Letter from the President

Dear Cornerstone Families and Friends,

As I write this message, along with every school in Pennsylvania and most schools around the country, the COVID-19 virus has closed the doors of Cornerstone Christian Academy. While it brought a sudden halt to the daily in-school instruction for our students, we are not letting COVID-19 quarantine our mission to educate children. School is still in session! Although no one is physically at 1939 S. 58th Street, nor do we know when we might return, our students, teachers, and staff are actively engaged in daily remote learning.

Anticipating the possibility of school closure, we began preparing students and teachers for remote learning ahead of time. On the school’s first day of closure, Monday, March 16th, we were prepared to launch online instruction for our students. Every day since then, teachers and administrators are engaged with students; posting assignments, holding virtual class meetings, and scheduling remote office hours to speak with parents or students. And, yes, every Wednesday morning at 9:00 a.m., the school community gathers remotely for chapel.

The biblical phrase, “for such a time as this” (Esther 4:14), resonates with me right now. Setting aside the context of these words that were spoken to Queen Esther centuries ago, I find myself reflecting on how Cornerstone’s partners helped us prepare for such a time as this. We began getting ready seven years ago when our Board of Trustees boldly adopted a rigorous and costly school improvement plan that called for:

• The addition of essential academic personnel

• Improved professional development for our faculty

• Funding for technology resources and training

• The building of reserve funds for emergency purposes

The prayers and generosity of our faithful partners enabled us to fulfill the goals of our plan that now have us in the position we are today to continue our educational program for students, even in a time like this. Thanks to you we have the staffing, training, and resources necessary to serve our students effectively and meaningfully while the school is closed.

We know this time is going to pass. God’s goodness and grace always reign supreme. In the meantime, I want you to know that our students, teachers, and staff are praying for the entire Cornerstone community. We are asking God to bless you and keep you and your families healthy, safe, and strong. We are thanking God for your past support that helped provide the resources we have available today to keep our students engaged in learning. And, we are also praying that you will stay by our students’ side in the weeks and months ahead, supporting them with your prayers and your continued generous contributions.

Gratefully,

Dick Ollinger, President/CEO [email protected] | (215) 724-6858 x232

I thank God every time I remember you, constantly praying with joy for all of you, because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now.

CORNERSTONE REPORTSCornerstone and Jefferson University Hospital Team Up

Thank you to the Thomas Jefferson University Hospital (TJUH) for a generous contribution of $100,000, given in honor of Ken and Andrea Frazier who recently received the hospital’s Award of Merit for their transformational contributions to healthcare, education, leadership, and philanthropy. The TJUH gift will be used to help Cornerstone continue to foster a school culture of acceptance, respect, and safety by promoting the physical, social, emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being of our students.

TJUH is also inviting several of our 7th and 8th grade students to apply for acceptance to their Saturday Academy program. Saturday Academy is a program in which underrepresented youth participate in educational experiences for nine Saturdays during the academic year.

The overarching themes of Saturday Academy are to:

• Provide supplemental enrichment opportunities in STEM subjects

• Engage students in hands-on learning activities that are fun, including laboratory skills development

• Encourage students to take a team-based approach while participating in the discovery process

• Serve as preparation for future education opportunities by introducing students to STEM professions.

We are grateful for and excited about this new partnership with TJUH.

Cornerstone administrators, teachers, staff, and trustees completed and submitted in early February an in-depth written self-study for reaccreditation with the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) and Middle States Association Commission on Elementary and Secondary Schools (MSA-CESS). A four-member Visiting Team from ACSI/MSA-CESS was scheduled to be on campus in early April to evaluate Cornerstone’s candidacy for reaccreditation. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 school closure, the visit is delayed until next school year.

Accreditation is a seal of quality awarded to an educational institution. It verifies that the school is continually striving for excellence; not that it is perfect, but that it is committed to ongoing improvement and growth. To that end, the culminating work of Cornerstone’s self-study was the completion of a Continuous School Improvement Plan (CSIP).

The CSIP now serves as the school’s strategic “road map” for the next 5 years (2020 to 2025), focusing on four priority areas:

Strengthening the Student Educational Experience

Fortifying Stakeholder Engagement

Improving Educational Spaces and Resources

Embracing Organizational Order and Unity

The full CSIP, including specific goals and actions to be completed in these priority areas, can be viewed on the school’s website at CornerstonePhiladelphia.com.

Self-Study for Reaccreditation Completed

3rd Grade Teacher, Gayle Gaskin

“It’s interesting how God will bring you back around.” Gayle Gaskin did not start the 2020 school year as Cornerstone’s full-time third grade teacher. In fact, she began her career spending many successful years as a Marketing and Communications professional before following the call to re-enter the world of education—which she first explored in college.

When Cornerstone’s long-time third grade teacher, Mrs. Jones had to take an extended medical absence at the start of this school year, Mrs. Gaskin stepped in as a substitute. In the following weeks and months she took that role for the entire year, an opportunity she relished.

What makes Ms. Gaskin such a good fit for Cornerstone is that in her words, “My personal philosophy dovetails with Cornerstone’s.” Specifically, the dedication to teaching students how to behave in a Christ-like manner is something that comes naturally for Gayle’s teaching style. “I’m the queen of the teachable moment. I’m a character person, we want [our students] to be amazing people in character in addition to academics.”

And that commitment is apparent upon meeting any one of the students Gayle has taught this year. Thank you for doing such a great job Ms. Gaskin!

STAFF SPOTLIGHT

Ms. Gaskin is a beacon of light! She desires to see her students thrive spiritually, socially, emotionally, and academically.

