WEEK 1 TERM 2 Commencing Tuesday 30th April 2019

Welcome back to school for what we are sure will be a wonderful Term 2 at Parkview Public School. I trust that everyone enjoyed the Easter period with family and friends and we look forward to engaging in what will be a dynamic term of learning. The holiday period was a busy one in our school with the replacement of all of our covered walkways around the school as well as the expansion of the shade area near the Primary Bubblers. Mr Bruce Staines has also been working very hard on the school grounds which look immaculate for the commencment of the new school term.

The holiday period was also significant for our country’s annual observance of ANZAC Day. It was tremendous to see so many young Parkview Community members either representing our school, their family or other community organisations in the Leeton RSL Sub Branch March or Dawn Service last Thursday. It is heartening to see the respect that is still shown by so many families for the sacrifices made by so many Australians in all theatres of war. This respect was also evident at our own school ANZAC Observance which was held in the last week of the term. Our School Leaders did a wonderful job of leading the school through what was a touching tribute to the ANZACs. Photos from both events appear later in the newsletter. The last week of the Term 1 was a huge one for all involved in our community. It started with some great success for our students in the sports of netball, rugby league and swimming (full details in Talking Sport) and finished with some richly deserved Reward Days for the children. In between we hosted another incredibly colourful and enjoyable Easter Hat Parade. It was tremendous to see so many community members in the school for this event. Thank you to everyone who worked collaboratively with their children to make such wonderful designs and participate in this unique experience. Award winners from the day are outlined below: KC: Hunter Heath and Chloe McWhinnie KE: Brax Nean and Ava Weymouth KT: Alec Lashbrook and Tori Stanley 1C: Caleb Foote and Indi Ohlsen 1DG: Jed Crowe and Hannah Anderson-Marshall 1HD: Hayden Stokes and Ivy Rouget 2B: Blake Leighton and Amelia Murcia 2M: Blake Heath and Mya Nean 2/3H: Xavier Chilko and Grace Curry 3H: Ira Simcoe and Briley Clancy 3/4Q: C-Jay Clarke and Samantha Ramponi 4T: Jaskirat Singh and Isabella Mills 4/5D: Thomas Weir and Sienna Ashton 5P: Isaiah Forrester and Pixie Wynn 6B: Harley Rouget and Skye Tuckett 6G: Corey Spicer and Daniella Draper

The first week of term may be a short one but there is plenty happening as we set ourselves for a massive term. Please consider the following as you plan your week:

Uniforms We often receive many enquiries regarding the appropriate uniform to wear at the start of Term 2. The simple answer is there is no right or wrong uniform to wear early in Term 2. As the weather is unpredictable, we encourage parents to make a decision based on the daily conditions as to what uniform (summer or winter) your children will wear each day. We do request that children commence wearing Winter Uniform from Monday, 20

th May. By this time the weather should have turned sufficiently

to make the wearing of the warmer Winter Uniform a comfortable thing to do. If you have any questions please do not hesistate to contact the school.

Woolworths Earn and Learn

It’s back!!!

Keep an eye out for stickers.

The Woolworths Earn and Learn reward program for schools is back for 2019. Parents and extended family are asked to collect stickers for our school. This can be done by sticking them on a card and placing them in the Parkview box at Woolworths or by sending them into school for us to manage. Stickers will be in stores between 1st May and 25th June 2019. The more stickers we have, the more points we can exchange for resources. In the past we have benefitted by receiving literacy, numeracy and sport resources as well as an outdoor table setting. Tell your family and friends from far and wide. Happy collecting!

TALKING SPORT – WEEK 1, TERM 2

NSWPSSA Swimming Championships

Parkview were represented by eight students at the NSWPSSA Swimming Championships held at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre on the

