We are now in the Fourth Sunday of Easter and this week we do not have a resurrection appearance story. The church gives us instead this parable or, in the words of the gospel, a “ igure of speech” from Jesus himself. Though the term is not used in these ten verses, this is the beginning of the Good Shepherd parabolic discourse. This section might be more properly called the Gate discourse, wherein Jesus says he is the gate through which the sheep enter and are saved. The distinction of Jesus as gate is signi icant and should not immediately be con lated with Jesus as Good Shepherd, which is stated explicitly later in this chapter. Here we see Jesus as the Gate with an accompanying image of the gatekeeper. The images in this igure of speech are rooted in antiquity, or at least a different culture. A sheepfold, for example, is typically a small or low stone fence/wall that is open to the sky. The proper way to enter is via the gate. Thus, Jesus says the one who climbs over the stone wall is a thief and arobber. The means to entry is the gate. Further, the sheep will hear the voice of the gatekeeper and follow him, but they do not recognize and will not follow the voice of strangers. Apparently, this imagery went over the heads of Jesus’ audience so he said explicitly, I am the gate. The Fourth Gospel never uses the term “parable”; that is a term used in the Synoptic Gospels. As we saw above, the evangelist says that Jesus taught in a “ igure of speech.” Rather than parables, in the Fourth Gospel we might say Jesus speaks in “parabolic discourse.” The difference might seem to be splitting hairs, but what it means is that rather than saying the kingdom of heaven is like . . ., Jesus says, I am . . . So, for example, rather than saying, Thekingdomofheavenislikeasheepfoldandthegatethrough which the sheep enter and leave, Jesus says, I am the gate. Similarly, Jesus will say in the Gospel of John, I am the Good Shepherd, I am the Vine, I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life, or I am the Resurrection. All of these are ig-ures of speech and parabolic discourses. We recall in this Easter season that Jesus is the gate through which we are saved. Jesus is the means by which we enter the sheepfold, paradise, heaven itself.

New Mass Directives

Call the SMdP Parish of ice at 478-3845 to be placed on a reservation list for upcoming Masses. As noted in the directives above, only 10 persons are allowed in the church for Mass. Tuesday - Friday there will be 9 parishioners allowed to come to Mass. The weekend Masses will be limited to 5 parishioners due to the additional ministers needed. These restrictions are in place till May 15 and are subject to change.

Have you considered Altar Flowers in memory of a loved one or to celebrate a special occasion, like a wedding, convalidation or special anniversary? The lowers will sit in the sanctuary and add beauty to the liturgy and your special occasion will be noted in the bulletin. A donation of $75 - $100 or more will cover the cost of the lowers.
