ANNOUNCEMENTS
MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
The day after we started Sefer Bamidbar, the Book of Numbers, BAYT members ‘came out’ in record numbers for our first ever Zoom Annual
General Meeting. Record attendance, apparently much greater than any prior AGM. There may be many reasons you chose to participate. I will
assume for now it wasn’t COVID induced boredom. Most of you joined because of your deep concern over the financial health of our beloved
BAYT.
Serving on your Executive Committee for the past year, financial concerns topped our agenda most every meeting. Some concerns, cultural and
institutional, first became apparent to me as your Treasurer over a decade ago. Some developed over time. And then COVID hit us like a brick
wall.
Saner minds may have declined to assume the Presidency. As a “positive deviant” in Meyers Briggs jargon, I tend to see things different. Our
financial woes are a chance to get it right. Systematically addressing our financial challenges will foster a stronger-than-ever BAYT. While im-
mediate past president Zac Kaye has no choice, returning Executive members David Vodianoi, Laya Witty, Danny Diamond, David Kaplan and
Aliza Gershuni together with new members Chaim Levy and Lindsay Salmon all see opportunity at hand to create a stronger-than-ever BAYT.
You may or may not have been watching me on Sunday’s AGM. I saw you, a couple of hundred concerned members coming together as one.
Even without speaking, I heard you loud and clear as one concerned voice, as did my fellow Executive members.
Those who know me will tell you I back my words up with action. Some of you may have something more to say. If you choose to reach out,
please be constructive, respectful and prepared to act. Complaining and second guessing are easy but solve nothing. Problem solving requires
thought and effort. In the blunt words of a mentor from my Boston days long ago, “Don’t just ask questions, give me solutions.” Please be a bit
patient; there are hundreds of you and only one of me.
Even if you didn’t speak at the AGM, we heard you. Now it’s time for collective action. Together, a stronger-than-ever BAYT is at hand.
Shabbat Shalom.
President
Jeffrey Brown
REOPENING UPDATE:
On Monday, Premier Ford released a new set of rules, allowing, as of this Friday, an expansion for prayer services and other gatherings to go from
5 to 10 people. It appears as if the province is also allowing religious facilities to become 30% occupied, regardless of numbers. The news
is HERE. This is obviously a game-changer for holding minyanim on our property. We must emphasize that the province is trying its best to create
a balance between public safety and managing the economy. Our shul must do the same, but when it comes to tefillah b'tzibur, we must err on the
side of your safety. Because there are various ambiguities that still remain about houses of worship, the province plans to release more detailed
protocols this Friday. Our BAYT reentry task force met this week and we have some tentative plans of reopening shortly. Our current plan is to
wait one more week beyond the province's opening on this Friday. This will give us the opportunity to (a) study the new guidelines to be issued by
the province on Friday, and (b) monitor the rates of new virus occurrences within the province, and ensure that it is still safe to open for minyanim.
In the meantime, to register for minyanim, which will be necessary to make sure that we don't exceed a safe number for social distancing, please
click HERE. Please note that when we do reopen for minyanim, we will begin in the parking lot, and everyone will be required to wear masks, as
well as to bring their own siddurim. Our initial plan will be for Mincha/Maariv only. Once we see that minyanim are running smoothly and safely,
we will then we will expand to Shacharis.
I have been asked by multiple individuals my opinion on backyard minaynim at this point. Once the province's new, more relaxed policy kicks in
this Friday, it will be permissible for groups of 10 (10 MAXIMUM) to assemble for minyanim in backyards. That said, it is up to each person or
persons organizing these minyanim to ensure that each attendee is wearing a mask, is properly distanced, and brings their own siddur/chumash.
Please keep a record of each person who attends the minyan so that in the event that someone in your minyan gets the virus, you will have a way to
apprise all the participants that they must get tested. You should not allow anyone who is over 65 or who is in any way health-compromised to
attend your minyan. You should not make kiddush or serve any food. If you have a sefer Torah, only the baal keriah should get the aliyot. In sum:
We have received reports from other communities that there were new cases of Covid that were directly traceable to backyard minyanim that were
not careful with safety protocols. You must assume responsibility for the health of each and every person who attends your minyan. This should
not be treated lightly.
I'm suggesting that it would be in everyone's best interests to wait just a few more days before assembling for minyan. I emphasize that for the time
being, it is still considered a "l'chatchila" and totally acceptable to continue davening b'yechidus, without a minyan. No one should in any way feel
pressured or halakhically compelled to daven with a minyan at the present time.
Based on the above, our first planned minyan will be for Mincha and Kabbalas Shabbos in the shul parking lot on Friday evening, June 19. Please
note that no one who is not registered for the minyan will be allowed to attend.
Wishing you a beautiful, peaceful, and happy week.
Rabbi Daniel Korobkin

YAHRZEIT LIST:
FOR FRIDAY, JUNE 12 - THURSDAY, JUNE 18
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Weekly Halachah - R’ Mordechai Torczyner – [email protected]
I was washing netilat yadayim for bread. After one pour, my wet hand touched my dry hand. Do I need to start again?
The goal of washing netilat yadayim for bread is to remove a low level of ambient impurity from one's hands. We
ascertain that there is no dirt on our hands, then pour a first round of water, which purifies our hands, but the water re-
maining on our hands is now impure. Then we pour a second round of water, which purifies the water on our hands.
[Some pour a third round, for reasons beyond the scope of this paragraph.]
Because the first round of washing leaves the water on the wet hand impure, touching the wet hand to the dry hand adds
new impurity to the dry hand, and netilat yadayim cannot remove that impurity. Therefore, one should dry both hands, and
then start washing again.
However: If the first pour on the wet hand contained at least four ounces of water, then one need not dry and re-start; that
quantity of water does not become impure.
