Pastor’s Reflection

“Lift up your heads, you gates; lift them up, you ancient doors, that the King of Glo-

ry may come in” (Psalm 24:9). Psalm 24 invites us to pick up our heads and look

around. God is coming; it is time to greet him.

People of God, it is time to lift up our heads and see what the King is doing here

among us. 2020 is going to be a year where God does amazing things in our

midst.

Here are a few things that I see coming for us:

We will celebrate Wittenberg’s 150th anniversary year! We will look back

and look forward, seeing again what God has done and will do

through this congregation.

We will begin the hiring process for a new Youth Director. Council and the

Youth Committee have been working hard on getting the job descrip-

tion just right and making sure that the process will move us toward

God’s candidate for us.

We will finalize the plans for our building project. 2019 brought us plenty

of meetings, prayer, conversation, and deliberation. 2020 will be the

year that will bring us decisions, celebrations, giving, and maybe

even groundbreaking.

In all these things, I see God continuing to anchor us in our mission. We are gath-

ered in baptism, fed by worship, and sent to serve. Wittenberg has been a beacon

of service and a gathering place for worship throughout our history.

Every time we have guests, I hear compliments on the beauty of our worship

space. Visitors comment on the quality of our music program. They are welcomed

by a thoughtful and gracious building. And we are known as a congregation that

reaches out to our community. We are known for our quality preschool, for our

food pantry and soup kitchen, for being a place that people know to come to for

help.

These are things God has done in us and through us. These are things God is

continuing to do in us. I’m excited to see how the year will come together in 2020.

Please pray for our congregation and for our ministries as we head into this new

calendar year. Council will meet on the 11th for our annual retreat, to get our new

members brought up to speed and to focus ourselves on the mission for this year.

Please pray for Wittenberg and for our leaders all through this year. We are a con-

gregation on the move toward God’s preferred future for this world. Through hard

work and grace, God will continue to make us a place where God’s kingdom is

made known.

Peace,

Pastor Emily

A Note from the President - January Newsletter

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! We are excited for what 2020 has in store for Wittenberg: 150th Anniversary celebrations, Vision 20+20, opportunities to grow our faith, and opportunities to serve others and spread God’s love. On January 12th, we will officially install our 2020 Council members and officers at both worship ser-vices. We are thrilled to welcome our new Council members, Gerrie Gresham, Todd Long, Matt Shealy, and Patricia Tiffner, and we look forward to the gifts they bring to Council. In December, Council elected Wittenberg 2020 officers as follows: Financial Secretary - Connie Kramer, Treasurer - Brent Shealy, Secretary - Rebecca Reed, Vice President - Chris Taylor, and President - Brian Shealy. We would also like to thank our outgoing Council Members, Cher Davis, Jay Hendrix, Ann Nichols, and Chip Spradley for their dedication and service to the church. Your gifts and hard work will certainly be missed on Council this year. The 2020 Council will meet for a retreat on Saturday, January 11th. On February 9th, we will gather for All Committee night for a night of planning and goal setting with all of our committee mem-bers. Please mark your calendars for this important date.

Please join the 150th Anniversary Committee for First Sunday Lunch on January 5th following the 11 am service to hear about exciting plans to celebrate 150 years of Wittenberg ministry. Grace, mercy, and peace,

Brian Shealy

Congregation Meeting Minutes

Sunday, December 8, 2019, 11:00 a.m.

Call to Order – 11:03 a.m. President Brian Shealy Agenda Overview

2nd Reading - Constitutional Amendment - C13.06. Amendment passed after motion from Cher Davis, 2nd from Larry Dasher.

Wittenberg Preschool Budget – Budget passed without discussion after motion from council, 2nd from Ann Nichols.

Wittenberg Lutheran Church Budget – Motion from Mary Ann Shealy to increase our budget to include contributions to the 6 institutions of the S.C. Synod (S.C. Lutheran Retreat Centers, Lutheran Homes of S.C., NovusWay Ministries, Newberry College, Lutheran Theological Southern Semi-nary, and Lutheran Services Carolinas) by $300 each, for a total of $1800. 2nd Cher Davis. Ques-tion of where the funds would come from was raised, and President Brian explained the current proposed budget has a surplus of $1792, so the additional apportionment to the synod institutions would put the budget at essentially a zero balance. Amended budget passed.

Council Nominees (elect four to a 3-year term beginning 01/01/2020) – Patricia Tiffner, Todd Long, Matt Shealy and Gerrie Gresham. No additional nominations were made and motion was made to close the nominations. Motion from Ervin Caughman 2nd from Mary Ann Shealy. All 4 nominees were elected by voice vote.

Other New Business – none. Meeting adjourned at 11:16 a.m. after motion from Cher Davis, 2nd from Rebecca Reed.

Respectfully submitted, Rebecca Reed, Wittenberg Lutheran Church Council Secretary

WLPP Wittenberg Lutheran Preschool Program

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Can you believe the new year is here! December has come and gone and what a busy month it

was! We studied about the Nativity, learned new songs for the Christmas play, made candy cane

crafts and mittens, Christmas trees, ornaments, stockings, gingerbread, wreaths, Santa, elves, and

reindeer. We even had a soggy cookie test. Chocolate cookies fall apart the fastest! And I can’t

leave out our Christmas party with a visit from Mrs. Claus herself! Santa was busy with previous

engagements, but we loved having his wife join us. And then…the 23rd

, the one and only Grinch

showed up! Can you imagine the looks on the children’s faces! We also had a little friend with us

this year, Tinsel the elf. Our kids loved looking for our elf every morning when they came in.

January is a month of cold weather days and friends! The first part of the month will be spent stud-

ying different cold weather animals: Polar bears, Orca whales, penguins, arctic foxes, seals, cari-

bou and walruses. Then we will be moving into our studies about snow and ice. And for something

a little different, the last week of January, we will be studying about the Chinese New Year! Can’t

wait to share some pics from our adventures this month!

Sometimes when dealing with young children you wonder if what you are teaching them matters.

Do they understand? Does it register in those little minds? On Saturday, December 15th, we came

together for the dress rehearsal for the Christmas play. After practice, we were directed to the fel-

lowship hall where our kids were showered with cookies and snacks. Expecting everyone to dig in,

I was stopped dead in my tracks! Our kids didn’t start eating. And then, one of them said, “We

haven’t said the blessing!” I can’t tell you how proud that moment was for me! We all stopped,

heads dropped, as our little ones sang their blessing as we do during meals and snacks during

preschool. Children learn from example. Those little sponges remember. And once again, the stu-

dent became the teacher.
