Voice… “Voice” is a characteristic of verbs which

indicates the relation of the verb’s action to its subject i.e indicate whether the subject of the verb performs or receives the action.

There are two types of voice: active voice and passive voice.

Use… We use the Passive Voice when the doer

is understood or not important. Example:

People speak English English is spoken all over the world.

They sell cars in that shop Cars are sold in that shop.

They built a house A house was built.

Page 8: Passive Voice

We can use thr active and the passive to keep the staring point of two clauses the same, even when the doer changes.

Examples: She opened the door and (she) shouted

to a friend. The staring point stays the same. Both

clauses are active because ‘she’ is the doer in both clauses.

Page 9: Passive Voice

She opened the door and (she) was seen by one of her neighbours.

The staring point stays the same, but the second clause is passive because ‘she’ is not the doer.
