Party Instructions

“I can’t wait to ...” is Girl Scouts’ new recruitment campaign theme and it’s all about helping girls

discover a world of possibilities! One way to do that is to have a superhero party to kick off the new

Girl Scout year. This will get girls excited about returning to Girl Scouts and can also be used at a

recruitment event (an alternative to a typical bring-a-friend event) or as a way to celebrate Juliette

Low’s birthday (October 31). When girls find out that it’s going to be a party, and not just any party,

an “I can’t wait to…be a superhero with the powers I choose” party, they will be anticipating and

counting the moments!

Activities can be found in this document to use with girls at the party or recruitment event such as

making a fortune teller, finger puppets and a kaleidoscope. The decorations, party food, superhero

activities and overall party theme will ensure the girls have a great time. Don’t forget to have the

camera ready to snap some pictures for The Golden Link! Here are ideas for how to throw a great

superhero party that all Girl Scouts and their friends will marvel at!

Invitations: Have troops send out superhero invitations to girls to let them know the details of the

party (date, time, location, etc.) The girls could make them with construction paper, using the

superhero emblem and personalize the invitations with their own message. Or you may simply use the

invitation included in this packet. Girls could distribute them at their school, faith based institution or

other appropriate venue. Invitations could also be emailed. Materials needed: multi-colored

construction paper, superhero emblem to trace, scissors, ink pin or sharpie.

Decorations: Hang up a sign at the entrance that says “Welcome to Girl Scout City,

_______________(community name), where you can be a be a superhero with powers you choose!”

You can also hang up signs or posters with pictures of fun activities girls can’t wait to do in Girl

Scouts such as camping, swimming, art design, selling cookies, archery, etc. Make posters with the

title I can’t wait to….and let girl decorate it with things they can’t wait to do in Girl Scouts as they are

arriving. Additional decorations could be streamers and balloons in superhero colors (red and blue like

Super Woman, Wonder Woman.) You might also consider posters of women/girls who have achieved

great things as real life superheroes. Other superhero party decorations could include action signs like

“Girl Power!,” “Girls Rule!” and “Kapow!” You can be as fun and creative with your superhero party

decorations as you want. Materials needed: Wide roll of white paper to make a large welcome sign,

streamers, balloons, poster board, magazines for pictures or print from computer, colorful markers and

construction paper to make signs.

Food/Beverages: Mix up some superhero punch with fruit punch,

pineapple juice and Sprite. You can decide on your choice of food,

and it would be great to have cupcakes that girls can customize with

the superhero “power” they choose. Table tents would be nice to

indicate each superhero food.

Activity #1 - Face painting: Paint your party guest faces to make them look like superheroes! Use the

superhero emblem and inside paint the name of what the girl would like to be (i.e. doctor, teacher,

lawyer) Materials needed: Face paint, small brushes, small cup, water

Activity #2 - Superhero Transformation: Another great super hero

party idea is to have a variety of plastic table cloths at the party for the

kids to make their own cape and transform themselves into

superheroes! Also, you can get fabric to make capes, felt to make belts

and a mask. Look on the GSSJC Pinterest page

(www.pinterest.com/gssjc) for superhero party ideas.

Materials needed: Several colors of rectangular plastic table covers,

scissors, alternative – fabric and felt to make a belt and mask

Activity #3 - Superhero hangers: Using the superhero emblem, cut

out shapes on construction paper for each girl. Have girls think of a

superhero power that they can use to make a difference in the world. Have them write inside the

emblem ways that they can impact the world now and how they see themselves impacting the world in

the future. They can also share things that they can’t wait to do in Girl Scouts. For example “I can’t

wait to be the one that makes everybody giggle,” “…be the star of my own story,” “…be an explorer

on a real-life adventure,” “…turn new friends into BFF’s!” Once this is complete, hang them around

the room or tape on a poster board. If they’re on a poster board, you can bring it to troop meetings so

girls can be reminded that their super powers will make the world a better place!

Materials needed: construction paper, scissors, markers, poster board (optional), hole punch and

ribbon to hang them

Activity #4 – Superhero word game: Ask each girl to write down someone they know who is a

superhero and the super powers they have which are making a difference. The girls can also do the “I

can’t wait to” fortune teller activity where they can write in eight imaginary fortunes for them and their

friends.

Materials needed: Pencil, paper, copy of “I can’t wait to” – fortune teller activity.

Activity #5 – Finger puppets and Character Cards: For Brownies, have them make the “I can’t wait

to” finger puppets. There are four different puppets and the girls can use their imagination and act out

the superhero powers that each puppet has.

Materials needed: Scissors, double-sided tape, finger puppet print out for as many girls that

participate.

For Juniors, they can use the “I can’t wait to” character cards. Here the girls will play different roles in

life. Some roles might include friend, sister, Girl Scout, student and teammate. Or pick roles they

might be when they are older: astronaut, firefighter, president, etc. Try out these roles (and more) by

using the character cards.

And now let the FUN begin!

Invitations have been sent out, EXCITEMENT is in the air, decorations are in place and you are

thinking “I can’t wait to…” welcome all the SUPERHEROS and have the opportunity to help them

discover a world of possibilities! At the same time, the girls are thinking “I can’t wait to…” be a Girl

Scout, where I can turn new friends into BFF’s!

Character Cards

Accepting CircleStart by asking everyone in the group to make a circle. Pick someone to go first. That player should make a sound, a gesture, or strike a pose. The second player has to copy it exactly. The third player must copy the sounds and gestures of the players before her. Go around the circle a few times and switch your starting point!

Guess My RoleYou can play alone or with a group. One player should go at a time. Choose any role you can think of (doctor, teacher, police officer). Describe where you go, what you do, what you wear, who you help, and other important things about that role.

We all play different roles in life. Some roles you might play now include friend, sister, Girl Scout, student, and teammate. As you get older, you’ll take on new ones. Do you want to be an astronaut? How about a firefighter? Try out these roles (and more) by using our character cards and the fun activities below!

For More FunAct out your role without speaking, like you’re playing charades!

For More FunPlay with a friend or two! You can each choose a character and improvise scenes together.

Character CardsHere’s how to use your own character cards. You’ll need scissors, double-sided tape or glue—and plenty of imagination!

1 Cut off the white edges and discard them in your paper recycle bin. Then flip the sheet over and cut apart the nine cards, following the orange and purple grid.

2 Fill out the backs of the cards to create your own

unique characters. Be sure to use your

imagination and consider all kinds of

people and possible backgrounds. Remember, roles

in life should be limitless!

3 Now deal yourself a card and improvise a monologue (a longer speech by one person). It can be funny, serious, or anywhere in between. Make sure you describe who your character is—from what she does to what she’s like.
