GOSPEL MEDITATION Encourage Deeper Understanding of Scripture

A single mother who has a child with special needs works two jobs and sacrifices much of her own pleasures in order to be available for her son. Being the best mother possible is important to her and brings her joy. We are willing to make great and often heroic sacrifices for those people and things that matter most to us. Unless there is something of obvious importance to us in our immediate path, we can easily approach life in a more haphazard and chaotic way. We jump from one thing to another, responding to whatever it is that is competing for our attention at that moment. When everything is important, nothing is important.

If we do not wear the right pair of glasses, we can get all too easily caught up in the superficial stuff and neglect paying attention to the things that really matter. The kingdom of God is like the pearl of great price that is worth selling everything for so that it can be obtained. Based on where I invest my time and energy each day, I really wonder whether I am serving God’s kingdom or my own. Have you ever considered tracking how you spend your time? You may be surprised! We allow our agendas to set the clock of our lives. We forget that joy and a true sense of purpose are not going to be found in following that timepiece. Joy is the expression of the happiness that is discovered when living in the kingdom of God. When our agenda matches God, not only do we leap for joy but God leaps with delight as well. Our well-being is what matters most to God.

Can you imagine God delighting in you? It is easy to deaden our senses to the whole reality of God and the joy that living the Gospel can bring. The demands of secular life and the agendas competing for our attention can quickly do that. We can get tired and spiritually apathetic. But if we can see our way through all of the conflicting voices and hear the voice of God, we can rediscover our zeal and passion and redirect our efforts. When we begin to see as God sees, we can rise each day and notice what really needs our attention and embrace it with exuberance. Be careful, though. It may not be what we originally had on our list. Responding to it, however, will be worth putting everything else aside.

First Reading “Give your servant,

therefore, an understanding heart

to judge your people and to distinguish right

from wrong.” (1 Kgs 3:9a)

Psalm Lord, I love your

commands. (Ps 119)

Second Reading We know that all things work for good for those who love God, who are

called according to his purpose. (Rom 8:28)

Gospel “The kingdom of heaven is

like a treasure buried in a field, which a person finds

and hides again, and

out of joy goes and sells all that he has and buys

that field.” (Mt 13:44)

FAMILY FAITH MOMENTS

The Feast Day of St. Ignatius of Loyola is July 31. After reading about Christ and lives of the Saints, while recovering from a war injury, Ignatius turned his life around. He gave up his uniform and sword and dedicated his life to God’s service. He returned to school at the University of Paris to study theology, serve the poor and to pray often. Ignatius wrote his Spiritual Exercises, a guidebook for closer union with God. As others came to share in his vision, the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) was formed. Some became missionaries, others began schools.

Celebrating the Feast Days of the Saints at home. After spending a day outdoors and getting plenty of physical exercise, try some spiritual exercise by spending quiet restful time with God. Read a Bible story, a story about a Saint, or spend time just in quiet prayer.

PRAY the ROSARY

All are invited to pray the Rosary at 8:00 am (before the 8:30 am Mass) at Our Lady of the Rosary.

Please note that the new time will be 8:30 am when the new Mass schedule begins on August 1 and the Mass at Our Lady of the Rosary is at 9:00 am.

We have been closely monitoring the Mass attendance in our region since we returned on May 31. With the risks associated with COVID-19 and given that the obligation to attend Mass is not going to be reinstated anytime soon, the Mass schedule will change the weekend of August 1 and 2. There will be no 6:00 evening Mass at St. Peter, and the only Sunday Mass at Our Lady of the Rosary will be at 9:00 am. All other Masses remain the same. The new schedule is listed below.

ST. PETER CHURCH Saturday Vigil @ 4:30 PM

Sunday Masses @ 7:30, 9:00, and 11:00 AM

OUR LADY of the ROSARY CHURCH Saturday Vigil @ 5:00 PM Sunday Mass @ 9:00 AM

HOLY CROSS CHURCH Sunday Mass @ 10:30 AM

ACT of SPIRITUAL

COMMUNION

My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the

Most Holy Sacrament. I love you above all

things, and I desire to receive you into my soul.

Since I cannot at this moment receive you

sacramentally, come at least spiritually

into my heart. I embrace you

as if you were already there and unite myself

wholly to you. Never permit me to be

separated from you.

THE ANGELUS

V/. The Angel of the Lord declared unto Mary. R/. And she conceived of the Holy Spirit.

Hail Mary…

V/. Behold the handmaid of the Lord. R/. Be it done unto me according to Your Word.

Hail Mary…

V/. The word became flesh R/. And dwelt among us.

Hail Mary…

V/. Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God R/. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray. Pour forth, we beseech You, O Lord, Your grace into our hearts: that we, to whom the Incarnation of Christ, Your Son, was made known by the message of an Angel, may, by His passion and cross be brought to the joy of His Resurrection, through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

ST. MARTHA: July 29 Feast Day

Martha, Mary, and their brother Lazarus were

evidently close friends of Jesus. He came to

their home simply as a welcomed guest, rather

than as one celebrating the conversion of a

sinner like Zacchaeus or one unceremoniously

received by a suspicious Pharisee. The sisters

feel free to call on Jesus at their brother’s

death, even though a return to Judea at that

time seems almost certain death.

No doubt Martha was an active sort of person.

On one occasion, she prepares the meal for

Jesus and possibly His fellow guests and

forthrightly states the obvious: All hands should

pitch in to help with the dinner.

Yet, as biblical scholar Father John McKenzie

points out, she need not be rated as an

“unrecollected activist.” The evangelist is

emphasizing what our Lord said on several

occasions about the primacy of the spiritual:

“…[D]o not worry about your life, what you will

eat [or drink], or about your body, what you will

wear…. But seek first the kingdom [of God]

and his righteousness” (Matthew 6:25b, 33a);

“One does not live by bread alone” (Luke 4:4b);

“Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for

righteousness…” (Matthew 5:6a).

Martha’s great glory is her simple and strong

statement of faith in Jesus after her brother’s

death. “Jesus told

her, I am the

resurrection and the

life; whoever believes

in me, even if he dies,

will live, and everyone

who lives and

believes in me will

never die. Do you

believe this?’ She said

to him, ‘Yes, Lord. I

have come to

believe that you are

the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who is

coming into the world’” (John 11:25-27).
