Enjoy your donut with a side of fellowship. ———————————— Modesty in Clothing Please be mindful, especially during these hot days, of modesty in clothing when dressing for Holy Mass. One’s attire should not distract from another’s prayer. Appropriate apparel should not be tight-fitting or revealing (for both men and women). Our attention should be focused towards the Lord. Thank you for your attention to this matter. ———————————— ***Reminder: No meetings in the Family Learning Center for the whole month of JULY - Please plan accordingly. Any questions, ask Joe Mastroieni. ———————————— Please see the rest of the bulletin for more news and events.

Dear Parishioners, There is an old George Gershwin song popularized by Ella Fitzgerald in the 1950's that begins with the slow refrain: “Summertime and the livin' is easy.” Although these words may be a quintessential description of summer leisure, they are not necessarily an essential description of leisure that takes place during the summer. By and large, summer is a time in which we all tend to plan for and take a break. As children, it is when we go out and play, create games and competitions, spend time outside with family and friends. As adults, the summer is typically the season in which trips are planned and breaks are taken. The summer is packed with family vacations and barbecues, camping trips and water balloon battles. It is the best! You may be thinking to yourself, this is just the needless reminiscing of Fr. Brian’s summer experiences, what place does this have in a Sunday Bulletin? Well, I'd say that much can be lost or much can be gained in the way we spend our free time, in the way that we rest, or in the way that we approach leisure. Summer is typically when the popes take some days off in order to enjoy recreation (literally re-create or renew oneself). St. John Paul II, spent a portion of some 25 summers at Castel Gandolfo located in the Alban Hills of Italy. He helps us to understand the importance of these moments in our lives, because as he explains: “it not just any kind of interruption of work, but the celebration of the marvels which God has wrought.” The Neo-Thomistic contemporary philosopher, Joseph Pieper, said that real leisure is not taking it easy, but it is to assure that we, so often consumed by work, are able to remain fully human. That we may not lose the ability to look beyond, to look beyond the limits of our social and functional station in life, “to contemplate and celebrate the world as such, to become and be that person who is essentially oriented toward the whole of reality.” Therefore, when we recover our ability to be fully human we are able to cultivate serenity, joy and peace. Leisure, says Pieper, is not just simply the absence of work, for example, idleness, or a lack of deadlines. Rather, leisure really pertains to the cultivation of goodness in souls; about cultivating a sense of wonder, building relationships and conversation, dedicating ourselves to those things that are truly and exclusively human. Leisure is the basis of culture and the basis by which we can grow in things that truly elevate the human spirit. And the summer months afford us opportunities to not simply do more things, but to focus on family bonds, on friendship, wisdom, and wonder—through leisure. Now, you are probably getting nervous and thinking to yourself that this is going to be something way too complicated. Real leisure is as simple as gardening, or inviting a close family over to eat out on the back porch with the grill going and mosquitos flying. Something as simple going beyond the city limits to spend the evening quietly staring up at the stars blanketed across the clear horizon. Real leisure is walking around the shrine while your kids play in the grass and then stopping in at dusk to visit our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament before going to get ice cream as a couple or as a family. Leisure is reading a good book, or even learning to play an instrument in order to make music good wholesome music with family and friends. In the virtual-technological age, which is oftentimes impersonal and superficial, we stand in need to appreciate and cultivate true leisure, one that forms connections, habits and customs that build authentic Christian Culture. The Kingdom of God is a person, Jesus Christ, and the faith that we share is not simply the adherence to a program, but it is the belief in the testimony of a person. This is how Jesus passed along the truth of the Kingdom, from one person to the next, heart to heart. This is helpful for us to keep in mind, because perhaps the most effective tool we now have for evangelization is the one that it began with, a relationship among friends. Summer then becomes not a time for just “easy livin’,” but a time for evangelization in the context of leisure, in relationships, in activities and conversations with family, neighbors and friends. Take a break this summer, but cultivate true goodness in your souls and beauty in the world around you. Mary, Our Lady of Peace, pray for us,

Fr. Brian Dinkel, IVE

Looking for a New Year’s Resolution? Sign up for a weekly Holy Hour in Euchar istic Adoration of Our Lord in the Most Holy Eucharist. Perpetual Adoration takes place 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year inside the

church.

Are You a Registered Parishioner?

If you attend Mass here regularly, we encourage you to register as a member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church.

3 main reasons why registering is important:

1. If we as a parish do not know who is out there, how can we serve the needs of all? This includes single people or young families who may not see the need to register.

2. Registering in the parish makes Sacrament prep easier when the time comes. Infant baptisms, religious education registration, being a godparent/sponsor for baptisms or confirmations, and especially getting married whether

you are getting married at this parish, another parish, or having an international Catholic wedding. If you’re not a registered parishioner this will greatly delay the process.

3. Letters of Recommendation Sometimes there are occasions where letters of recommendations are needed from your parish pastor (ie Catholic school enrollment, scholarships,

godparent eligibility, etc.). If you’re not registered, we cannot provide this letter to you or your family.

Anyone, regardless of where they live and even though the Diocese is divided into parish geographical areas, is welcome to register at OLOP. Please note: there is a three (3) month waiting period from the date of registration before

being considered a full-fledged registered parishioner. Any requests for pastor signatures on any forms, letters, or wedding preparation paperwork will not be processed within the 3 months.

Registering is easy!

Visit the Parish Office, call the Rectory Office (408-988-4585) or email us ([email protected]) to request a registration form.

Ignatius of Loyola Soldier. Sinner. Saint

“Ignatius of Loyola is not a simplistic chil-dren’s film, not a mere biography outlining the basic achievements of the saint’s life from birth to death. Here you will meet

“Inigo” as a person, sharing his very human dreams, frustrations, struggles, & eventual

conversion. As you experience Inigo’s gradual (& often painful) journey from su-

Glory of God, you will be moved, inspired, & awed by the way God leads us from who

we are to who He destined us to be.” -Vinny Flynn, Author 7 Secrets of Divine
