Liverpool Hope International TennisTournament 2002-2015

The Liverpool Hope International Tennis Tournament (LITT) was established in 2002 as a warm up event for Wimbledon to give top ATP and WTA players as much grass court practice as possible prior to the most important tennis tournament in the world. The event organisers Northern Vision has since 2002 gathered an incredible list of the world’s best players competing in Liverpool such as Novak Djorkovic, David Ferrer, Mardy Fish, Marat Safin, Caroline Wozniacki, Laura Robson and Viktoria Azarenka to mention a few.

The Tournament added on legends to its program in 2004 and has since hosted the three most famous tennis players of the Open era, Bjorn Borg, John McEnroe and Martina Navratilova,as well as Martina Hingis, Virgina Wade , Ilie Nastase, Michael Stich, Richard Krajicek, former British Number One and US Open Finalist, Greg Rusedski and the Iranian tennis trickster with the unmistakable ‘tash’, Mansour Bahrami.

Northern Vision carries out lot of work at grass route level and runs one of the most extensive CSR programs for tennis in the UK. During the kids day only in 2014 our program set an incredible world record in the largest tennis lesson ever staged were 680 kids from schools around Liverpool participated.

We have introduced over 60,000 children to tennis through our School Programme during the Liverpool International. Moving forward we will work closely with Liverpool City Council to guide as many of the children who attend the programme in the park into public tennis clubs in Liverpool.

In addition to our CSR program Liverpool International has projects involving students, local businesses and charities, making it a very community oriented event . Our partnership with the title sponsor Liverpool Hope University, has added extra value to the tournament in terms of the promotion of Education, Sport, Health and Business Networking.

Our relationship with Liverpool City Council is invaluable, but for this event to be sustainable due to the austerity faced by the public sector it is important for the private sector to embrace our initiative for sport and bringing world class tennis to the North West. This is a sponsorship proposal for Liverpool Hope International Tennis Tournament 17th to 21st of June 2015. The event takes place in the Liverpool Cricket Club, showcasing tennis to the general public, corporate clients, sponsors, in addition to introducing 5000 children to tennis annually.

The Festival of Tennis is scheduled to run from 1st to the 15th June 2015 .

“It was a fantastic day and all the children were great,” said Cowan. “It is not easy to conduct such a large session and to organise it has added to the challenge, but I am so proud that I have been able to set a World Record in my home city, at my home tournament and that so many local young people have been able to share in that.”

Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson led the plaudits following the announcement the record would stand.

“Congratulations to everyone who took part in this record-breaking tennis coaching lesson,” he said. “They should rightly be proud of themselves for making history. One of the great aspects of the Liverpool International Tennis Tournament is the way in which it is inspiring the next generation of tennis players and encouraging young people to take up the sport.”

Ian McKenna, Director of Development at Liverpool Hope University said: “Breaking a world record is a fantastic achievement, and I am sure that sense of accomplishment will stay with all of the young people involved for a long time. I hope that their experience as record breakers will help them develop a lifelong love of sport as fun, as part of a healthy lifestyle or even a career.”

Liverpool Hope University International Tennis Tournament’s Anders Borg said that he was immensely proud to bring the record to the city.

“We have been running the tournament in Liverpool since 2002,” he said. “Throughout that time we have worked hard to introduce young people to the sport as an alternative to football.

“To have so many schools get involved with this effort and succeed in bringing the record to the city of Liverpool is a fantastic achievement and every pupil who took part should be proud that they have made history.

“Hopefully this will inspire them to go out to tennis clubs, playing fields and open spaces all over the city playing tennis and who knows, the next big British talent may well be right here in Liverpool.”

The third ITF Nike Junior International Event will be organised by Northern Vision at Wavertree Tennis Centre as part of our all year long Community Programme. We aim to bring talented national and international youngsters not only promote Liverpool as a city of tennis but to also bring local kids to see and compete (through wildcards) against international junior players of their age. Wavertree is a fantastic venue for tennis and it is our aim and hopes to use it for several other events throughout the year. Additionally, the event is part of our initiative the Liverpool Tennis Foundation, set up by Northern Vision and supported by LTA and Liverpool City Council to make an active difference to the lives of thousands of young people throughout Liverpool – developing transferable life skills of self esteem, respect for others , the ability to work in a team in addition to fight obesity and crime.

