Many Mexican villagers still use bonfires that are hazardous to their health to heat their homes and cook; Efficient Stoves are usually not adopted long term.

We use Participatory Action Research to understand the role stoves play in indigenous villages, and designed novel efficient stoves that would be adopted long term.

Participatory Stove Design

• Stoves are built using local material: clay and sand.• The stoves’ pieces are not heavy to facilitate having women

fix the stove. • We use the villagers’ traditional collective work to have

the villagers build the stoves and distribute them through • out the region.

RESULTS

•After 5 years our participatory stoves are the most accepted by Mexico’s rural communities.

•Participatory stoves have replaced bonfires by almost 80%.•by incorporating the villagers' traditions the lifetime of our stoves has surpassed all previous implementations.
