Enrichment Day for Gifted Students from the Henry Parkes Learning Community To end Term 3, Year 9 students shared the Design Thinking skills process with Year 5 & 6 students from Parkes East and Parkes Primary schools as part of our gifted enrichment program. Some of our PHS students learned this problem-solving process at the Game Changer Challenge in Dubbo earlier in the term, and revisited their experience to teach their peers and younger students (kids teaching kids is a powerful learning tool!)

The Design Thinking process begins with empathy, trying to understand what the problem is and who has the problem, in order to create an effective and appropriate solution. It also places a lot of emphasis on using the imagination to come up with ideas and testing them before deciding on a final design.

Our problem was the increasing rates of loneliness and anxiety in young people: the twofold solution was that Year 9 students designed and made a pet rock to give to their younger buddies, and the Yr 5 & 6 students created an enclosure in which their pet rocks could happily live.

Apart from learning new thinking and collaborative skills, all students made new connections, had fun and finished the day feeling positive and enthusiastic.

Open Girls Cricket Team Into The Western Region Finals

Parkes High School Open Girls Cricket team had an outstanding win over Wellington High School in the semi-final of the Western schools open girls’ cricket competition. Parkes High batted first scoring 4/330 from 40 overs, (Maddy Spence 106 retired, Abigail Simpson 98, Marites Woods 55 retired, Ellen Dolbel 20 retired) defeated Wellington 10/68 in 17 overs (Maddy Spence 4/19, Marites Woods 2/8, Gracie Jones 1/3, Jordan Moody 1/11, Abigail Simpson 1/20).

All girls performed brilliantly with Maddy scoring her first century off 72 balls, Abigail falling just 2 runs short of another century (which would have been her 3rd in 3 games!), Marites Woods scoring her 55 runs from just 33 balls, Ellen getting 20 from 20 balls, Holly McColl and Jordan Moody getting 1, Gracie Jones 2 not out and Jolie Norman 4 not out.

After a quick lunch break the girls then went out and restricted the runs for Wellington whilst taking regular wickets. The girls fielding was outstanding with catches by Ellen Dolbel, Abigail Simpson and an amazing diving catch by Marites Woods who also performed a beautiful direct hit run out.

The girls are to be congratulated on their performance which will now see them play in the Western Regional final! The team are pictured below (Absent Sarah Hunter).

Open Boys Cricket Parkes High School Open Boys Cricket were unfortunately beaten in their round 3 match of the Alan Davison Shield by a strong Dubbo Senior Campus. The boys put in a good performance, but could not match the older Dubbo outfit. Dubbo won the toss and set a run chase of 277. Hunter Hawke bowled well taking 6/46. Toby Thorne assisted with 2 wickets for 40, while Harry Bayliss took 1/52 from his eight overs. Parkes were unable to maintain the run chase and despite a good performance from Hunter Hawke with 42 runs, Royce Simpson 27 and Geordie Duncan 24 runs.

Principal’s Report

Important Attendance Information

Every school day students should be at school engaged in their learning so they are able to develop their knowledge, skills and understanding and strive to reach their potential. If a student is sick, their parent or care provider needs to give a written explanation and or a medical certificate to the school the first day they return or contact the school the day of the absence. The reason for an absence from school cannot be changed after 7 days from the absence. If a written explanation is not received or the reason is not valid, eg getting a haircut, then the absence is recorded as unjustified. I understand that there are circumstances where a parent or care provider needs to ask for permission for leave, for example, attending a funeral. Please do this in writing, addressed to the Principal, prior to the student being absent. If a student needs to attend an appointment, eg with a doctor or specialist, please attach the appointment card to the note as supporting evidence. Family holidays will no longer qualify for an exemption from school. These will be granted under the leave provision and will count as absences from school. Please note that students cannot be paid to work during school hours.

Congratulations to our new Student Representative Council leadership team; Faith Hanstock and Nicayden Greenwood elected as School Captains, Josephine Bayliss and Jackson Guy elected as Vice-Captains and Kyah Turnbull, Meika Lovett, Harrison MacGregor and Archie Lickess all elected into the senior SRC leadership team. Ms Abby Bookless will take over as SRC Coordinator as Mrs Hannah Hawker is going on maternity leave at the end of November. Mrs Hawker and Ms Bookless have already been working with the students this week to map out their goals for 2020.

