Introduction

IntroductionThe University of Cambridge Institute of Continuing Education (ICE) is a gateway to flexible and meaningful university-level education for all adults wishing to learn for personal, social, societal or professional motivations. ICE supports the University’s aim to prioritise and enable learning throughout life and to promote the widest possible access for learners to the University.

Whether you are taking your first steps in higher education or seeking to undertake postgraduate-level study, ICE aspires to form welcoming and supportive communities of learning where approachable expert teachers and adult students work together as peers to achieve personal and collective educational goals. Our discussions extend beyond the classroom over tea breaks, garden strolls, informal lunches in Madingley Hall’s dining room and globally across our virtual learning environment. ICE is a place where professional networks are formed, friendships made and learning cherished.

ICE’s portfolio of over 50 award-bearing courses divide broadly into two areas. Our professional development courses cover applied fields ranging from coaching to international relations. Our liberal arts offering explores academic disciplines as distinct as art history and genetics. Many subject areas offer both introductory-level courses and advanced postgraduate study options. Our aim is to provide pathways so you can study at your ideal level and pace.

We draw on the expertise and resources of the collegiate University and our wider networks in order to deliver field-leading continuing education. ICE promotes evidence-based exploration, critical enquiry and free speech in welcoming and respectful classrooms. All of

our award-bearing courses lead to a recognised University of Cambridge qualification. A selection of our courses are open access, not requiring prior entry qualifications. The credit system used by ICE aligns to the national Credit Accumulation and Transfer Scheme (CATS).

We anticipate that over 1,000 adults (approximately 20% of our total student body) will enrol on ICE award-bearing courses in the next academic year, with cohort sizes typically ranging from 10 – 50 students, with an average cohort of around 17 students. Our diverse student base is drawn from regional, national and international audiences, which strongly enriches the peer dialogue and overall learning experience.

A wide range of tuition fee bursaries are available for students who have not engaged with higher education previously and those drawn from disadvantaged and underrepresented groups.

Every student at ICE will have their own story, their own motivations to study. Introverts and extroverts, scientists and artists, young and old, alumni of world universities and graduates from the University of Life – all are welcome at ICE and all enrich one another’s learning experience. Together we will develop academically and personally.

My colleagues and I look forward to meeting you, learning alongside you – and from you – as we explore new thinking, knowledge and skills together as part of Cambridge’s unique life-wide learning community.

Dr James Gazzard Director of Continuing Education University of Cambridge Institute of Continuing Education

Being part of a community of intellectually-curious adults from all walks of life means there is no shortage of people willing to share new ideas and opinions. Discussion and debate bring the subjects to life, conventional wisdom is challenged and fresh possibilities explored. Peer learning is key and inquiry and interaction are encouraged.

Our aim is to make the learning environment a welcoming, supportive and rewarding one for all, regardless of educational background. You might be exploring a new discipline for the first time, finding your way back into education, or taking an in-depth dive into a subject you’ve been passionate about for a long time. Alternatively, you might be a professional looking to progress or change your career path.

Whatever your motivation for study, all are welcome and bring together a fascinating mix of ideas and experience.

We want to ensure that the opinions and feedback of adult learners at ICE are heard and we use the comments provided to meaningfully improve our taught course offering and overall student experience. From the 2020-21 academic year we will be inviting ICE student representatives to join a wide range of committees as student representatives.

Gain a University of Cambridge qualificationAll of our award-bearing courses lead to a University of Cambridge qualification, accredited under the nationally recognised Credit Accumulation and Transfer Scheme (CATS).

Our Master of Studies (MSt) degrees are fully matriculated, meaning you join a College and become a Cambridge alumni after graduating. ICE is one of the few places at the University where you can study for a Master’s degree on a part-time basis.

Awards ceremonyFor students who successfully complete a non-matriculated ICE course, an annual awards ceremony is held at Madingley Hall. The ceremony is an excellent opportunity to recognise and acknowledge significant academic achievement as well as celebrate student success. Please note that the ICE awards ceremony is free of charge for students (and up to two invited guests per student) who complete an eligible ICE course.

I am hoping when I complete my Creative Writing Diploma to apply to more writing courses, as everything and everyone I have met during my time at Madingley have been so valuable. I come from Kansas but chose to study at ICE because Cambridge is the best academic institution in the whole world. I am an Executive Director of a not-for-profit organisation and a youth and collegiate Pastor at a church in Dallas, Texas. In my work, I see a lot of injustice and inequality. Thanks to my history course, I can put that inequality into some form of context. David, History student

When I retired, I was determined to keep seeking out serious intellectual stimulation and show my six grandchildren that although my hair may be grey, my mind is just as capable as it always was. Fees and fundingYou may be able to apply for a student loan from Student Finance England. Many of our part-time courses are eligible for both a tuition fee and maintenance loan. In most cases, to be eligible for a loan you must not have previously taken out a loan for study at an equivalent or lower level than the course upon which you plan to enrol.

As loans can take some time to process, please apply as soon as you can.

Many courses offer you the option of paying for your fee in several interest free installments, as an alternative to paying in full when you enrol.

Additional costsAdditional costs are the mandatory or optional expenses you may need to pay during your studies. These may include, for example, the costs for study materials, equipment or field trips. Anticipated additional costs will be highlighted on the course page. Tuition fees do not cover the costs of purchasing books or stationery, printing or photocopying costs.

Please see www.ice.cam.ac.uk/funding for more information.

BursariesWe aim to promote the widest possible access for learners to the University of Cambridge. However, we know that for many prospective students, paying for the costs of studying at university can be challenging. We are particularly keen to provide financial support for students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, underrepresented groups in university-led higher education and people who have not previously studied at university-level.

To this end, we have a range of different bursary schemes on offer to help remove or reduce this potential barrier to learning with us, including the ICE First Time in Higher Education, the Workers’ Educational Association and the Cambridge United Community Trust bursaries. Please see www.ice.cam.ac.uk/bursaries for more information and our full range of bursaries. Please note that bursaries are competitive and it is usually the case that there are more eligible applications for funding than there are bursaries available.

Entry requirementsMost Undergraduate Certificate courses have no formal entry requirements, whilst higher-level courses (Undergraduate Diplomas and upwards) typically require some relevant knowledge and experience. Please be aware that all ICE courses are taught at university level. Students from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland will require an appropriate visa to attend a course at ICE.
