Yoga asanas The Yogic physical

exercises are called Asanas, a term which means steady pose. This is because the Yoga Asana (or posture) is meant to be held for some time. However this is quite an advanced practice. Initially, our concern is simply to increase body flexibility.

The body is as young as it is flexible. Yoga exercises focus on the health of the spine, its strength and flexibility. The spinal column houses the all-important nervous system, the telegraphic system of the body. By maintaining the spine's flexibility and strength through exercise, circulation is increased and the nerves are ensured their supply of nutrients and oxygen.

The Asanas also affect the internal organs and the endocrine system (glands and hormones).

Pranayama Pranayamas are breathing

exercises developed by the ancient yogis for purification. Prana translates into “life force energy” and Yama translates into “control or mastery of.” Thus, Pranyama is used to control, cultivate, and modify the Prana in the body. Prana is taken in through the air we breathe, and since the pranayama exercises increase the amount of air we take in, they also increase our intake of Prana. There is no purificatory action greater than pranayama. Just as a goldsmith removes the impurities of gold by heating it in the hot furnace, by strongly blowing the blowpipe, so also the yogic aspirant removes the impurities of the body, the senses and the mind, by blowing the lungs, through the practices of pranayama. Thus Manu says: “Let the defects be burnt up by pranayama.”

Yoga recommends six purification processes to get and keep the equilibrium of these tridoshas. They are called as Shat kriyas (six purification cleansing processes).They are

1. Neti-Nasal cleansing.including jala neti and sutra neti.2. Dhauti-Cleaning of digestive tract, stomach.3. Nauli- Abdominal massage.4. Kaphalabhati-Purification of frontal lobes and lungs.5. Basti-Colon cleaning.6. Trataka-Blinkless gazing.