Our Year 12 students have commenced their HSC examinations. Unfortunately we had an issue with the clocks not being changed for daylight saving time. I apologise for this oversight and have submitted a misadventure form to NESA for all our students who sat their first English examination in the hall. The students have shown maturity and resilience in their handling of this situation.

I have had very excited and happy Year 12 students let me know that they have already received offers of early entry to a variety of Universities. I have sent emails to our year 12 students with information about scholarships. Information can also be found in Mr Duncan's Careers News. Please remember the Townsend Scholarship; only for students of Parkes High School attending the University of Sydney or University of New South Wales and only in the schools of Dentistry, Medicine, Law, Architecture, Agriculture, Veterinary Science or Engineering.

Our Rural Fire Service (RFS) Cadets will travel to Dubbo to receive their certificates next week after a full day of putting their skills to the test this week. The students learn and experience lifesaving skills and the opportunity to develop their leadership skills throughout the program. Mr Terry Job and Mr Anthony Carter along with volunteers Mrs Vickie Williams, Mr Frank Guise and Mr Geoff Massurit have been working with the students once a week for 10 weeks. Mr Job worked with Parkes High School to introduce this program back in 2004 and we have had a group of Cadets every year since with Parkes High School being the longest continuing running of the Cadet program. Mr Job and Mr Carter are committed to the importance of the program in saving lives and the benefits to our community.

This term, Mr Warren Murray is relieving Head Teacher of TAS while Mr David Warburton is on leave. Mrs Helen Corke is relieving Head Teacher Wellbeing leading into Mrs Hannah Hawker taking maternity leave. The French Rugby League team will be visiting us on Tuesday 29 October. They will be working with Year 7 Language students and helping in a cooking class! Our staff are undertaking training in anaphylaxis and CPR to ensure we can react in an emergency. All staff have to be current with Emergency Care training. This training is mandatory for staff in NSW public schools. A large proportion of staff at Parkes High School also have First Aid training. Thank you to our parents and caregivers who are continually supporting our school and fostering pride in our school through their children wearing our school uniform. Most items of our school uniform are available from our school office. Please be mindful that our school uniform has been ratified by our P&C and as such it is a core rule and requirement of all government schools that students wear school uniform. Our next P&C Meeting for 2019 will be held in the Conference Room (just along the corridor from the front office) on Tuesday 26 November at 7.30 pm. This will be the last meeting for the year. I look forward to seeing all of our new and continuing parents.

Please contact the school (6862 1844) or make an appointment if you need to discuss any aspect of your child’s education or if you need clarification on any issues or events your child may be involved in. Please be aware that all visitors to the school, including parents, must report to the office in Albert Street. At Parkes High School we are safe, respectful and responsible. Have a safe and relaxing holiday break. Mrs Sandra Carter - Principal

If you are sitting your HSC exams in or after 2020 you will need to meet a minimum standard of literacy and numeracy to receive your Higher School Certificate.

Literacy and numeracy skills are key for success in everyday life. Achieving the HSC minimum standard means you will have a level of skills necessary for success after school.

Students show they have met the HSC minimum standard by passing online tests of basic reading, writing and numeracy skills needed for everyday tasks. The minimum standard online tests are not based on NAPLAN.

Students master basic skills at different stages so there are multiple opportunities available for students to understand what to expect and pass the minimum standard online tests, from Year 10 until a few years after Year 12.

Some students will be eligible for disability provisions for the minimum standard tests, or an exemption from the HSC minimum standard requirement.

Important changes to the HSC minimum standard

From last year, Year 9 NAPLAN tests will no longer be available as an early way for students to demonstrate the standard. This change has been made to ensure NAPLAN remains focussed on its diagnostic purpose and to reduce unnecessary stress on young people. PLEASE REFER TO THE LINK BELOW FOR MORE INFORMATION http://educationstandards.nsw.edu.au/wps/portal/nesa/11-12/hsc/hsc-minimum-standard
