In addition to having fun, the purpose of this assignment is to help you get inside the mindset of Renaissance times, which stand as the backdrop to Romeo and Juliet. You will invent or choose and then become a Renaissance character. Your character will keep a diary of the events that happen in his/her life as well as in the kingdom (more on that later). Your character will also write letters and interact with other characters in the kingdom. Our freshmen class will become the kingdom of Ytic Glen, Brick Toweshire and/or Lihawking Rock. Assume these kingdoms are somewhere in the United Kingdom, and it is the year 1560. That should help narrow your focus (and research).

The Basics : Conventions of the Role Play The kingdom—and even the royalty—is ultimately under the rule of Goddess Bee. The kingdom will have a king and a queen chosen by Goddess Bee. The King and Queen cannot be deposed. No character can kill, maim or imprison another character without specific reason and advance permission from Goddess Bee. Goddess Bee will deliver all personal letters and will keep the sender’s identity secret as needed. She will also, however, censor any unkind or inappropriate letters.

Fun Tip #2: Form Connections As we share our letters in classes or between classes, try to integrate the story ideas that interest you from others’ journals into your own journal. Form families of characters, create public or secret relationships and craft alliances or pacts appropriate to your character. In previous years, this has been quite fun! We’ve had authentic Renaissance weddings, plagues, quack cures, secret affairs, hidden royalty…the only limit is your imagination and research!

Fun Tip #1: Characters You might be a pauper or a nobleman, a thief or an executioner. You might choose a lowly monk or a goofy jester, a drunk playwright or a serving-wench. You could become Roger the Shrubber, Juliet’s lady-in-waiting, Isabeau long-separated from her lover—or the evil Bishop of Aquila that keeps her that way.

Role Play Part II

Example

Letters • May not be on lined paper

• Must be addressed with the name of

the addressee (character and kingdom name)

• Must be labeled clearly “Private” or

“Public”

Elizabeth of Dira Ytic Glen

Private

Writing a letter Elizabethans usually started their letters with a greeting that expressed the position of the writer in relationship to the position of the person to whom they were writing as well as a blessing of some kind:

To my beloved sister, my kindest wishes for a full recovery from your recent illness… To my honored Lord and Reigning Duke, most respectful greetings… To my faithful servant, thankful that you are able in body and mind…

And they usually ended their letters with some reference to the content of the letter as well as the date and place of writing:

Therefore I beseech you to remember Jane in your prayers and I commit us all to God’s protection until you see your loving daughter, Elizabeth Shropshire, 2 January, 1596

Journal Specifics

Your renaissance character will keep a diary or journal during the unit. In the journal, you will keep track of the happenings in your Kingdom and the events in your character's life. In addition to this creative work, your character diary is also your opportunity to USE and APPLY the research you have done in creating your character. An example of a journal entry is on the next page. Therefore, once you have completed your "character," you need to purchase or make a journal and begin your writing. We will have limited in-class time for journaling, so a big responsibility weighs on your shoulders outside of class.

Fun Tip #3: Authenticity & Creativity Make your letters and journals authentic. Try calligraphy or illuminated letters, burn the edges of the paper for the “old” look. Stain paper with tea to make it look like parchment. Use sealing wax and imprinting stamps. Send scrolls.

One year, a student wrote each journal entry on the leaf of a cloth plant. He then brought in the whole plant—pot and all—to hand in as his “journal.” Another year, a student sealed each entry individually and put it in its own bottle—she handed in a basket full of bottles. A court herald might write all his journal entries on a flag, whereas a peasant…you get the idea.

Journal Requirements Your journal should include all or nearly all of the following information—these topics will look familiar from your research notes!

• Description of yourself, your home, your family, your environment, including your dwelling place

• An explanation of how or why you are keeping this journal, particularly if you are “supposed” to be illiterate

• Your daily activities (work, home life, leisure) • Your religious practice and habits • A description of weddings, births, deaths, illnesses, and other

events in the kingdom--and how those events impact you • A description of the events in your own life • A description of festivities, holidays, etc. • A description of the food you eat and how you eat it. • A description of the clothes you wear and how you wear them • Monarchs, Nobility and Gentry only: Your genealogy/family tree

& background and your coat of arms, with all the significant components, colors and shapes identified.

You may talk about topics more than once—if you’ve already talked about one holiday, maybe you talk about another—or if you talked about the food you ate on one night, talk about a different food you ate another night. You should also follow the rules of language that you wrote about in your research notes. Your journal should have one entry for each day of the role play, or 10 entries total.

