    Joke of the Week

    The Telephone

While on vacation in Rome, I noticed a marble column in St. Peter’s with a golden telephone on it. As a young priest passed by, I asked who the telephone was for. The priest told me it was a direct line to heaven, and if I’d like to call, it would be a $1,000. I was amazed, but declined the offer. Throughout Italy, I kept seeing the same golden telephone on a marble column. At each, I asked about it and the answer was the same: It was a direct line to heaven and I could call for a $1,000. Then I trav-eled to Ireland for the final leg of my trip. I decided to attend Mass at a local village church. When I walked in the door I no-ticed the golden telephone. Underneath it there was a sign stating: “DIRECT LINE TO HEAVEN 25 cents.” “Father,” I said,” I have been all over Italy and in all the cathedrals I vis-ited, I’ve seen telephones exactly like this one. But the price is always $1,000. Why is it that this one is only 25 cents?” The priest smiled and said, “My dear, you’re in Ireland now.”

Spread the Gospel, the Good News about Jesus and His St. Anthony Family A HOLY COMMUNITY THROUGH HOLY COMMUNION! Your brother in Jesus,

    Saint of the Week

Martin Luther King, Jr. Apostle of Freedom (1929 - 1968)

At the age of twenty-six, Martin Luther King, Jr., a young Baptist minister, won fame for his leadership of the bus boycott in Montgomery, Alabama, a protest against segregation that eventually galvanized a new civil rights movement throughout the south. One night in 1956, he received a particularly vicious death threat. Though it was not his first, somehow, on this occasion, it brought him to the limit of his strength. While sitting in the kitchen with a cup of coffee he turned himself over to God. “Almost out of nowhere I heard a voice. ‘Martin Luther, stand up for righteousness. Stand up for justice. Stand up for truth. And lo, I will be with you, even until the end of the world.’” Af-terward, he said, “I was ready to face anything.” In 1964 King won the Nobel Peace Prize. But he was never tempted to rest on his laurels at the expense of his prophetic calling. Until the end he continued to reach deeper into the roots of social injustice and hatred and further into the radical challenge of the Gospel. When he spoke out against the Viet-nam War and tried to forge the bonds of an alliance to over-come poverty, he was denounced by the head of the FBI as the most dangerous man in America. On April 4, 1968, he was assassinated in Memphis, where he had gone to lend support to striking sanitation workers. “Well, I don’t know what will happen now. We’ve got some diffi-cult days ahead. But it doesn’t matter with me now. Because I’ve been to the mountaintop….. And I’ve seen the promised land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know to-night that we, as a people, will get to the promised land.” -Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., at a rally the night before his death

-Pope Francis, Prayer for Peace at Meeting with the Assyrian-Chaldean Community-9/30/16

Lord Jesus, unite to your cross the sufferings of the many innocent victims: the children, the elderly, and the persecuted Christians; envelop in paschal light those who are deeply wounded: abused persons, deprived of freedom and dignity; let those who live in uncertainty experience the enduring con-stancy of your kingdom: the exiles, refugees, and those who have lost the joy of living.

Lord Jesus, cast forth the shadow of your cross over peoples at war; may they learn the way of reconciliation, dialogue and forgive-ness; let the peoples so wearied by bombing experience the joy of your resurrection: raise up Iraq and Syria from devastation; reunite your dispersed children under your gentle kingship: sustain Christians in the Diaspora and grant them the unity of faith and love.

O Virgin Mary, Queen of peace, you who stood at the foot of the cross, obtain from your Son pardon for our sins; you who never doubted the victory of his resurrection, sustain our faith and our hope; you who are enthroned as Queen in glory, teach us the royal road of service and the glory of love.

    Amen.

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity

The Catholic Church takes to heart the prayer Jesus offered to the Father the day before He suffered. “That all may be one!”, and therefore she strenuously encourages the faithful to pray

without ceasing for the unity of Christians.

Almighty and merciful God, who wished to gather the scat-tered nations into one people through your Son, grant that

those who glory in the name of Christian may put aside division and become one in truth and charity, and that all men and

women may be illumined by faith and brought together into the communion of one Church, through Christ our Lord.

    Amen.

    S P E A K , L O R D , W E A R E L I S T E N I N G

In today’s first reading God keeps calling out in the night to a sleeping boy. Neither the boy, Samuel, nor his teacher, Eli, un-derstands who is calling. But God’s persistence convinces them. Samuel is then ready—not ready yet to do anything, but ready to listen. “Speak, for your servant is listening” (1 Samuel 3:10). In the Gospel Jesus is out teaching. Various people notice him and begin to gather around. They soon become disciples and, like the young Samuel, are ready—not ready yet to do anything, but ready to listen. “Speak,” they say, “we are listening.” God’s voice is always with us, awake or asleep. It swirls around us like fog on a waterfront, enveloping us, gently urging us to wake up, to listen. Awareness of the voice comes first; then will-ingness to listen; then, in time, the decision to act, to live ac-cording to God’s word. Let’s ask today for the ability to keep our ears open so we don’t miss God’s voice.

Sunday of the Word of God

Last year Pope Francis issued an apostolic letter enti-tled Aperuit illis instituting that the Third Sunday of Ordi-nary Time will annually be observed as the Sunday of the Word of God for all dioceses and churches through-out the world. The Third Sunday of Ordinary Time this year is January 24.

    Read full text here: Papa-francesco-motu-proprio-20190930_aperuit-illis.html

This annual observance provides an apt opportunity for parishes to encourage ways to bring attention to the Word of God in the lives of their people and to deepen their relationship with the Word.

    St. Anthony Church Interior Repairs

We have contracted Max Autenrieb Church Inte-rior Decorating, Inc., to repair the growing number of cracks in the ceiling and walls. (They are the company who helped with the renovation, almost 10 years ago). Cracks are not unusual over time. And the peeling be-hind the statues is not from exterior water leaks but from condensation from big heat vents below them which will now be directed away from the wall. The cost will be around $10,000. THANK YOU to each and all of you who donate through our Parish Repair/Improvement Envelopes, which allows us to keep our church, our House of God, so beautiful!

Some of you may have noticed work has finished on the church windows. The work is completed by Emil Frei and Associates. They are the best! And have been around St. Louis for genera-tions, having done most of the big

churches around. We are fairly sure they made our beautiful windows. They are also highly in demand around the country, so our work may not be done right away, which is not doing any further damage. Their work includes new tempered, unbreakable glass as exterior protective coverings for our 8 larger windows and 4 smaller windows on the front of our church, as well as exterior cleaning wood and lintel replacement, which will cost about $30,000 when it is finished. We have already a half of that saved up from your generous use of our monthly BUILDING FUND envelopes. We invite each of you to make a special donation to our Save our Stained Glass Windows Fund in a special envelope or your Capital Improvement envelope. We will honor in a special way anyone who donates $2,500 to cover the cost of one window, maybe in memory of someone. But any amount of your donation is most deeply appreciated and needed.
