Paterson youth football teams return Home from Virginia tournament

PATERSON — Late Sunday night, two busloads of 60 Paterson youngsters returned from a Thanksgiving weekend

trip that many of them won’t forget.

Three teams from the city’s Nifty Lions youth gridiron program had competed in the East Coast Youth Football

League tournament in Virginia Beach.

Each of the Paterson teams split its two games in the tournament and none of them qualified for the championship

games. But Nifty Lions organizer Anthony Carter said the trip was about more than simple who scored the most

touchdowns.

“We’re talking about inner city kids,” said Carter. “Some of them have never even been across the George

Washington Bridge. For them to see dolphins in the ocean and to touch horses was special.”

“Of course, I’d like to win a national championship, but to see the smiles on their faces, that was the win right

there,” Carter added.

Ten-year old fifth grader Demond Ward had been looking forward to staying in a hotel. “I like watching TV and

jumping on the beds,” he said. “It’s great that we get to go places and play other teams and travel.”

“The thing I like most about going to Virginia this year is hanging out with my teammates,” said Marquis Tudor, a

10-year old from Paterson’s Alexander Hamilton Academy. “They’re like brothers to me.”

The Paterson youths played squads from Florida, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Washington, D.C. Their

buses left Putnam Oval in Paterson late Thanksgiving night, just before midnight. Carter said they arrived in

Virginia Beach at 6:30 am and had their first game 2 p.m. that afternoon. The teams that qualified for the

tournament were in the eight-, 10- and 13-year-old age brackets.

Carter praised the coaches – Mike Cleaves for the eight-year-olds, Ron Cromartie for the 10s and Terence Palmer

for the 13s. Vernell Williams also helped run the Nifty Lion program, Carter said.

…CONTINUED

He arrived at Delaware after serving as defensive backs coach at East Stroudsburg (Pa.) in 2010 under Denny Douds, who had recently completed his 40th season as head coach at ESU in 2013. The Warriors allowed just 194.0 yards passing per game while registering a 130.5 defensive passing rating during the 2010 campaign.

Prior to his one-year stint at ESU, Baker served two seasons under head coach Ralph Friedgen at Maryland, which included the 2009 Rowdy Humanitarian Bowl championship team which finished with an 8-5 record. He was the interim inside linebackers coach for the Terrapins' bowl game and worked with the secondary, linebackers and special teams during his time in College Park.

A four-year letter winner and two-year starter at defensive back at Maryland from 1994-97, Baker earned his bachelor’s degree in sociology in 2003 and is pursuing a master’s degree in minority and urban education.

Baker previously served as Maryland's recruiting intern in 2001 and has high school coaching experience at Eastside High School in Paterson, N.J. (2003, 2005-06) and South Miami (Fla.) High School in 2007 before returning to his alma mater. His time at Eastside included an appearance in the New Jersey Group IV Section 1 state championship game.

Baker will serve in the Bill Walsh NFL Minority Coaching Fellowship with the Detroit Lions in August, 2015. The annual fellowship was launched in 1987 and is aimed to create more job opportunities for minority coaches.

Baker and his wife, Theresa, have a son, Khari, and daughters Kaila and Khloe.

Jimmy Salmon named Montclair Immaculate

boys basketball head coach

Jimmy Salmon, the long-time head coach and director of the N.J. Playaz AAU program, has been named the head coach at Montclair Immaculate, athletic director Ryan Horan told NJ Advance Media on Monday. Salmon, who previously coached at Paterson Catholic where he led the Cougars to the 1994 Tournament of Champions final, helped make the Playaz one of the predominant AAU programs not only in New Jersey, but nationally as well. He replaces Danny Grasso, who retired after 12 seasons at the helm in Montclair. "It's definitely very exciting," Horan said. "Someone with his experience and being well-known in the Northern Jersey basketball arena. I think it's exciting, for a school like Immaculate who hasn't really been on the map in recent years, to be known — to let people know that, we're here and we're alive." Salmon confirmed that he had taken the job when reached by phone on Monday but deferred comment to Horan. The hiring represents another step in a turnaround for the school, which nearly closed last summer to due to financial issues. This fall also marked the return of the school's football team to the varsity level. "His experience speaks for itself, but what he brings to our basketball problem is more than just basketball," Horan said. "He's bringing leadership to the basketball court, but he brings leadership to the young boys just in terms of being better students in the classroom, being better members of the community. So he's a huge asset to us, just in terms of our mission as a school and developing young student-athletes and people of character." The Lions are coming off a 5-16 season. They will be playing one of the toughest schedules in the state, featuring games against elite opponents such as Bergen Catholic, Roselle Catholic, Hudson Catholic and St. Joseph (Met.). Though Horan expects the team to be better than in recent years but said that success this season wouldn't be measured by just wins and losses. "I think we're just taking it day-by-day here and just trying to get better," Horan said. "We want the kids to be successful in the classroom and on the court and to have fun."

