Welcome

We are thrilled to welcome a feast of events to Brighton Dome and our partner venues from this Autumn through to Spring 2020.

Experience artists and performances from across the globe, with a diverse dance line-up that includes revolutionary Afrobeat-infused dance (p24-29), daredevil Finnish circus and an unrivalled cast of lions, tigers and Paddington Bear this Christmas (p41-47) and so much more music, comedy and family events.

We also want to share an update on the refurbishment of the Corn Exchange and Studio Theatre. The building contractors, R.Durtnell & Sons Ltd, have ceased work on the project having entered into a Company Voluntary Arrangement. Together with Brighton & Hove City Council, we are determined to complete the project as quickly as possible and we are busy collaborating with artists and organisations on creating an exciting programme of events once reopen. Thank you for your support in helping to restore these historically important venues and the generous donations we continue to receive via our Build Brighton Dome community fundraising appeal – every penny does help (see p73).

We’re gearing up for exciting times at Brighton Dome & Brighton Festival - we hope you’ll join us on the journey ahead.

Music & Arts

Brighton & Hove Music & Arts Could your child be a musician of the future?

Brighton Dome & Brighton Festival united with Brighton & Hove Music & Arts (BHMA) in 2017 to create a city-wide hub for cultural learning.

Learning to sing or play a musical instrument provides children and young people with a highly positive and inspiring passion that will remain with them for life. In addition, research shows there are numerous benefits to learning music, such as developing team-working skills, meeting new people, and increasing confidence, self-esteem and general well-being, whilst enhancing musical progress. Get Into Music

BHMA’s Get into Music programme inspires young people to learn to play a musical instrument. Each year approximately 3000 children and young people attend music lessons in their schools, and we currently offer tuition on over 20 different musical instruments, including the full range of brass, woodwind and string instruments as well as guitar, keyboard, vocals, drum kit and percussion.

Dance

Dance Consortium and Brighton Dome present

Dada Masilo Giselle ‘Exhilarating. Bold, brazen, unapologetic and absolutely enrapturing’ Dance Magazine South Africa’s award-winning choreographer, Dada Masilo, presents her fearless re-imagining of the iconic classic.

Opening in a lively South African village, Masilo’s Giselle tells the story of a trusting peasant girl who is thrust into a world of betrayal and shame when her lover rejects her. Spurned by her family and killed by heartbreak, Giselle returns from the grave as a supernatural being, bent on revenge. Performing in the title role, Masilo brings her stunning high-speed style to the stage, fusing ballet, contemporary and traditional Tswana dance. Powered by a hauntingly beautiful score by South African composer Philip Miller who combines classical strings with African percussion and voice, this is Giselle – reinvented for a new world.

Faso Danse Théâtre / Serge Aimé Coulibaly

Kalakuta Republik

A globalised Africa takes centre stage in this ‘thrillingly inventive act of choreographic rebellion’ (Le Monde) by Belgian-Burkinan choreographer Serge Aimé Coulibaly.

Inspired by Fela Kuti, the political activist and inventor of Afrobeat, Kalakuta Republik uses an infectious and fresh energy to question the impact that an artist can create in their society. Throughout the work, the body exists as a centre for resistance – whether this is through power, sexuality, violence or fear.

Examining authority and frustration through a ‘careening, veering, chaotic political awakening set to music’ (A Younger Theatre), this is dance which is equal parts brutal, bold, fierce and beautiful. ‘Impeccable… powerful… the event of the summer’ Telerama (France)
