On the cover: Groundbreaking research funded by donors to the Abbott Northwestern Hospital Foundation is helping interventional neuroradiologist Yasha Kayan, MD, identify which patients may be at risk of stroke in the days and weeks following a ruptured brain aneurysm.

Dollars raised through philanthropy go beyond serving today’s patients. Donors help Abbott Northwestern Hospital invest in the future, fuel innovation and explore new approaches. The Abbott Northwestern Hospital Foundation brings together donors – who share our passion for finding new and better ways to deliver care and serve our community – with exceptional physicians, nurses, leaders and others.

This extraordinary partnership has helped to create and sustain the culture of innovation for which Abbott Northwestern is known.

ALLINA HEALTH MISSION

We serve our communities by providing exceptional care as we prevent illness, restore health and provide comfort to all who entrust us with their care.

At Abbott Northwestern, innovation offers patients and families a margin of excellence that sets the hospital apart. It’s become part of the culture, with care providers and researchers throughout the hospital engaged in continually improving and advancing care. Your partnership is crucial to making sure that they have every opportunity to explore and innovate.

In the following pages, I am excited to share with you some of the ways philanthropy has helped shape the future of health care at Abbott Northwestern Hospital, and how donors like you have made a lasting impact in all aspects of care and treatment.

• With your help, we continued to invest in nurses, who are critical to excellent care at the hospital. The Abbott Northwestern Hospital Foundation granted $268,000 for continuing and professional education for nurses in 2015. More than 300 nurses received certification, attended educational conferences, and received scholarships and awards.

• Thanks to our Plus One giving program, Medical Staff had the opportunity to help patients in need and fund community initiatives. Abbott Northwestern has wonderfully engaged physicians who support a wide variety of programs inside and outside of the hospital.

• We were delighted to announce a $2 million gift from the Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation to renovate and expand the existing neuro intensive care center. This will allow for a 30 percent increase in patient volume, and will better prepare the hospital to serve the increasing number of patients needing complex, critical neurological care.

Donors know that Abbott Northwestern is a local resource with a world-class reputation. Thanks to you, the hospital is leading the way in innovative, life-saving care and treatment. On behalf of the patients and families we serve, the Abbott Northwestern Hospital Foundation Board of Directors, the Medical Staff and hospital leadership, thank you.

I hope you enjoy reading our annual report.

Because of you, 2015 was a year I’ll never forget. From funding ground-breaking research on breast cancer care and the use of integrative therapies in the Emergency Department, to easing barriers to care at our community clinics, your support was invaluable. Thank you.

“Philanthropy can allow us to offer novel treatment approaches to our patients, even if there is not initially a financial advantage to doing so. We’ve found that if you do what’s right for the patient, generally the finances will follow.”

Abbott Northwestern Hospital Foundation 3

Abbott Northwestern has become synonymous with clinical innovation and advances. It is known for conducting research, launching programs and improving processes that set the standard for outstanding care and service, and then sharing this knowledge and expertise with others. Here is a sampling of ways that charitable gifts help the hospital do just that.

How philanthropy fuels innovation at Abbott Northwestern

Defining how to treat a less common form of breast cancer

The Engelsma Family Foundation funded a Virginia Piper Cancer Institute study on invasive lobular carcinoma which found that most patients could be treated with anti-estrogen therapy alone and not with chemotherapy. The researchers defined a model that, if validated, could help in making treatment decisions for patients with this less common form of breast cancer, and could also save patients time, money and side effects.

Improving the physical exam with ultrasound

Routine use of point-of-care ultrasound, performed by internists at the three Abbott Northwestern General Medicine Associates (ANGMA) clinics, has become essential in ensuring the highest quality of care for patients. Part of the hospital’s Internal Medicine Residency Program, these unique clinics are national leaders in using internal medicine point-of-care ultrasound. Support from the Abbott Northwestern Hospital Foundation helped launch the Internal Medicine Bedside Ultrasound Program in 2011, a nationally recognized program that trains internal medicine residents in using ultrasound as part of the physical exam. This support continued in 2015 with funding to expand ultrasound capabilities at the new Abbott Northwestern - WestHealth ANGMA clinic and add ultrasound capability to SimMan in Abbott Northwestern’s Center for Clinical Simulation.

Creating new methods to improve cancer diagnosis

Allina Health Laboratory and Hospital Pathology Associates have developed ways to use data and statistics to improve the diagnostic algorithm for pituitary adenomas, a form of cancer. This helps pathologists determine and verify a diagnosis using fewer tests, saving time and reducing costs. The methods are also applicable to other diseases that lack the characteristics that allow pathologists to classify them reliably and consistently.

Enhancing end-of-life care

With support from the Robina Foundation, Abbott Northwestern is piloting a new model of care for patients dealing with serious illness later in life. Called LifeCourse, the model assembles existing supportive care services as a unified program, eliminating gaps and fragmentation in care. Once implemented, the model will help deliver compassionate, comprehensive and reliable late life supportive care that honors patients’ and families’ wishes and goals, improves their care experience, controls costs of care, and increases access to best practice end-of-life care.

Preparing nurses for next generation health care

Abbott Northwestern Hospital Foundation has launched a multi-million dollar effort to educate, recruit and retain nurses. Patients referred to Abbott Northwestern are increasingly those with the most complex conditions who are critically ill. This requires a highly educated and versatile core nursing staff. At the same time, many of the most experienced nurses are nearing retirement. The Nursing Excellence Initiative will support specialized training, certifications, evidence-based practice experiences, conferences, research fellowships and baccalaureate or higher degree completion.

