DIVINE LITURGY OF ST. JOHN CHRYSOSTOMPOURING OF WINE AND WATER
Ipodiakonos Zoran j. Bobic
Pouring of wine and water: …either he or the deacon pours wine into chalice and adds a
little water; Water symbolizes baptism; Wine & Water = Mystical relationship of Christ with his
Church; Wine & Water = The union of the divine and human nature in
one Person, the incarnate Son of God; Symbolism or NOT? NOT = At the Last Supper Jesus consecrated wine mixed with
water; Palestinian Jews added water to their wine at all their meals; This was the usage of the early Church;
Pouring of wine and water: Justin, Irenaeus, Clement of Alexandria …they all talk
about this; All Eastern Liturgies tell of Christ mixing water with
wine; We cannot deviate from what was practice
established by Christ;