Warriors Return: Season in Review

Welcome back Warriors! After a multi-year hiatus, Cornerstone’s basketball team (previously known as the Cougars, now known as the Warriors) came out roaring in their first season back in the PCAC League. With a .750 winning percentage, our boys and girls were the only first-year team in the league to qualify for the playoffs.

Head coach David Ford attributes this immediate success to his players’ ability to come together as a team in a comparatively short amount of time: “Watching these kids learn to be unselfish and focus on working together has been the key to our season.”

Growth on the court isn’t the only place he sees his Warriors thriving, Coach Ford sees this experience as having a wider-reaching impact, “We focus on the idea that you are a student-athlete—with a focus on the student part. To see them translate their focus and effort from basketball to academics is the main thing I’m proud of.”

The team success is in no small part due to the amazing support from parents and fans. The crowds are fired up every game and packed with parents cheering loudly at home and away games. The future looks bright for Cornerstone basketball!

Remote Learning Daily Schedule

We are trying to help our students and parents stay organized during this extended time of remote learning by encouraging them to follow a daily schedule that balances their academic and personal lives; reminding them to stay focused on their mental, physical, and spiritual health.

Here’s a sample of the schedule we designed for our middle school students:

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

Amanda Antonacci & Operation Cornerstone Christmas

This past holiday season Cornerstone was been blessed with a very special event—known to the Kindergarteners and 1st graders who attend it—as Operation Cornerstone Christmas.

Five years ago, Bucks County student Amanda Antonacci organized this program with a team of like-minded friends. Taking matters into their own hands, Amanda’s group connected with Cornerstone and self-organized this amazing day.

This past year, Operation Cornerstone Christmas returned. Calling it “a birthday party for Jesus”, volunteers comprised of local college students—some who flew in from as far away as Florida—came to Cornerstone’s

campus and provided nearly an entire day of holiday-themed activities: arts and crafts, story time, lunch, a “birthday” cake for Jesus, and to top it off, each child went home with their own Christmas gift (as Amanda is quick to add: “something educational, of course!”)

Antonucci organizes similar programs while attending Palm Beach State in Florida, but says “[Cornerstone] has the best reaction and the most grateful hearts.” She is very exciting to be able to fly home and do it again next Christmas, and we hope to host her and her amazing group year after year.

Why give to Cornerstone?

As an independent private Christian school, Cornerstone depends upon the financial contributions of individuals, churches, corporations, and foundations to provide scholarship and program support for our students.

Every dollar donated ensures that our students receive a quality education that truly transforms their life.

Your generous gifts make a difference for the students and the families who choose our school for their child’s education. Nearly 25% of our donor base has been contributing financial support to Cornerstone since 1990. Thank you to these faithful donors as well as all of our donors who help us inspire hope in the children we serve.

Investing in Cornerstone’s students pays high dividends. In a city where approximately 67% of public high school students graduate from high school in four years, 98% of our alumni graduate high school on time. Our students are prepared to excel in high school and college because they are equipped with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed, as well as being grounded in faith and shaped with Christ-like character.

Our donors are the difference makers for the students we serve. We could not provide the quality education we do without the financial support of many friends. Your gifts help change the destinies of our children by making a Cornerstone Christian education accessible. Thank you!

Volunteer OpportunitiesLast year, over 110 individuals provided 1,389 hours of volunteer service at Cornerstone in the areas of student support, facilities improvements, classroom activities, and office support. Volunteers are vital to Cornerstone by the support they provide for school operations without financial cost.

Consider becoming a volunteer by serving in one or more of these ways:

Mentor - build a relationship with a middle school student by helping them set and achieve personal and academic goals, including preparing for high school.

Classroom Assistant – support teachers by assisting with classroom activities and lessons.

Maintenance – help keep our buildings and grounds safe, clean, and in good repair.

Office Support – assist with mailings, materials preparation, and other light office duties.

Committees – serve on a board committee Advancement, Education, Facilities, or Finance)

Tutoring – provide reading and/or math support to students.

There are year-round volunteer opportunities at Cornerstone. For more information please contact Maria Arrington by email at [email protected] or by phone at 215-724-6858, ext.233.

Financial DonationsYour generous financial donations are essential to help maintain and advance the high-quality education and services Cornerstone provides to students. There are number of ways gifts can be made to the school:

How Can We Help?

Thank you to many partners who are asking how you can help our students, families, teachers, and staff during this difficult time. We are grateful that you are keeping us in your thoughts and prayers. Honestly, that is the best way you can help us right now; praying daily for our teachers and students as they participate in a whole new way of teaching and learning. We are staying in close contact with our families, keeping them informed of city service providers to ensure they have access to food and supplies, as well as remote learning resources, including technology devices for remote learning.

We know this is an unsettling time for everyone and that many requests for charitable contributions are being solicited. If you are not aware, the “CARES Act” approved by Congress provides some important incentives for donors, including these key provisions:

Universal Charitable Contribution Deductions This allows all individuals to take a tax deduction of up to $300 —whether or not you take the standard deduction or itemize your deductions—everyone can benefit from charitable contributions in 2020.

Ability to Donate 100% of Adjusted Gross Income The former limit of 60% adjusted gross income on gifts of cash to charities and private operating foundations that applied to individuals is now lifted.

Higher Cap on Corporate Giving Corporations are now able to give up to 25% of their adjusted income, rather than 10%.

We hope you will continue to support our students, not only with your thoughts and prayers, but as you are also able with financial contributions.