Kennedy’s new coach hoping for fresh start

PATERSON — Tommie Patterson followed his broken heart. As much as he enjoyed working and coaching boys basketball at Paterson Charter, if Patterson ever were to overcome the emotional trauma from the shooting death of his top player – 15-year-old freshman Armoni Sexton – he needed a fresh start. The former Kennedy standout always wanted to coach at his alma mater, which made the complicated move easier. “When the Kennedy thing came up, I wanted to get away from there because I hate thinking about what happened to Armoni,” Patterson said of Sexton, who died April 19, a day after the emerging star was shot in Paterson. “Going there every day, walking down certain hallways, I know I would see him in those same places where I would tell him, ‘Tuck your shirt in. Pull your pants up.’ “It brought back too many memories. It hurt, so I think leaving was the most therapeutic thing I did.” Patterson made his debut Friday night as Kennedy’s coach. The Knights, ranked No. 4 in The Record preseason Top 25, lost to No. 7 Don Bosco, 70-53, in Ramsey. Coaching Kennedy has been a “surreal” experience for Patterson, who coached at Paterson Catholic, Eastside and Clifton before building Paterson Charter from strictly a JV team into a complete program. It has helped having one of his closest friends, James Hargrove, as one of his assistant coaches. Hargrove and Patterson led Kennedy to back-to-back Passaic County titles during their junior and senior seasons in 1987 and 1988. Hargrove was an assistant on former coach Jim Ring’s staff as well. It wasn’t until Patterson and Ring, now an assistant at Ramapo, talked in person following a September fall-league game at Kennedy that Patterson’s anxiety subsided. “I was definitely relieved,” Patterson said. “I told him I love him and appreciate everything he has done for me. He played a major part in my life. I wouldn’t be who I am today without him being there for me.” Ring, a varsity assistant and freshman coach at Kennedy for 19 seasons before Collins died, coached Patterson and Hargrove. He considers Patterson — a determined forward who played much bigger than his 6-foot-2 frame — one of the two toughest players he coached in nearly four decades at the school. “I wish him all the luck in the world,” said Ring, who went 360-166 and won four Passaic County championships in 19 seasons as head coach. “He’s a perfect fit for the program.” Patterson’s players agree.

“He’s very demanding, and he’s another father figure – just like Coach Ring,” said senior guard Alphonso Gee, a four-year starter who joked about Patterson’s approach to practice. “But we run a lot. We run a lot. I mean, we run a lot.” Basketball aside, Ring is sympathetic to Patterson’s plight because he knows how close Patterson was to Sexton, who viewed Patterson as a father figure. “The kid’s basketball ability always spoke for itself,” Ring said. “But to get him to do the right thing off the court, that’s what made it special to Tommie. “For him to have to deal with this young man’s death and live through that, it’s heart-wrenching.” Teaneck coach Jerome Smart, another former Kennedy standout who’s very close to Patterson, encouraged his friend to take the Kennedy job because it was an opportunity that might not have presented itself again for a long time. “Paterson is a different kind of place, where being a part of the community, being a part of the legacy in Paterson, means a lot,” Smart said. “The city has always wanted Tommie to be the guy or Hargrove to be the guy after Ring. It’s a good thing for the city, and it’s a good thing for the kids. He has a connection to the community, the parents. He can do certain things that someone from outside the community couldn’t do. “I think him being a homeowner in the city, being invested in the community and a person who’s there day to day and wants to be there, it’s a good thing. I think he’s the right guy for the job. He’s been the right guy for the job for a while.”