Liverpool Hope University International Tennis Tournament smashes World RecordLiverpool has officially smashed the world record for the largest ever tennis lesson according to the Guinness Book of Records – beating the marker set by Andy Murray’s mum Judy in March

The Liverpool Hope University International Tennis Tournament organisers invited local schools to take part in the record attempt on June 18, the day before the tournament, which featured former Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli, began.

Guided by coaches, including Merseyside’s own Wimbledon legend Barry Cowan, 680 children took part in the session. It meant Liverpool comfortably beat Murray’s Guinness World Record of 406 children taking part in a lesson at Flushing Meadows in the US.

The record has now been independently verified by Guinness World Records and although it was hard work, Cowan said the verification of the record made it all worthwhile.

A dazzlingly talented 15-year-old from Denmark called Caroline Wozniacki was the star attraction, even stealing the limelight from Belgian powerhouse Xavier Malisse who won the men’s event. A junior match between children in three age groups from Liverpool and Oslo also attracted a lot of attention, the Liverpudlians winning 31-21 and a rising star called Chloe Murphy winning all her five singles and doubles matches.

2007:

The tournament displayed its resilience in 2007 when it had to face some of the worst problems incurred during its six-year existence, but still managed to attract the biggest number of spectators (some 17,000)

Promoter Anders Borg lost his star attraction Bjorn Borg only a few days before the event began, but managed to find a first class deputy in former Wimbledon champion Richard Krajicek, who put on a magnificent display in beating Pat Cash. Greg Rusedski was another casualty, having to pull out with a shoulder injury, and local hero Ken Skupski put up a wonderful fight against the men’s ultimate winner David Ferrer, before losing by three points in the final set.

Quite apart from all this, the weather was dreadful for much of the time, with one day washed out completely

and another drastically reduced, but somehow the tournament kept on rising to the occasion and providing bags of outstanding entertainment.

There were no tantrums – just dazzling exhibitions of tennis.

2008:

The event was now firmly established in the public consciousness –and wider afield on the worldwide tennis circuit – as underlined by the nations represented in the finals.

Dane Caroline Wozniacki returned for a third successive year – and became ladies champion for the second time beating an American in the final – while USA’s Amer Delic won the men’s crown in a thrilling final against a Chilean.

Afterwards Wozniacki declared: “I’d love to come back again. It’s been a different experience for me in each of the three years I’ve played here But the tournament is definitely better now.”

2009:

Portuguese teenager Michelle Larcher de Brito and experienced American Mardy Fish were crowned the Tradition ICAP Liverpool International Champions. In the men’s final Fish beat Vince Spadea in straight sets 6-4, 6-2, to leave his 34-year-old opponent wondering if he will ever get his hands on the coveted Boodles’ Trophy.

Spadea was competing in his third Liverpool final, but his compatriot Fish proved too strong.

Then after making headlines for the power of her tonsils all week, Michelle Larcher de Brito showed that the strength of her tennis was even stronger as she overcame Britain’s Laura Robson in another superbly contested ladies final. After the serious business was completed,

2002:

The Liverpool International was launched with a fanfare of publicity in 2002 – and the presence of the then world number one and former US Open champion, Marat Safin. Local sports fans loved the idea and flocked to Calderstones Park… but unfortunately the LTA proved less enthusiastic!

2003:

If the tennis authorities didn’t exactly drive the fledgling tournament underground, they certainly forced it indoors. Under legislation by the Association of Tennis Professionals Tour, no top-50 player is allowed to appear within 100 miles of an official tournament.

And because the LTA were running a tournament in Nottingham – and the ATP ruled that Nottingham was 93-miles away from Liverpool as the crow flies (the shortest route by road is 106 miles!) – the tournament organisers were forced to schedule a mini-tournament inside at the Wavertree Tennis Centre. Ironically, outside the skies were cloudless. No Pimms, no strawberries and cream, notented village or hospitality marquee – but there was still a

tournament. And it waswon by the previous year’s losing finalist.

Winner: Jan-Michael Gambill bt Alex Kim 6-4 6-2.

2004:

Back in the sunshine at Calderstones Park, the Liverpool International was starting to find its feet. Established ATP stars like Ivan Ljubicic, Vince Spadea, Robert Kendrick and Irakli Labadze featured – as did a series of legends for the first time.

