2 HFS CHICAGO SCHOL ARS | 2019 ANNUAL REPORT

Dear Friends,

HFS CHICAGO SCHOLARS HELPS economically disadvantaged, academically motivated kids succeed in high school and beyond via our educational enrichment program of Academic Excellence, College Readiness and Lifeline Mentoring. Since our inception over 25 years ago, HFS Chicago Scholars has provided a passport to success for each of our scholars. Our scholars are capable and resilient and go the extra mile every day, taking the necessary steps to fulfill their dreams. Their path can be filled

with obstacles, and the road is not always smooth, but our scholars move forward with a determination that is astonishing.

Princeanna (featured on the back cover) strives for excellence while supporting her mother’s ongoing battle with cancer. Her mother’s strength and HFS are guides for her continued success. After achieving all A’s senior year, she is attending Pomona University this fall on a full-tuition scholarship.

Angelic, a first-generation college-bound scholar, studies hard, stays up late, and does not let anything diminish her confidence. Although her mother passed away at a young age, Angelic is determined to make a difference. With the support of HFS, she gained self-confidence to do well in school and is now a freshman at the University of Dayton. The HFS Family – our staff, mentors, alumni and board members – provides an extended family to support our scholars’ journey of excellence and their road to success. Our scholars not only make the grade, they are leaders in their schools and communities, providing service to those in need. There is no stopping them!

We thank you for your generous support. We will continue to provide opportunities to underserved scholars so that they may continue their journey to success, reach for the stars, and shine.

Sincerely,

ACADEMIC E XCELLENCE COLLEGE RE ADINESS LIFELONG MENTORING

HFS • ENDOWMENTTHE HFS CHICAGO SCHOLARS Board of Directors conducted a strategic visioning process in 2017-2018 designed to chart our future. The Board determined that the highest priority to ensure the long-term organizational strength was to further invest in our educational enrichment programs:

Academic Excellence • College Readiness • Lifelong Mentoring

To that end, we invested in our program resources, creating positions for a full-time Director of Operations and Director of College Advancement, launching our HFS Alumni Board, establishing uniquely branded academic programs with sponsors (such as the ComEd-HFS Create-A-Spark STEM program) and adding College Persistence and Alumni Connection as core focuses within our existing Lifelong Mentoring program.

We followed that investment by launching the Say Yes! campaign, our first-ever endowment campaign, at the end of 2018 to help ensure the long-term growth and financial stability of HFS Chicago Scholars. The goals of Say Yes! are to:

1. Ensure our financial stability and continued growth;

2. Build a $2,5000,000 endowment to safeguard the long-term stability of the program;

3. Create donor legacy programs to establish scholarships into perpetuity; and

4. Invest in additional scholars and continue to grow HFS.

We are grateful for the receptivity to the program thus far.

• Board member Jordan Curnes, who served as an HFS mentor and helped launch the HFS Young Professionals Board, observed, “I’ve seen the scholars I mentored transform from timid 8th graders into business professionals with jobs in private equity and consulting. HFS fundamentally changes the trajectory of the scholar’s lives. Dynamic programs deserve an endowment.”

• Board member Chris Cooley, who chairs the Say Yes! Campaign, notes that “Elizabeth and I interview prospective HFS scholars every year and are energized by the recipients but struck by how many amazingly qualified kids we just aren’t able to fund. We’re going to close that gap one scholar at a time.”

Please contact HFS Executive Director Desirée Pepper-Venzant at [email protected] if you would like to take part in this mission-driven opportunity to make a difference in the life of a high-achieving, academically motivated, economically disadvantaged Chicago high school student.

EVENTS & NEWS

T he ComEd - HFS Stem CREATE a Spark program launched this year to great success. This first-of-its-kind program is part of ComEd’s Community of the Future in Bronzeville, a collaborative effort of local residents and ComEd to use smart grid technologies to create a connected, green

and resilient community and enhance people’s everyday lives.

Throughout the 2018-2019 school year, HFS Chicago Scholars freshmen ventured to ComEd’s Chicago Training Center (and one memorable session at the Art Institute of Chicago) for Saturday sessions to learn about smart grid technology and how it can be used to increase the sustainable use of resources.

Our Scholars were instructed and mentored by ComEd and Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) scientists and engineers. The sessions culminated in an end of year competition between and among the students, who formed groups to propose innovative ideas that would help the community better sustain energy.

The HFS teams were led by Directors of Academics (and HFS alums) Lucia Botello and Wendy Perez with support from Director of Operations Jennett Wilson. Team BACK (Bryce Choice from De La Salle Institute, Austin Ayite and Chris Iwuoha from St. Patrick High School, and Kamron Brown from St. Joseph High School, supported by their ComEd mentor Hiva Nasiri) won first place for their Smart Pathway framework designed to save energy and make it safer for people to walk neighborhood streets at night. This “bright idea” earned Team BACK a $2,000 scholarship to use toward their high school tuition and the opportunity to share the HFS Chicago Scholars and ComEd Create a Spark programs with the entire Chicago community. These Scholars were featured on ABC 7 Chicago morning show. We are so grateful to ComEd President Terence Donnelly for his active leadership of the ComEd-HFS STEM program, and to (HFS Board member) Shay Bahramirad and Sandor Williams for creating the program and partnering with HFS Chicago Scholars! We look forward to doubling the program in the 2019-2020 school year, when our sophomores will continue the program and we will have a separate program for the new HFS freshmen!

HFS CHICAGO SCHOLARS PROVIDED ME WITH resources and lessons

necessary to succeed in life. HFS is more than a scholarship for me; it

is a family that I can always rely on for anything. They helped me work

through the emotional struggles of my mother having cancer, as well as

self-esteem issues of feeling worthy of attending a private school. HFS

helped me become comfortable with express-

ing my leadership skills and embracing things

in my life that are important to me, like service.

Feed My Starving Children is one of my favorite

HFS events. It is a time that every scholar and

mentor is together bonding, making memories

and a difference in the world.

During freshman year we began our college and career readiness journey

with HFS. They stressed the importance of taking advantage of every

opportunity available. Without HFS I would not have been able to attend

Trinity High School and experience a new environment. I was able to step

out of my comfort zone and create everlasting relationships and networks.

Thanks to HFS, I am a Posse Scholar! In the fall, I will attend my dream

school, Pomona College, on a full ride. I am worthy of — and grateful for

— the opportunity to have received a wonderful education. I will continue

to do my best and make my mother and my HFS family proud!
