February 18, 2018 • 1st Sunday of Lent ~ 1° Domingo de la Cuaresma | Holy Family Catholic Church & School Pastoral Council Agenda Item – Realignment and Reduction of Sunday Masses The pews in Holy Family Church can hold over 650 people for Mass on Sunday. An efficient use of the building and utilities would hope that it would be at least half-full for any celebration of the Mass. That would mean that we should have about 300 people at each Mass. Currently, only our 10:30 AM Mass and our 12:30 PM Mass have an aver- age attendance over 300 people. While the convenience of having Masses at Holy Family Church for 6 times on a weekend is a great blessing, with the decline in the number of priests in the diocese, the ability to have that many Mass- es on a weekend will not be able to continue in the near future. While we are blessed right now with two priests at Holy Family Church, the needs other parish communities in the diocese is growing and we may be reduced down to on- ly one priest at Holy Family. When that happens, the cur- rent Mass schedule cannot be sustained, as each priest should only say 3 Masses on a Sunday. The health and abil- ity of the priest is also to be considered. With this in mind, Fr. Patrick and the Parish Council have been reviewing this for over a year. At the January 25, 2018 meeting of the Pastoral Council, the members again re- viewed the most current Mass Attendance Counts of Holy Family Church for two different time periods. The average weekly attendance at Mass was only 1,240 persons. Several considerations were included in the discussions: 1) Equal changes for both the English speaking and Spanish speaking communities of the parish; 2) Current and future Religious Education program times; 3) Time needed for Masses with additional ceremonies (RCIA rites); 4) Times and Language availability of Sunday Mass at neighboring parishes; 5) parish traditions; 6) The health and care of our priests as they serve the parish; and 7) Single language Masses versus Bi-Lingual Masses; 8) making a request toward the choirs to reassign themselves as might be needed to any adjustments. It was the decision of the Council to inform the parish of these findings and ask for additional input from the parishioners. As we do so, I urge the parishioners to think of the good of our priests and the good of the WHOLE parish community. The next meeting of the Parish Pastoral Council is Thursday, February 22, 2018 in the Father Fernandez Center at 7:00 p.m. and all parishioners are invited to come and listen to the discussions. Please remember that the Eucharistic Celebration belongs to all the parish communi- ty, and persons should not speak of “my Mass time”. The first and most obvious consideration would be to look at the three Masses with the lowest attendance – 7 AM in Spanish, 8:30 AM in English, and 6 PM on Sunday in English. The second consideration is the Religious Education program on Sunday Mornings from 9:00 AM to 10:20 AM. The third consideration was language used at the Mass - English, Spanish, or Bi-Lingual. One of the proposed schedules was: Please take time and review these proposals. Please take them to prayer and think of the needs of the whole parish, not just what is my need. We come together as Church to proclaim our faith in Jesus and to accept our responsibility to become missionary disciples of the Gospel Message. I look forward to discussing this question at the February Meeting. Dios Bendiga. Pastoral Council Agenda Item – Realignment and Reduction of Sunday Masses

The pews in Holy Family Church can hold over 650 people for Mass on Sunday. An efficient use of the building and utilities would hope that it would be at least half-full for any celebration of the Mass. That would mean that we should have about 300 people at each Mass. Currently, only our 10:30 AM Mass and our 12:30 PM Mass have an aver-age attendance over 300 people. While the convenience of having Masses at Holy Family Church for 6 times on a weekend is a great blessing, with the decline in the number of priests in the diocese, the ability to have that many Mass-es on a weekend will not be able to continue in the near future. While we are blessed right now with two priests at Holy Family Church, the needs other parish communities in the diocese is growing and we may be reduced down to on-ly one priest at Holy Family. When that happens, the cur-rent Mass schedule cannot be sustained, as each priest should only say 3 Masses on a Sunday. The health and abil-ity of the priest is also to be considered.

With this in mind, Fr. Patrick and the Parish Council have been reviewing this for over a year. At the January 25, 2018 meeting of the Pastoral Council, the members again re-viewed the most current Mass Attendance Counts of Holy Family Church for two different time periods.

Please take time and review these proposals.

Dios Los Bendiga.

Gospel Meditation for 1st Sunday of Lent ~ Reflect and Believe! Why do we always go to the desert? We see this example in Scripture time and time again. The Israelites wandered in the desert. King David and prophets were driven into the wilderness. And now Jesus is in the same place. Lent after Lent, we too are invited into a barren, desolate place. Why do we always go to the desert?

Throughout Scripture, the desert is a place of testing. It's also a place of hiding and withdrawal. In the Old Testament, David fled into the wilderness to hide from Saul, Elijah from Jezebel, and Jonah from God! In other words, the desert is a place of "retreat." In Christian circles, we use the word to describe a spiritual weekend away. But its meaning comes from warfare, as we well know. To retreat means to draw back, to separate oneself from the fighting. Of course, a military retreat brings its own kind of "battle" - the internal assessment of why the fighting went so poorly.

As we enter into this Lenten season, we are invited to retreat into the desert with Jesus. Attending a day or weekend of reflection is a wonderful spiritual practice. This "desert spirituality," however, can fill all forty days. We can fulfill our Lenten resolutions with a purpose - writing daily notes to family and friends can inspire new gratitude, every time we pass up that specific food item can be cause for intercession for deeper sufferings and privations of others.

The Gospel tells us that "the Spirit drove him out into the desert." In other words, God wants us to be here. What feels uncomfortable is actually part of our spiritual journey. To be stretched, to be challenged, to confront our own areas of weakness - these things are essential in our walk with God. This Lent, will you go to the desert?
