We studied Indian policies,in courses taught by cabinet ministers, includingPrime Minister Nehru, during the first half of our studies.During the second half, we were guests of theMaharajah of Mysore and studied Indian architectureand art.
“We were overwhelmed by the hospitality ofthe Indian people as well as the history and physicalbeauty, but couldn’t overlook the abject poverty wesaw everywhere. As a result, 12 of the 19 Fulbrightscholars changed jobs that year.”
Gloria joined the Peace Corps and trainedcollege graduates assigned to Latin America. ThePeace Corps administrator urged her to pursue a
doctorate. She applied to the history program at theUniversity of Southern California and was granted afull-tuition Oakley Fellowship. Her dissertationbecame her first publication: Le Memorie diGregorio Mengarini (a Jesuit missionary andethnographer). It is now a collector’s item. It headsa long list of books written, edited or co-authored byGloria.

Gloria came to Pasadena Highlands aboutsix weeks ago. “I’m very impressed with the facilityand the responsiveness of the staff, who seem eagerto please. Most of all, I’ve been made to feel wel -come by the residents.” We are happy this friendly, outgoing woman with her zest for life chose to live asa member of our Highlands family, and we look for-ward to having her join some of our groups once shehas completely settled into her new home.