Former Wimbledon winner Richard Krajieck was joined by the irrepressible Nastase and Bahrami, together with Peter McNamara and Guillermo Villas.A splendid tournament ended with Mansour Bahrami circling the court on his bicycle!

Winner: Ivan Ljubicic bt Irakli Labadze 6-2 6-7 6-4.

2005:

The growing Liverpool International featured lots of extras in 2005. Not least was the tournament’s uncanny ability to spot rising stars before they had hit the big time.

On this occasion an 18-year-old Serbianwith dazzling ground strokes called Novak Djokovic made the tennis public sit up and take notice.In addition to the 2004 champion

Ivan Ljubicic, the legends returned to entrance us once again, and there were added bonuses in the form of women’s legend Martina Navratilova and former Wimbledon champion Pat Cash.

The tournament also supported two charities - The Marina Daglish

BreastCancer Fund and the Dan Maskell Tennis Trust – raising the grand sum of £12,000 for the charities over the five days.

2010:

The truly international flavour of the Liverpool International was highlighted once again last year as Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu became the 2010 men’s champion beating Chilean Nicolas Massu 6-3 6-2 in the final, while Canada’s

16-year-old starlet Eugenie Bouchard was crowned women’s champion after a 6-3 6-3 success over Norwegian Ulrikke Eikeri.

But all eyes were on the legends circuit, with arguably one of the most charismatic names ever to grace Calderstones Park featuring for the first time – three times Wimbledon champion John McEnroe, who dazzled centre court for three days with his tennis and American charm!

There were no tantrums – just dazzling exhibitions of tennis.

2011:

THE man nicknamed Hands of Stone (Fernando Gonzalez) because of the ferocity of his forehand-pounded Portugal’s Frederico Gil into submission in the tournament final to lift the silver trophy at the first attempt. Martina Navratilova, Martina Hingis and Virginia Wade attended the event to celebrate its 10th anniversary.

Miss Wade commented: “The city is beautiful. The architecture is amazing – the old architecture and the new architecture – and I’m really, really delighted to have reason to come here.”

Hingis was the victor during the four days winning all of her matches.Wimbledon Champion, Richard Krajicek reigned supreme over the Legends event with three straight wins over Greg Rusedski, Jan-Michael Gambil and Barry Cowan.

2012:

The Schools Day event saw around 2,000 local school children bussed into the park to take part in training sessions with professional tennis coaches.

2014:

Michael russell strikes blow for thirty-something generation at the liverpool International 36-year-old American joins David Ferrer, Marat Safin and Xavier Malisse on the list of winners .The women’s title, however, was lifted by a schoolgirl more than 20 years younger – 15-year-old Surrey protege Jodie Burrage.

Both finals were watched by near full houses in fine weather as the 13th International tournament made a successful transition to its new venue of liverpool cricket club.

At 36, one of the oldest playerson the circuit, russell defeated 16-year-old russian Andrey Rublev – the current French Open junior champion -In a keenly contested match the final took almost two hours to decide.

Russell became the oldest winner of the event - while in the previous day’s Women’s final 15-year-old Jodie Burrage struck a blow for youth. The Surrey schoolgirl added her name alongside tennis legends Martina hingis, caroline Wozniacki and last year’s champion Coco Vandeweghe with a 6-4 7-5 victory over British number five Tara Moore.

Belinda Bencic worked hard to secure her first senior title in Great Britain at the age of 15. Greg Rusedski triumped for the first time in legends singles in Calderstones Park.

2013:

For the first time ever at a grass court tennis event, two Argentinians made the final in front of a great crowd in calderstones park.the final was won by Martin Alund beating fellow countryman Guido pella 7-6 6-3.the finalists were made up of the round robin winners, coco vandeweghe (uSA) and Alexandra cadantu (roM). Alexandra has been struggling with fever all tournament but put up a great fight against vandeweghe who eventually won 6-2, 6-2.

the Skupski Brothers were introduced as a duo, beating in doubles the Argentinian pair pella/ Alund.

Russell claimed the first set 6-4 before rublev bounced back in the second set, taking russell to a tie-break and winning 7-5.

A tie-break set was required to decide the destiny of the trophy and it was russell who came out on top.

Afterwards he tipped his young russian opponent for future success on the Atp circuit.

“He has a massive forehand,” said Russell. “He is definitely a star for the future.
