21ST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
“Jesus said to them: ‘Who do you say that I am.’”
This is one of the most fundamental questions
that define who we are as people of God, the
Church. Church isn’t something that we go to once
a week, but is an identity we share as members of a
community, the Body of Christ. We are to be the
presence of Christ to others by living our lives the
way he did. We are to build up this Body, this
church, by responding to others in need just as he
would. In these, and in many other ways, we are not
only building up the church, we are witnessing to
our identity with the church. Can we say, with Peter,
when Jesus asks us that most fundamental question:
“You are the Christ, the Son of the living God”, and
then add: we are your Body, the church, here on
earth.
CATHOLIC HOME MISSIONS APPEAL
The 2 nd collection this weekend is the Catholic
Home Missions Appeal. Right now, over 40% of
dioceses in the United States are considered mission
territory because they are unable to fund essential
pastoral work in their communities. Your support of
this appeal eases the struggle and assists in forming
vibrant faith communities. Please prayerfully consider
how you can support this appeal. Thank you again for
your assistance with this important work.
The spiritual lives of our families are
strengthened through our Holy Hour - St. Pope
John Paul II.

PRAYER FOR ALL THINGS RISING
“For all things rising: Out of the hiddenness of
shadows. Out of the weight of despair. Out of
the brokenness of pain. Out of the constrictions of
compliance. Out of the rigidity of stereotypes.
Out of the prism of prejudice. For all things rising:
Into life. Into hope. Into healing. Into power.
Into freedom. Into justice. We pray, O God, for all
things rising. Jan Richardson
St AUGUSTINE – BISHOP and DOCTOR of the
CHURCH
St. Augustine was born to a pagan father and very
devout Christian mother, St. Monica. He began life in
a most un-saintly way, living a life of wine, women,
and song, as we might say today. Through his
mother’s unrelenting prayers, and a friendship with St.
Ambrose, he eventually converted to Christianity, was
ordained a priest, and then became Bishop of Hippo in
396. His prolific writing formulated theories and
doctrines on original sin, just war, human will,
divine predestination, the Trinity, and Christology. St.
Augustine’s feast day is Friday, August 28.
