Participatory approach - Why

• Immigrant families ”hard to reach”

• ”The voices of the immigrant families’ are not heard, still less taken into account, when designing policies or interventions.”

• Counselling interventions should be designed and carried out with the active participation of the immigrant families they are supposed to benefit

Page 10: Participatory Multicultural Social Counselling (2009-2011) OSMOS -project funded by ESF Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences -Project organisations

The aim•Support to immigrant families’ everyday life and wellbeing

•New methods and ways of working for social counselling

•New Concepts and service design

The Questions

• What are appropriate social counselling designs and methods for reaching the ‘hard to reach’ and how can they be implemented?

• How can service users and communities be involved in the design and implementation of OSMOS project?

• How can counsellors become reflexively aware of their own cultural background and do justice to the heterogeneity of migrant groups while avoiding generalisations?

• How can collaboration be built up between service users, communities, social workers, teachers, researchers and policy makers, in order to increase the effectiveness service interventions?

• A service needs survey and critical cases (Mervi)• Community-based pilot- interventions aiming to open up