final day of Term 1 (Friday April 12th

). The day was an incredibly exciting one for all members of our community with our school being able to view our students’ achievements in the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre by way of livestream courtesy of the NSWPSSA. For our competitors, qualifying for this event represented the greatest number of Parkview students ever to represent at one state meet and the children really enjoyed swimming in the same hallowed waters that graced champions such as Ian Thorpe at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. Perhaps inspired by the famous Australian athletes honoured at the entry to the pool, many Parkview Swimmers produced personal best performances to leave the State Championships justifiably proud. Daniella Draper swimming in the 11 Years Girls Backstroke produced a personal best time of 42.13 to take almost two seconds of her qualifying time in a super impressive display. Meanwhile our talented relay teams also did our community proud. The Senior Girls Relay Team of Amelia Irvin, Daniella Draper, Chelsea Blacker and Ruby Miller produced their third successive personal best as a team, taking almost a full second off their qualifying time to stop the clock at 2:32.36. The performance saw the team also improve their Riverina ranking, qualifying second from our region but finishing the fastest ranked school in the Riverina for the year, something that is an outstanding performance. The Senior Boys Relay team of Kobe O’Callaghan, Tallis McMillan, Connor Holden and Kian Henman also produced some outstanding performances to stop the clock at 2:35.76. The team produced a time quite close to their personal best and maintained their second placed Riverina ranking for the event. Thanks is extended to the families who travelled to Sydney to support the children and also to the large number of well wishes who remained in Leeton but provided great support for the kids through messages and by watching the live stream. It was certainly an experience the kids will never forget!

LNPSSA Netball Championships Parkview Public School has claimed the LNPSSA

Netball Championships for the second time in three years following an entertaining day of competition at the Leeton Stadium on the final Monday of Term 1. Drawn to play Small Schools in the opening round of the day, the team played some good netball to overcome a determined opponent and qualify for the final of the competition. For Parkview, Chelsea Blacker was prominent in attack while Lana Simcoe and Sharna Morriss produced some effective netball in the mid-court and Ruby Miller was strong in defence. Finals Scores Parkview 39 Small Schools 1 The final of the competition saw Parkview matched up with

Leeton Public School who defeated Narrandera PS to make the final. The game was a pulsating match up played in front of a raucous crowd of more than 500 spectators in the Leeton Stadium. Parkview sprang out of the blocks early to establish a 4-0 lead thanks to some excellent combinations through the mid-court led by Taylah Axtill. Leeton PS fought back however, placing Parkview under pressure to narrow the deficit to just one at half time. The second half saw more of the same with Leeton PS taking a one goal lead with just 7 minutes remaining before Parkview assumed control, Amelia Irvin producing some excellent shooting and Holley Krause really stepping up in the defensive circle to help Parkview to a 9 goal victory and the LNPSSA title. Parkview now progresses to the fourth round of the NSWPSSA Knockout. Finals Scores LNPSSA Final Parkview 22 Leeton 13 From the day four Parkview students; Amelia Irvin, Taylah Axtill, Chelsea Blacker and Lana Simcoe were selected to represent LNPSSA at the Riverina PSSA Netball Championships to be held at the Narrandera Stadium this Thursday. We congratulate all the girls on this achievement.

LNPSSA Rugby League Championships Parkview’s representative Rugby League team played against a very agile

Narrandera outfit in the first round of the LNPSSA Rugby League competition. Parkview crossed the line first with a try to captain Luca Pitt. Narrandera hit back in the next set to level the scores. Another five minutes passed, then Elijah Berney capitalised off a solid run and offload from Jamane Lloyd, scoring under the posts. Elijah was successful with the conversion. Some tired defence from Parkview leading into the half time break allowed Narrandera to cross the line again and be within two at half time. Narrandera were first to score in the second half but only lead for a short time before Peter Moller took a hard run and burst across the line. Two minutes later, Narrandera jumped ahead again. Parkview were not giving up, maintaining strong attacking pressure. Great vision from Luca Pitt to deliver a long pass allowed Jamane Lloyd to cross the line and claim victory. Jamane displayed solid defence with some hard hits, while Kyis Stevens-Davis was strong across the park - taking kicks from the air, making try-saving tackles and working hard in attack. Benji Roden also was gallant in his defensive efforts. Full Time Parkview PS 18 (Tries: Luca Pitt, Elijah Berney, Peter Moller, Jamane Lloyd; Conversions: Elijah Berney 1/1) Narrandera PS 16 In the zone final, Parkview battled it out against a faced-paced, well-drilled Leeton Public School. Scoring four tries in the first half, Leeton Public School displayed high-quality rugby league skill across the park. Parkview continued to work hard for their possession and were led by Peter Moller making good yards. Peter, along with Charlie Watson stepped up the intensity and spurred on their team. The second half continued in much the same manner as the first with Leeton Public School crossing for another three tries. Elijah Berney played well in the halves and Kobe O'Callaghan started to make some good ground. In the final minute, Charlie Watson took a penalty tap and charged at the line, bursting over to put Parkview on the scoreboard. Full Time Leeton PS 28 Parkview PS 4 (Tries: Charlie Watson) A huge thanks is extended to the community members who came to the venue to support the team and also to Mr Stuart Browne who coached and trained the team in preparation for the event.