What is it?

Each person is responsible for creating an artifact from Elizabethan life and times. These artifacts will be displayed during the Festival. Your artifact might be a thing you make—or it might be a live-action demonstration of some kind. WARNING: Creating an artifact may require additional research!

Fun Tip #4 The more energy you put into your artifact, the more fun our festival will be. In past years, people have made torture devices and model houses, grown “healing herb” gardens and sewn authentic dresses. Others have performed Shakespeare, demonstrated fencing, funerals, calligraphy, jousting, you name it! I have lots of samples/photos to show you to get you started.

Renaissance Artifact Project

Requirements • You must submit a project proposal one month in advance (attached to

this packet). That proposal is due April 28th. • You must create/practice your artifact outside of school hours. • Your artifact must be based on genuine research and understanding of the

time period and should replicate something authentic.

• If your artifact is A PRODUCT or FOOD, you must bring your artifact to my room on the morning of the Renaissance Festival.

• If your artifact is LIVE ACTION (performance/demonstration), you must

arrange your “time” with me in advance.

Artifact Ideas

Creative • Make something typical of the time period and sell it at market (ex: lace goods). • Make a costume for yourself. Mrs. B can help you find a good pattern locally. • Make a coat of arms for your character. • Create a book of remedies for different ailments. • Create a display of healing herbs and explain how they were used. • Create a replica of a Renaissance garden (either in small pots or in model form). • Learn a service from the Book of Common Prayer and stage it: funeral, baptism, wedding. • Create all the accoutrements a bride would have carried at her wedding and display them. • Make cardboard versions of farm implements. • Create a torture device. • Stage a beheading. • Learn a scene from a play of the time period and perform it with props and strong acting. • Build a castle from the era, a peasant home, a great home—any architectural design from this

era. • Create a memorial to all the people lost in your village and explain what illnesses took them. • Create the equipment a knight would have used and display/wear it at the festival. Practical • Learn and demonstrate fencing moves, using correct equipment and technique; give lessons to

people at the festival. Create a poster to help you demonstrate. • Learn and perform a piece of Renaissance music. • Make the equipment for a joust and host a demonstration. • Study calligraphy from the time and teach lessons to others. • Learn a Renaissance dance and teach others and then perform it for the audience at the festival.

Analytical • Research superstitions from the time and display your findings on a tri fold or in a pamphlet. • Research artists and artwork in Elizabethan England and display your findings on a tri fold or

in a pamphlet. • Research a daily life topic in more depth and create a tri fold or a pamphlet • Write an explication essay based on the speech you explicated for Romeo & Juliet. Mrs. B can

talk more with you about how to write an explication.

Renaissance, Romeo, & Juliet 2011 Calendar

The calendar is subject to change for particular days, but by and large we will follow this plan as if our lives depended on it. On the next page, I’ve provided a checklist—which may be preferable for some of you, based on how you tend to think about things. All the major due dates are on that checklist as well.

Renaissance Responsibility Checklist

Journal & Role Play I chose my character’s name and created an identity for my character based on

the status I got when I rolled the dice.

I have participated in the research sessions IN CLASS April 6-15.

I have completed my character research sheet due April 15.

I have taken notes on the events in my kingdom each day of the role play (see calendar).

I have written ten journal entries. Each of them incorporates my character’s life and the research I did (see example in Renaissance Packet). We will work on this IN CLASS May 4, 5 and 6.

I have made my physical journal as creatively as possible (for ideas see Journal handout in Renaissance Packet).

I handed in my journal. DUE FRIDAY MAY 13.

Artifact

I chose an artifact that matches my learning style, and I got it approved by my parents. See the Artifact Idea Sheet in your Renaissance packet for ideas.

I have thought through and planned my artifact project, writing out my plans on my proposal. DUE THURSDAY APRIL 28

I spent time outside of class working on my artifact project.

Add a list of specific steps toward completing your artifact project here, if you like: o _________________________________________________ o _________________________________________________ o _________________________________________________ o _________________________________________________

I handed in my artifact project, based on authentic research by the day of the

festival, FRIDAY MAY 27.

Explication I have signed up for a monologue/speech, _________________.

I have followed the instructions on my explication assignment sheet completely. We will work on these in class April 19, 20 and 21. They are DUE APRIL 22.

I read aloud my monologue when we got to it in class, and I explained it to my classmates to help them understand it.

Because these are major, long-term projects, there is no flexibility on the due dates, and

no excuses will be accepted.

