Situated at Southbank inthe heart of Melbourne's cosmopolitan arts andrecreation precinct, it is close to the city centre,public transport and an exciting range ofgalleries and cafes.

LEARN TO MAKE PHOTOGRAPHSNOT JUST TAKE PHOTOGRAPHSPSC has an impressive reputation built over 38years of leading involvement in photographiceducation. Our unique Advanced Diploma ofPhotography course has been developed andrefined in close consultation with thephotography industry and educators to ensurethat the latest trends in contemporaryphotographic practice and technology are fullyintegrated from commencement. This innovativeand varied program is built on a uniquecombination of creative visual practice, currentdigital technologies and photographic technique.

As a first year student you’ll be encouraged todevelop your vision, your way of seeing andcommunicating; while doing this you will also be

challenged and inspired to generate and refine theconcepts and ideas that underpin yourphotographs, through continual folio production.At PSC your folio work is integral to yourdevelopment as a photographer, it provides ameans to access the world of the professional, todevelop a way of seeing and communicating thatsets you apart from the amateur; it is through thisprocess that you will learn to make photographsand not just take photographs.

Throughout this program, you will be required toimmerse yourself in an understanding of what theapplication of photography in the digital eraimplies; from an emphasis on capture andworkflow through to the digital aesthetic. Theseare aspects PSC recognises as essential to acontemporary educational program.

Whatever your reason for studying photography atPSC and regardless of your previous experience,we know you will be impressed at how rapidly thecourse expands your world of image making.Perhaps you enjoy travel photography and wantbetter results, perhaps you want a career changeor perhaps you just have a passion forphotography. PSC’s specialised facilities include awell equipped digital imaging centre incorporatingtwo large digital labs and a large multi-purposestudio area. These are integral to the professionalfocus of this unique learning environment.

Imagination Creativity Innovation

A UNIQUE PHOTOGRAPHICEXPERIENCE The Advanced Diploma of Photography course(21766VIC) with major specialisation studies incommercial photography, photojournalism or artphotography is exclusive to PSC. It is nationallyaccredited and recognised by the AustralianInstitute of Professional Photography (AIPP). PSCalso has its own unique credit transfer arrangementwith RMIT University.

The part time program is delivered in four distinctstages (years), each of which offer a uniquecombination of units and modules. In the first yearPSC’s semester or year enrolment options offers achoice for everyone – whether you want to learnphotography for one semester or intend to graduatewith the Advanced Diploma of Photographyqualification* at the conclusion of the minimum four year program.* In order to be eligible for the Advanced Diploma of Photography(21766VIC) qualification students must successfully complete and passall modules and units in each year level, all specialisation modules in thefinal year and any electives as delivered by PSC. This brochure outlinesthe core modules and units that must be successfully completed for thefirst year. Please refer to the Student Handbook for policies & regulations.

WORKING WITH LIGHT ONLOCATION – PHOTOJOURNALISMAND THE PHOTO ESSAYWeekend field workshop On location

You will be given the opportunityto complete a series of shortassignment briefs, including peopleand landscape photographs at arange of interesting locations. Thisis a practical program withlectures, discussions andtroubleshooting.

APPLY BASIC DESIGN THEORYTO IMAGE MAKING 8 sessions (3 hrs)

In order to communicateeffectively the photographer needsto learn how to design and frametheir photographs. This unitintroduces basic design principlessuch as composition, framing,form, shape, dimension andperspective in practical, hands onclasses.

WORKING WITHIN A DIGITAL IMAGING ENVIRONMENT4 sessions (3hrs)

You will be introduced to uploadingyour files, the skills of workflow andfile management in the PSC Macenvironment.

At the end of this semester, youwill have compiled an extensivefolio of images across a range ofgenres. This folio will havechallenged you to workintuitively and creatively whiledeveloping your visual literacyand underpinning technique.

PROCESS DIGITAL IMAGES10 sessions (3 hrs)

These sessions will be conductedin the digital centre – you will beintroduced to Adobe software forphotographers – and cover areassuch as data management,workflow, image editing andprinting.

WORKING WITH LIGHTING &PHOTOGRAPHIC TECHNIQUEWeekend workshop Location and studioYou will undertake a concentratedprogram, exploring in a practicalhands on way, various light sourcesand lighting techniques. This is anintensive weekend program bothon location and in the studio thatinvolves lectures, demonstrations,practical exercises and imageproduction.

At the culmination of this semester, and your first year, you will havecompiled and produced a second folio. You will have built your creativevision, been immersed in image production and digital capture and beready for the next stage in your photographic development.

VISUAL & CONCEPTUALDEVELOPMENT: BUILDINGCREATIVITY & PHOTOGRAPHICPRACTICE20 sessions (3 hrs)

In this weekly session, you willactively explore the creative processwhile integrating aspects oftechnical, theoretical and conceptualphotography in the production of abody of folio work. You will continuebuilding camera control andphotographic techniques whileimmersing yourself in digitalcapture. The group’s photographswill be regularly viewed anddiscussed in weekly group feedbacksessions.

CREATIVE 35MM DSLRPHOTOGRAPHY: EXPLOREPHOTOGRAPHIC GENRES 20 sessions (3 hrs)

These units are a combination ofpractical, theoretical and technicalaspects. Building each week on yourknowledge and practice you will beguided and encouraged to producecreative, imaginative and intuitivephotographs. You will explore arange of genres and styles in theproduction of your photographicfolio. The group’s photographs willbe regularly viewed and discussed inweekly group feedback sessions.

The first stage of thecourse emphasises thecreative process,together with anexploration of visualawareness andtechnique; engaging with both screen andprint, the program laysthe foundation for yourdevelopment as aprofessionalphotographer. It is an exciting andinspirational year where you will have the opportunity tocontinually ‘makeimages’ using your 35mm DSLR camera asyour intuitive andcreative tool. You willbe introduced to digitalcapture, visuallanguage and creativity,practical photographictechnique and theaesthetics of colourphotography; through tothe use of light, andaspects of design.

This first semester concentrates ondeveloping a strong visual awareness– often referred to as a person’s‘visual literacy’. It is here that thefoundation of your creativedevelopment is laid and you startbuilding your photographicvocabulary. It is an inspirationalsemester, where you will have theopportunity to photograph intuitivelywithout preconceived notions;challenging and expanding yourphotography by learning to see andexplore visual problems in new ways.You will continually create, view anddiscuss photographs while youprogress through visual awareness,camera operations and RAWprocessing, digital workflow,composition, light and design.

Building on the first semester youwill be challenged and guided toexplore the strategies to unleashyour own creative process in the‘making’ of photographs. You willactively challenge the meaning ofgenre photography and through yourweekly sessions be encouraged andinspired to generate and refine theconcepts, ideas and narrative thatunderpin your photographs. You willcontinue building on your control andphotographic technique, giving agreater emphasis to the explorationand perception of light.
