NOUNS• Nouns carry important information in a sentence and

complete sentences require a noun.

COMMON NOUNS1) General name for a person, place, thing, or idea.2) not capitalized

PROPER NOUNS1) name of particular person, place, thing, or idea2) always capitalized

COLLECTIVE NOUNS1) words that name a group of people of things2) names specific groups

1) POSSESSIVE NOUNS1) form of a noun shows ownership of relationship2) add apostrophe

COMPOUND NOUNS1) made of two or more words together as a single noun2) may be single, two or more separate words, or hyphenated

VERBSVerbs show what the noun/subject is doing.

TO BE VERBSVerbs that don’t show that much action.EX. Am, is, are, was, were, been, being, has been, had been,

will be.

ADJECTIVESAn adjective describes or modifies a noun. It answers one of

the following questions: What kind? How many? Or which one?

ARTICLESArticles indicate/warn that a noun is coming. The three articles

are: a, an, the.

ADVERBSAdverbs answer one of the following questions: How? When? Or

to what extent?

PREPOSITIONSPrepositions show the relationship of one thing to another.

CONJUNCTIONSA conjunction is a rod/nail/peg used to join words or groups of

words.

PRONOUNA pronoun is a word that is used in place of a common or

proper noun.