Preventing aneurysm-related strokes

Many people who suffer a ruptured cerebral aneurysm are at risk for a fatal or debilitating stroke. A first of its kind study by interventional neuroradiologists at Abbott Northwestern is using advanced MRI techniques to detect which patients with ruptured brain aneurysms will have complicating strokes in the days or weeks after the rupture. Doctors can then plan appropriate treatments to prevent strokes in those at risk.

Using acupuncture in the ED

An observational study on the use of acupuncture in Abbott Northwestern’s Emergency Department (ED) showed that it can significantly reduce a patient’s pain and anxiety. The next step is an Abbott Northwestern Hospital Foundation-funded randomized trial of acupuncture versus standard care, including pain medications. This could lead to federal funding for a definitive study, as well as help ED providers improve patient outcomes, decrease the need for opioids and potentially reduce costs.

Sharing clinical knowledge

Sharing clinical knowledge is central to the hospital’s role as a regional health care resource. The 2015 Innovation Summit, sponsored by Abbott Northwestern Hospital Foundation, included an evening of networking and a full day of fast-paced sessions that highlighted care innovations at Abbott Northwestern in diverse areas like cardiovascular care, perinatal psychiatry, critical care, neuroscience and oncology. Activities like these help build stronger partnerships that ultimately benefit patients.

2015 HIGHLIGHTS

Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation supports neuro ICC expansion with $2 million gift

RICHARD M. SCHULZE

Abbott Northwestern receives more referrals of patients with neurological disorders and performs more brain and spine surgeries than any other hospital in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area.

A $2 million gift from the Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation to Abbott Northwestern Hospital’s Critical Care Campaign will support the expansion of the hospital’s neurological intensive care center. The expanded unit will be named the Richard M. Schulze Neurological Intensive Care Center when it opens in 2017.

“The volume of patients needing treatment for neurological disorders – an area of care that has special significance for my family – is on the rise,” said Richard M. Schulze, founder and chairman of the Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation and founder and chairman emeritus of Best Buy Co., Inc.

“Abbott Northwestern has demonstrated its commitment to pioneering, high-quality care,” he added.

“Our Foundation is delighted to support the essential work of the Neurological Intensive Care Center and help broaden the impact it can have on the lives of patients and their families.”

6 Report to donors 2015

A ceremonial “wall breaking” in August marked the beginning of a $28 million renovation of Abbott Northwestern’s Emergency Department (ED).

Abbott Northwestern Hospital Foundation donors and hospital and community leaders celebrated the occasion and also recognized the Rod and Barbara Burwell family, whose $3 million gift helped launch the project. The new ED will be named the Rod and Barbara Burwell Emergency Department.

The family’s gift was inspired by the excellent care that Rod received at Abbott Northwestern before he died in 2015.

Work on the new ED is occurring in phases, and the entire project will be completed in 2017. The renovation will expand bed space while streamlining access and triage for critically ill patients, ensuring more rapid care for patients with less serious conditions, enhancing care for patients with mental health conditions, and improving the overall experience for patients and families.

2015 HIGHLIGHTS

Emergency Department renovation underway

Piper Breast Center®: Celebrating a milestoneIn 1995, a multi-disciplinary group of physicians met with patients who had breast cancer and asked, “How can we deliver better treatment and better care?” The answer was simple: collaborate.

Together, they formulated a new care model – one that centered on the needs of the patient and that tapped into the collective knowledge of the entire care team. With financial backing from the family of Harry and Virginia Piper along with other generous donors, Piper Breast Center and a multidisciplinary approach to treating breast cancer was launched.

Twenty years later, that care model has been replicated in breast centers across the country, and in all of the disease-specific programs of the Virginia Piper Cancer Institute®.

“These roots remain strong in our approach to breast care – caring for patients with a customized treatment plan and basing treatment on the latest evidence-based

research,” said Lisa Schneider, MD, co-medical director and chief of Breast Imaging for Piper Breast Center, and radiologist with Consulting Radiologists, Ltd.

For the descendants of Harry and Virginia Piper, the 20th anniversary of Piper Breast Center was also a special milestone. Virginia Piper was the inspiration for the Virginia Piper Cancer Institute®, which was founded at Abbott Northwestern in her memory by Harry. “It’s been incredible to see my grandfather’s vision for the Virginia Piper Cancer Institute become reality,” said Gretchen Piper, Harry and Virginia’s granddaughter.

She knows that her grandparents would be extremely proud of how Piper Breast Center has laid the foundation for comprehensive, holistic cancer care.

“It’s great to be able to reassure someone about the standard of care at Piper Breast Center and to always feel confident in recommending it,” she said.

President’s Circle PartyDonors who contribute $5,000 or more annually are recognized as members of the Foundation’s President’s Circle. Each year, these champions of Abbott Northwestern Hospital are invited to a special gathering with hospital leaders. In 2015, Abbott Northwestern Hospital Foundation board member Ann Bentdahl, her husband Roger Smith and President’s Circle members Mumtaz Kazim, MD, and Hossein Aliabadi, MD, hosted a memorable event.

Honoring retired nursesIn August, the Abbott Northwestern Hospital Foundation welcomed retired nurses for a special gathering. They returned to the hospital campus to reunite with past colleagues, share stories (and quite a few laughs!) and learn about current nursing initiatives and hospital projects. Abbott Northwestern’s retired nurses are an important part of the hospital’s history as well as its future.
