From the Principal
These past two weeks have seen a variety of
activities that only a central school could
facilitate and demonstrates our scope of
educational opportunities and work. We have sent home Father’s Day gifts and best wishes,
liaised with our Local Aboriginal Lands Council around some exciting cultural investigations,
negotiated with Year 12 around their end of school functions, liaised as best as we can with the
pre-school around our Kindergarten transition that has been put on hold due to Covid-19
restrictions. We also resurfaced our tennis court and look forward to opening it up to community
use, purchased Finger Lime trees for our Year 4/5 class, observed Year 11 students developing
pod casts in English, Year 9 Science students constructing simple electric motors, our 2020 cross
country event, Year 9/10 Food Technology hosting a guest chef (Mr Mario Pintus), and our
Agriculture class attended a lamb marking field trip. Suffice to say, that whilst we are still
adhering to our current restrictions, our students are excelling at engaging and high-quality
learning activities at Ashford Central School!
To make things even better here at ACS, we have also welcomed even more wonderful students
and their families to our school and community.
Cross Country:
We held our Cross Country on Friday last week
without our wonderful parents and community
members, but with respectful and athletic students
that tried their best in quite warmer conditions than
normal for this event. I congratulate our champions
and all our students that attended and supported our
school. I also want to ensure that the staff are thanked
in facilitating all the far-flung stations and way points
around the track as well as all the setup, line marking
and organisation in running such an event.
The standard you walk past, is the standard you
accept.

From the Principal - Continued... STAR Focus: Being Prepared
With the weather warming up and our Covid-19 restrictions still in place, please ensure that all students are
attending school with a labelled jumper and a water bottle. We are still not able to use the bubblers at this point so
the use of a water bottle is essential for all.
School Engagement Improvements:
Across the course of this year, we will be hosting a multitude of events to gauge school and community advice and
satisfaction with our school progress and planning. Having a learning environment that is well resourced and
inviting promotes strong learning and engagement for our students and staff. Our School Planning Committee has
been unable to meet for a long period of time over the Covid-19 situation and therefore, we are asking for all
members of our community to take part in surveys to help us gauge how we are going and what we could work on
to further improve our school for all.
One significant and high impact change is planned for our secondary students. Our Year 7-10 grade levels have
small student numbers, and as teenagers, can be hard to get to school at times and occasionally hard to engage in
learning. Given these assumptions, we are embarking upon a shift in learning delivery from 2021 onwards for these
year levels. We are amending and reappropriating our timetable to include highly engaging and student-directed
‘Flexi Future Focused Learning’. At its most simple form, these lessons will have core literacy and numeracy syllabus
outcomes embedded into activity-based and hands-on activities from a variety of Key Learning Areas. An example
being a unit titled: “What Happens If I Do That?!” this unit could be focused on physics and chemistry in Science
and incorporate highly engaging practical experiments. Students not only get to learn fun and interesting science
outcomes, but they are also participating in many literacy and numeracy outcomes. The student then begins to
pose their own hypothesis and undertake supervised experiments that are student led. Another example may be
“Triathlon Training”, or “Horrible Deaths and Battles in History”. The purpose of this change being that by shifting
our approach to delivery of content already in our syllabi and incorporating enhanced engagement strategies, we
expect to drive student attendance, engagement and ultimately achievement across all learning areas.

9/10 Food Technology This term, Year 9/10 Food Technology Class have been studying a unit called “Bush Tucker to
contemporary cuisine”. We have cooked dishes using bush tucker ingredients and meals from various
countries of the world. The highlight of the topic was having Mr Pintus as our celebrity chef. He helped
the students prepare and cook Spinach and Ricotta Cannelloni which is a traditional Italian dish.
Mr Pintus also shared stories about his Italian heritage and growing up in Ashford. It was a very
enjoyable lesson and the food was delicious! Thank you, Mr Pintus.

4/5 Planting Lettuce for Science
Year 9 Science
Year 9 Science have been working on a
unit called ‘ What’s your Voltage’ this
term. As part of the unit students were
asked to develop a model electric mo-
tor.
The students needed to set up a coil of
wire that balanced in a cradle. The cradle
was attached to a power pack as the
source of electric current. The coil then
produces a magnetic field. By placing free
magnets near the coil a second field is
introduced. The fields repel causing the
coil to move . The students were very
successful at developing a working
electric motor.

A message from Cams Cause:
We are delighted to introduce you to our first ever Junior Ambassador Zee. After watching Australian Story ‘The Last Commando’ with her mum, she was inspired to help raise money for Cam’s Cause. Zee who lives in rural NSW, raised $52 from selling horse manure at the front gate on her parent’s property. Well done Zee and welcome to the Cam’s Cause Team. #CameronBairdVCMG #AspireToInspore #CamsCase
