We are a professional research organization

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft is anapplied research organization, workingfor clients in industry, commerce andpublic administration.

Our business is built on innovation. Our objective is to transform scientificresearch into innovative products andapplications.

We supply what industry needs:Innovations

Innovation is one of the primary successfactors in commerce and industry. To thrivein today’s competitive global marketrequires familiarity with the needs of thecustomer, in-depth knowledge of thelatest technology, and an ability to respondrapidly to changing market developments.

Aware of this fact, successful companiesinvest in professional teams of innova-tors: creative thinkers, experienced devel-opment engineers, in-house researchdepartments.

To maximize their opportunities, com-panies can also make use of outsideresources: Engaging the expert skills andexperience of the Fraunhofer Institutesrepresents a cost-effective supplementaryor alternative solution, which can helpcompanies to advance their innovationprocesses.

Who are we?

We work on a global scale

Globalization affects the entire economy – including the market forresearch and development services. Aninternational presence is synonymouswith the ability to compete, establishfruitful contacts and actively follow (or even initiate) technological trends.

For this reason, and for many yearsnow, the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft hasbeen setting up affiliated research centers and representative offices inthe chief economic regions of theworld: in Europe, the USA and Asia.

Employees of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft

We are dedicated to progress: Thehistory of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft was found-ed in Munich in 1949, starting out in avery small way under difficult economicconditions. Its initial vocation was toraise funds for industrial research. In1952, it still only had three employees.

But the demand for research servicesgrew rapidly in those early years of eco-nomic recovery – to the benefit of thebudding Fraunhofer organization. Thefirst Fraunhofer Institutes were foundedsoon thereafter.

Today, the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaftemploys a staff of around 12,700, operates over 80 research facilities inGermany and manages a total budgetin excess of one billion euros. TheFraunhofer-Gesellschaft is now the largest applied research organization in Europe.

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft takes its name from Joseph von Fraunhofer(1787–1826), the illustrious Munichscientist, inventor and entrepreneur.

Microsystems: Micro-engineered componentswith standard interfacesare a cost-effectivemeans of incorporatingnew features in electri-cal appliances.

Polymer engineering:Tomorrow’s displayswill be made of organic light-emittingdiodes (OLEDs).

Through us you can also make use ofthe services of accredited testing laboratories and confirm compliancewith mandatory standards.

If necessary, our specialists will work incooperation with internal and externalresearch partners.

An excellent workforce

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft offers afertile environment for career develop-ment. Anyone who works for us is onthe right track to success. A uniqueblend of fascinating research topicsand direct application provides experi-ence with a distinct practical bias thatis highly motivating: The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft is consistently rated one of the most popular employers amongindustry-oriented organizations.

Our customers not only enjoy the ben-efit of dealing with skilled professionals, but also highly motivated partners.

Specialist expertise

We offer contract research services and innovation support in practically all application-oriented disciplines, including:– production engineering and

manufacturing technology– materials– microelectronics and micro-

engineering– information and communication

technology– process engineering– environmental and power

engineering– biomedical research and medical

engineering– structural engineering– market studies, technology

assessment

We will be glad to provide any furtherinformation you might need – feel freeto call us any time.

What do we offer?

Fixed-duration partnerships

Research is an important factor in busi-ness success, but it also costs money.Every company has an interest in organizing its pursuit of innovation asefficiently as possible.

Contract research can provide an afford-able solution: Engaged as partners forthe duration of a specific project, theFraunhofer Institutes work to profes-sional standards and within a definedschedule. The costs are comparably lowand easily calculated in advance.

Our customers are satisfied customers:The majority of cooperative projectswith our institutes are based on follow-on contracts.

Services on demand

We develop, implement and optimizeprocesses, products and systemsthrough to technical and commercialmaturity.

We help our customers to reorganizetheir operations and implement newtechnologies by– conducting trials in demonstration

centers equipped with ultra-moderntest facilities

– training the customer’s staff on site– providing ongoing services following

the introduction of a new process or project.

In advance of work on collaborativeresearch projects, we provide advice inthe form of– feasibility studies– market surveys– trend analyses– profitability analyses– information on funding oppor-

tunities, especially for small andmedium-sized enterprises.

Photonics: Light as the universalworkhorse – Fraunhoferresearch has helped Germany to establish aleading role in this areaof technology.
