St. Anthony of Padua, High Ridge, MO

Thanks and Congratulations to our New Catholics! These new Catholics are an Easter gift of Jesus to His Church! The Saint Anthony Parish Family welcomes all that received Sacraments and were received into full Communion with the Church at the beautiful Easter Vigil Mass on Holy Saturday. It has been a privilege to provide them with friend-ship, as well as guidance, throughout the process. Let us all welcome our newest sisters and brothers in Jesus and join them in committing ourselves to the service of our Risen Lord Jesus. Keep them all in your prayers throughout this Easter Season and into eternity.

We reflect on our brothers and sisters we have walked with, and we commit to bringing Easter joy to each person we meet in our daily lives. Don’t for-get to turn in your CRS Rice Bowl all Easter Season. Please put in collection baskets or place on step in front of altar.

Saint of the Week Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty

Priest (1898-1963)

In 1922, Hugh O’Flaherty, a young Iriah seminarian, was assigned dto pursue studies in Rome. Following his ordination in 1925, he stayed on to work for the Holy See, accepting diplomatic postings in Egypt, Haiti, Santo Domingo, and Czechoslovakia. While serving at the Vatican after the German occupation of Rome, O’Flaherty organized an ambi-tious network to rescue and shelter fugitives from the Nazis –both Jews and Allied prisoners of war, many of whom had escaped following the collapse of Mussolini’s regime. Operating under the noses of the Gestapo, O’Flaherty and the priests, nuns, and laypeople who assisted him, set up safe havens throughout Rome, some of them in churches, mon-asteries, and private homes. Operating without offi-cial approval from his superiors, O’Flaherty showed such ingenuity in his clandestine activities that he became known as “the Scarlet Pimpernel of the Vati-can.” Though the Gestapo learned of his exploits, they were powerless to stop him as long as he remained on Vatican territory. The head of the Gestapo, Col. Kappler, had a white line painted at the opening of St. Peter’s Square, warning O’Flaherty that he would be killed if he crossed beyond it. It is estimated that over 4,000 Allied prisoners of war and an untold number of Jews were rescued in this way. After the war O’Flaherty received many honors. For many years he regularly visited Col. Kappler in prison and eventually received him into the Church. After suffering a stroke in 1960, O’Flaherty returned to Ireland, where he died on October 30, 1963. “God has no country.” —Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty

Spread the Gospel, the Good News about Jesus and His St. Anthony Family. A Holy Community through Holy Communion! Your brother in Jesus,

Joke of the Week

A man was blissfully driving along the highway, when he saw the Easter Bunny hopping across the middle of the road. He swerved to avoid hitting the Bunny, but unfortunately the rabbit jumped in front of his car and was hit. The basket of eggs went flying all over the place. Candy, too. The driver, being a sensi-tive man as well as an animal lover, pulled over to the side of the road, and got out to see what had become of the Bunny carrying the basket. Much to his dismay, the colorful Bunny was dead. The driver felt guilty and began to cry. A woman driving down the same highway saw the man crying on the side of the road and pulled over. She stepped out of her car and asked the man what was wrong. “I feel terrible,” he explained. “I accidentally hit the Easter Bunny and killed it. There may not be an Easter because of me. What should I do?” The woman told the man not to worry. She knew exactly what to do. She went to her car trunk, and pulled out a spray can. She walked over to the limp, dead Bunny, and sprayed the entire contents of the can onto the furry little animal. Miraculously the Easter Bunny came back to life, jumped up, picked up the spilled eggs and candy, waved its paw at the two humans and hopped on down the road. 50 yards away the Easter Bunny stopped. turned around, waved and hopped on down the road another 50 yards, turned, waved, hopped another 50 yards and waved again! The man was astonished. He said to the woman, “What in heaven’s name is in your spray can? What was it that you sprayed on the Easter Bunny?” The woman turned the can around so that the man could read the label. It said, “Hair spray. Restores life to dead hair. Adds permanent wave.”

Easter Grace Blessing (a short prayer suitable to say before an Easter dinner

meal) May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with us this

day. May this meal be blessed as we gather to celebrate to-

gether. May your love be shared amongst us as we enjoy the

gift of fellowship. May we remember to give out the grace and forgiveness

that you have freely given us, And may we always give thanks for your sacrificial

love.

Amen.

New Parish App Coming Soon!

In the coming weeks St Anthony of Padua will launch our own app for iPhone and Android smart phones. This will allow us to better communicate with you throughout the week and keep you up-dated with relevant parish news or updates. The app is very well designed and very intuitive. It will be a great resource for parishioners by providing daily Mass readings, Catholic news and prayers, convenient prayer and Confession reminders, our bulletins and more. We hope for our new app to be a tool for fostering stronger parish life at St Anthony of Padua and better engaging the New Evangelization.

ACTS Retreat– Our Lady Queen of Peace and St. Anthony of Padua

This parish—based retreat offers the opportunity to renew your spirituality and prayer life, to strengthen your faith and its application in your daily life, and to build lasting friendships among members of the parish community. Your sister and brother parishioners help pre-sent the retreat with spiritual direction from our parish priest/deacons. We invite all the women and men of the parish to join us for a special weekend of spiritual growth and renewal.

...Take a leap of faith, put yourself in the hands of others, enjoy some qual-ity time away from your busy life, and embrace God’s journey for you. You’ll be glad you did!

What are people saying about ACTS?

✞ I was looking for a better community life centered around God. I think I found it!

✞ The retreat was very powerful for me. It has inspired me to have prayer time with Jesus before my busy day begins. I

look at the crosses in my life differently - almost embracing them instead of just dealing with them.

✞ God is amazing to open a new community and friendships, a touch of Heaven to me. God does amazingly more than

I could ever imagine.

✞ I’m closer to my husband, closer to God. I believe I am happier than I’ve been in a long time.
