ‘ohana to offer the best possible opportunities for our students. I’m looking forward to this fall, seeing the students enjoy the new middle school deck and remodeled science lab made possible by the recent Kāko‘o Fund campaign. Thank you for your continued support!

Aloha!

Parker School has had a very successful year! Even during these economic times we were able to come together as a team and surpass each of our fundraising goals! We are grateful for your support and dedication which helped make that happen.

Our Kāko‘o Fund capital campaign closed on June 30, 2013 and we surpassed our $200,000 goal! The campaign helped us realize the following improvements to our campus and pro-grams: science lab renovation; new deck to connect the middle school buildings; technology enhancements; a new high-quality event tent; and contributions to the Annual Fund for Educa-tion. The new facilities were celebrated with a donor “thank-you” event on August 14.

Parker School’s 10th Annual Scholarship Golf Tournament, Fairways & Friends, held on De-cember 8, 2012 at Hualalai, raised over $15,000 for financial aid. On March 2, 2013, over 290 people attended our 8th annual Kahiau dinner/auction gala for financial aid and helped the school raise over $200,000, a record so far for this event!

We thank the entire Parker School ‘ohana, parents, grandparents, alumni, faculty, staff, board members and friends who have given to Parker School in some way. Your support, whether through gifts to the Kāko‘o Fund or of financial aid through our annual Fairways & Friends Golf Tournament or Kahiau dinner/auction gala, has been invaluable. We are delighted to pres-ent the details of your efforts in the 2012-2013 Parker School Annual Report.

The Kako‘o Fund

On August 14, Parker School held a wine and cheese reception to honor Kāko‘o Fund donors and give them a preview of the campaign’s projects. Above, Headmaster Carl Sturges addresses donors as they stand on the new middle school deck. Above right, Science Department Chair Mindy Higgins talks about some of the features and capabilities of the newly remodeled science lab.
