Part E– Land use & Banks• Left (LB) & Right bank (RB); Facing downstream• % Bank Length = 100 on each bank• Bank; Water / land boundary at time of survey• Notes; seasonal availability / flow dependant /

permanent

E1 – Land use / buffer zones E2 – Predominant bank vegetation E3 – Riparian trees / forestry E4 – Livestock access E5 - Bank condition

Page 2: Part E– Land use & Banks. Part E1 – Land Use Buffer zone

Part E1 – Land Use‘CIRCLE’ Predominant land use; within 10-20 m from

bank-top (or defined buffer zone) ‘UNDERLINE’ Predominant land use; More than 20 m

from bank-top (or defined buffer zone)AR - Arable; BL – Broadleaf / mixed woodland; CP – Conifer plantation; IG – improved grazing; MH – Moorland heath; RP - Rough pasture; TH – Tall herbs

Page 3: Part E– Land use & Banks. Part E1 – Land Use Buffer zone

Part E2 – Bank vegetation structure

Structural complexity ; number of different canopy layers (e.g. short grass vs. long grass/nettles vs. shrubs vs. taller trees).

• None; < 10 % vegetation. > 90 % bare ground / rock or concrete

• Uniform; 1 veg. Type (no trees)• Simple; 2-3 veg. Types (no trees)• Complex; 4+ Veg. Types (inc. trees)

Buffer zone

Page 4: Part E– Land use & Banks. Part E1 – Land Use Buffer zone

Part E3 – Riparian trees Trees; Along the bankface and/or the bank topCanopy shade; % of wetted cannel area with dappled or full

shade. Type; • BL – broadleaf• NCO – native conifer• COP – conifer plantation• MIX – mixed broadleaf and conifer

Forest & Water Guidelines; • < 1m wide streams; >5 m from bank• 1 -2 m wide streams; > 10 m from bank• > 2 m wide streams; > 20 m from bank

Buffer zone

Part B – Canopy cover• % shading of wetted

area at low flow• 90%+ = tunnelling B

Canopy cover: Percentage of survey stretch wetted area covered by tree and shrubcanopies. In the example given above:

Canopy cover (%) = ((A + B + C) / [Total area between top & bottom of stretch]) * 100

When leaves are not present on trees and shrubs (spring and autumn surveys),determine canopy cover by taking an outline around overhanging tree branches (D).

Overhanging boughs: Percentage of survey stretch bank length with overhangingtree and shrub branches. In the example given above:

Left bank (%) = (C'' / Bank length between top & bottom of stretch) * 100Right bank (%) = ((A' + B' + C') / Bank length between top & bottom of stretch)) * 100

When leaves are not present on trees and shrubs (spring and autumn surveys),determine overhanging boughs & canopy cover based on outline around overhangingtree branches (D & D').

Part E4 – Livestock accesswithin riparian buffer zone• None; No access to livestock - Bank not grazed• Limited; some light grazing, deer browsing• Present; primarily short grass, some impact on

shrubs and trees• Extensive; primarily grazed to roots of grass,

extensive impact on shrubs and trees• Notes; Deer / sheep / cattle etc. Fence

Part F – Fish coverCover; Physical cover for juvenile fish; draped on the

water surface or in the water. % of bank length

• UC – Undercut banks. (Probe under banks)• DR – Draped vegetation rooted on bank• MA – Marginal plants in stream bed (Emergent))• RT – Roots of trees exposed in flow (live or dead)• RK – Rocks that form part of the bank (not substrate)• OTH – Other features (define in notes)• NONE – No cover or for fish cannot reach cover due to

lack of water

Part E – Fish cover score

• 0 No suitable cover• 1 < 10 % of bank length• 2 11-33 % of bank length• 3 34-66 % of bank length• 4 67-90 % of bank length• 5 91-100 % of bank length
