Secrets To Successful Writing - Morris Gleitzman

On Wednesday September 12, a group of PHS Year 7 students visited Parkes Shire Library to learn about writing from one of Australia's most successful children's authors, Morris Gleitzman. Morris discussed his experiences as a writer, how his ideas develop into books, and even shared with students the secret to writing the ever-elusive first sentence of a story!

It was an entertaining and informative afternoon, and we thank the Library for inviting us along. Mr Pinkstone and Ms Stevenson would also like to congratulate our students on their fine manners and responsible behaviour. You represented the school beautifully!

Mr Brendan Atkinson, Sefton High English teacher, came up with the idea and contacted Ms Belinda Crain, PHS PDHPE teacher and Year 12 Year Advisor. Dancing Divas At The Disco The Parkes High School Student Representative Council (SRC) has listened to their peers and organised the first disco for Parkes High students in a long long time.

The disco was held in the LP Johnston Hall and was attended by over 200 students, all saying they had a wonderful time. The SRC students had started lobbying to have a dance last year and this year under the supervision of Relieving Principal Mr Duane Rhall and many of Parkes High’s dedicated staff, it came to fruition.

Parkes High Captain, Emeline Lavaka was extremely pleased with the turn out for the disco. “The kids have been asking for a disco for a long time now, so the SRC put a very detailed proposal together to Mr Rhall and he agreed. Organisation was extremely important for an event like this to work, we even met with the local Parkes police to discuss ideas to make the disco run smoothly. We don’t have much to do in Parkes, so we thought it was something important for the student body to make happen” said Emeline.

The students were entertained by DJ Garmo for three hours of non-stop music and the SRC would like to thank him and the staff for helping make the Disco a huge success.

Wearing It Purple - Empower Together On Friday 31 August, Parkes High School held “Wear it Purple Day”. This year’s theme was “Empower Together”, and Parkes High took a stand for inclusion.

Days like “Wear it Purple Day”, show young people that they all have a place, and that they are supported. Staff and students wore something purple to show their support for diversity. A small but enthusiastic group of students and teachers transformed the quad with rainbows, pictures and positive messages, creating a positive vibe throughout the day.

Thank you to those who helped, and to those who supported the cause. We look forward to another celebration of diversity with Wear it Purple next year!

Uniform Pool Needs Winter Clothes Have your children grown out of their uniforms? Consider making a donation to the Parkes High clothing pool!

We have helped over 50 students with donations of jumpers, skirts, shirts and pants. Please launder, fold and drop into the office in a plastic bag. We welcome any donations. Thank you!

Getting Active At PHS National Health and Physical Education Day was held on September 5, and Parkes High students and staff really got into the spirit of the day. Staff and Year 12 students dressed up in their finest active wear and had lots of fun while importantly sending the message that daily physical activity is extremely important.

The Australian Council for Health, Physical Education and Recreation (ACHPER) organises the national day to bring attention to the fact that Australian school children are ranked among the worst in the world when it comes to their physical activity levels. To tackle the lack of physical activity problem, ACHPER suggests that kids need to be taught skills and have better knowledge and understanding of how to lead active and healthy lifestyles. That’s why National Health and Physical Education Day has been designed to raise awareness of, and advocate for, a greater focus of Health and Physical Education in all schools.

Parkes High held a teacher versus student volleyball game during lunchtime, which was quite the spectacle, with a lot of fun had by all. The important theme and message by Parkes High and in particular the PDHPE staff was to be active every day and it is hoped that all students take up the challenge and embrace being active.

Brilliant Effort By All Involved Congratulations and many thanks to the dedicated parents, students, staff and future students who donated their time to tidy up around the school last Saturday. The P&C working bee was well attended and with the beautiful spring weather over the weekend they chopped, weeded and cleared up across the school.

This was a great initiative from the P&C and with another working bee in Term 4 planned we would love to see more helpers come along and continue the work they started on the weekend.

Again many thanks to everyone involved, your efforts are truly appreciated by the whole school community.