Do whatever you must do to be prepared to hand in your work on time.

Instructions The next section of this packet provides a template for research: questions and plenty of spaces for answers and source notes. Some questions instruct you to IMAGINE. This means you won’t find the answer in any book or website. Instead, you need to use the information you’ve found to imagine something specific for YOUR CHARACTER. Other questions are just that—questions. You need to figure out the answer to that question through careful research. Sometimes I’ve given you a hint about a good resource, but other times you’ll need to use the books, articles and websites I’ve provided to find what you need. Your answers may include pictures, illustrations and diagrams—but don’t have to, unless specifically requested in the instructions. Some people may want lots of illustrations because that’s how they learn. Others may not care too much either way. These notes will be your reference point for your journal. You want to be able to look up the information you need in your notes and UNDERSTAND it so that you can put it to use in your journal. DO NOT just copy down “answers” that have no meaning for you. Remember you’re answering these questions about your CHARACTER—not about yourself.

Research Reminders

1 . It pays to persevere & be creative . Let’s say you’re faced with this question:

Based on your status, what happens when a woman in your family is pregnant? In other words, where does she give birth? Who assists her? How often do babies survive their first year? How often do women survive childbirth? Again, based on status, who breastfeeds the child? How long?

What do you look up? How do you find the answer? Well, I might start by looking up “babies.” Nothing. Should I go to my teacher and say, “There’s nothing about this question in the books!” No. I persevere. I get creative. I try “pregnancy.” Nope. And I try “birth,” but nothing. Then I try “childbirth.” Aha! There are some results. Also, I notice as I’m reading about childbirth that they talk about “midwives” and “wet nurses.” I decide to look up those words, and I find even more information. I notice they keep talking about “infant mortality.” I’m not sure what that means, so I ask Mrs. B. She tells me that is the rate of how frequently infants died. That’s an answer to another part of the question, so I write it down.

2. It pays to know where to look. On the internet, you’re going to be using sites that I have pre-approved. You won’t be plugging randomly into Google and hoping to find a hit. But when it comes to books, you need some basic tools.

Page 12: Passport: English Renaissance · Passport: English Renaissance Name_____ IMMIGRATION Arrival 4 April 1560 . 2 In addition to having fun, the purpose of this assignment is to help

12

Table of Contents vs. Index A Table of Contents is in the front of a book. It tells you the big topic of an entire chapter. This is a table of contents from a book about Elizabethan England. Mostly, the table of contents tells you if it’s even worth looking in a particular resource.

Sometimes a Table of Contents will give sub-headings that can be even more helpful in figuring out what is in a particular book. This is another Table of Contents from another book about Elizabethan England.

Notice that if I’m still looking for the childbirth question, I would guess that it will be addressed in the book, since Chapter VI, is all about sex. But Chapter VI starts on page 161 and ends on page 188! I do not want to read 27 pages to find one answer!

Again, if I’m looking for the childbirth question, I can see that Chapter 10 is helpful—and I should turn to page 189, specifically for a section about Childbirth. But notice that the sections in this book average 6-10 pages long. That is still a LOT to read for just one question. PS) This is the TOC from Elizabeth’s London by Liza Picard. Notice that it’s a GREAT resource for our questions!

Page 13: Passport: English Renaissance · Passport: English Renaissance Name_____ IMMIGRATION Arrival 4 April 1560 . 2 In addition to having fun, the purpose of this assignment is to help

13

That’s when I would turn to the Index. An Index is in the back of a book. It tells me very specific topics from very specific pages.

3 . Understanding is more important than knowledge . It doesn’t really matter if you “found the answer.” Especially for this project. You need to understand it. If it doesn’t mean anything to you, if YOU can’t make sense of it, it’s a waste of time. Same thing goes for reading level. If a book is so wordy or complicated it’s impossible for you to read, then don’t use that resource! There are other tools available.

Here, notice that “babies” is a topic. If I’m still looking for how long infants typically lived, there is information on “babies, life expectancy,” on page 89. But if I’ve turned my attention to how babies are cared for, I might look on pages 182-184. I also notice that the first entry is “abortion.” I wonder if there might be some information about childbirth and pregnancy tied to that topic, too. That’s on page 170 and also on pages 180-181. None of these are more than a page or two, and that’s the perfect length for me to read!

Research Reminders Quick Review

1. It pays to persevere & be creative. 2. It pays to know where to look. 3. Understanding is more important than knowledge.
