Christ the Unknown:

In our everyday lives, it is easy to know that when we love someone truly, we want to spend me with that person; know the person more and more. We seek to know what they like and don’t like, wan ng to know everything that pertains to that person. Obviously, this also happens in the supernatural order. If we say that we love Jesus Christ, how could we not desire to be with Him? Why would we not desire to know Him more? To try to know what He knew, love what He loved, think about what He thought. St. Thomas Aquinas says that when we love someone, we love everything about that person.

St. John the Bap st has said to us this Advent: “I am bap zing you with water; but there is one standing in your midst of whom you know nothing.” (John 1:26)

Do these words apply to us to some degree or another? If so, we may ask ourselves, how can we know Christ be er? The knowledge that we have is through the Faith, and this knowledge is deepened through prayer, which is simply spending me with a friend. This is how we begin to know His likes, His criteria for life in abundance, His thoughts, His feelings, knowing and following His paths, because all Chris ans should trace the path set by Jesus if we truly want to be His followers.

Above all, in our age, it is me for individuals to procure an in mate personal knowledge of Christ. Let us admit that there is a very poor knowledge of Jesus Christ; there is a very superficial knowledge of Him based on accidental characteris cs. It’s like knowing somebody by their external characteris cs – oh I know Tom, he’s the tall guy; or yeah, I know Susan, she the lady with short brown hair. For this reason, it is not strange that even among Chris ans, the person of Jesus is distorted according to the lens through which one looks at Him—the superstar, the first freedom-fighter, the first true socialist. And we should not be surprised if many believe in this, why? Because, down deep they do not know the true Jesus. There is a lack of true knowledge that is the fruit of Love, love which is the source of a true and greater knowledge.

Should the way in which we spend our me grab our a en on? It seems that there is so much me and effort spent on informing oneself about celebrity news, entertainment gossip, public scandals, the personal lives of this actors, sports stars and poli cians. We can ask ourselves, what about Jesus Christ? How applicable are the words of St. John the Bap st? “I am bap zing you with water; but there is one standing in your midst of whom you know nothing.” How do we respond if someone says to you, “tell me something about your Christ?” What if we have nothing to say? We may ask, why not? Is it a ques on of the mind or is it perhaps a ques on of the heart? It is important for us to look to grow in our true knowledge of Christ, so that the Holy Spirit may paint within our souls the image of Jesus Christ. As it was done in the Apostle St. Paul, who said: “I have been crucified with Christ; yet I live, no longer I, but Christ lives in me; insofar as I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God who has loved me and given himself up for me.”

Let us, during the remainder of this Advent and into the Christmas me, meet the Great Unknown, Jesus Christ who was Incarnate for me, who entered silently and humbly as a babe in a manger for me, and who wants to be loved by me.

Mary, Queen of Peace, pray for us,

Fr. Brian

Stewardship/Discipleship this Christmas

Whether it be Time, Treasure, or Talent, all Chris an stewards must consider prayerfully the gi s they have received from God, and they should make a decision (in advance from the "first fruits" instead of what is le over a er obliga ons have been met) about what will be given. We give back out of LOVE, and in THANKSGIVING, a por on of every gi that has been given to us.

Time is one of the most precious gi s we have. How we spend our me is one of the most important indica ons of what is important in our lives. Your me is YOUR gi to share. Are you good at coun ng, security duty? Could you help in the library, or assist our religious educa on teachers in the classroom once a week? Maybe help cover the rectory office recep on desk 2 hours/week?

Please visit www.dsj.org/volunteers for a volunteer applica on and brochures explaining our safe environment policies then call Clorinda Lopez in the rectory (M-W) for more informa on on volunteer oppor-tuni es and procedures specific to Our Lady of Peace Church.

Your weekly offerings to the parish are what keep the lights on, the grass mowed, the flowers tended, and allow us to provide weekly service to parishioners. Your one- me gi s allow for special liturgical events and speakers to reach out to the community and maintain special programs. Envelopes are placed at the ves bule and old hall. You may also pick up a credit card charge form from the front office, or register on our website (click “donate” bu on) for one- me and on-going transac ons.

Year-End Gi s as Tax Deduc ons may be a good op on for you. Federal and state laws on income and inheritance taxes encourage charitable giving. All dona ons to the ADA are ful-ly tax deduc ble (if you have not completed your pledges, please turn them in by December 31).

For stock transfers, please download a stock transfer form from the Dio-cese website www.dsj.org/ways-to-give/stock-transfers/ or contact Karen Ruiz at 408-988-4585 x2125. For Estate Planning, visit www.dsj.org/ways-to-give/estate-planning-2/financial and charitable planning-guide/. Popular ways to give are through Wills and living trusts but there are many op ons to consider. Visit h p://plannedgiving.dsj.org/ to review op ons or contact the director of Stewardship and Development, Bill Ma hews, at 408-983-0244. Please make sure you specify that Our Lady of Peace Church is the intended recipient.

In many cases, the tax savings may be more than the original investment in the gi . Because each situa on is unique, however, we urge donors to discuss such dona ons with a financial advisor.

Posi ons Available at Our Lady of Peace Church and Shrine!

($14.95) From Fr. Ga-briele Amorth, the re-

nowned exorcist in Rome, comes this pow-erful, eye-opening book on the deadly antics of Satan & his fallen an-

gels, as well as spiritual remedies for each.

These pages provide a basic orientation in the dark phenomenology, succinctly explaining

Catholic doctrine on the fallen angels & their innumerable manifestations. Among the many questions Fr. Amorth answers in this book are: - Do the sins of our ancestors influence our life? - What is the state of souls in purgatory? - What is the role of sacramental in fighting temptation? - When should exorcisms & prayers of healing be performed? - What happens during an exorcism?
