FOREWORDI looked around upon the world, and saw

that it was shadowed by sorrow and scorchedby the fierce fires of suffering. And I lookedfor the cause. I looked around, but could notfind it ; I looked in books, but could not findit ; I looked within, and found there both thecause and the self-made nature of that cause.I looked again, and deeper, and found theremedy. I found one Law, the Law of Loveone Life, the Life of adjustment to that Law;one Truth, the Truth of a conquered mind and aquiet and obedient heart. And I dreamed ofwriting a book which should help men andwomen, whether rich or poor, learned or un-learned, worldly or unworldly, to find withinthemselves the source of all success, all happiness, all accomplishment, all truth. And the dreamremained with me, and at last became substantialand now I send it forth into the world on itsmission of healing and blessedness, knowing thatit cannot fail to reach the homes and hearts ofthose who are waiting and ready to receive it.

THE LESSON OF EVILUnrest and pain and sorrow are the sh

of life. There is no heart in all the world tha$has not felt the sting of pain, no mind thatnot been tossed upon the dark waters of trouble,no eye that has not wept the hot, blinding tearsof unspeakable anguish. There is no house-hold where the Great Destroyers, disease andeath, have not entered, severing heart fromheart, and casting over all the dark pall ofsorrow. In the strong, and apparently inde-structible meshes of evil all are more or le:fast caught, and pain, unhappiness, and misfotune wait upon mankind. With the object of escaping, or in some w,-os..v,

If you are one of those who are praying for,and looking forward to, a happier world beyondthe grave, here is a message of gladness for you,you may enter into and realize that happy worldnow ; it fills the whole universe, and it is withinyou, waiting for you to find, acknowledge, andpossess. Said one who knew the inner laws ofBeing, When men shall say lo here, or lo there,go not after them ; the kingdom of God is withihyou. What you have to do is to believe this, simply believe it with a mind unshadowed bydoubt, and them meditate upon it till you under-stand it. You will then begin to purify and tobuild your inner world, and as you proceed, passing from revelation to revelation, from realiza-

THE WAY OUT OF UNDESIRABLECONDITIONSHaving seen and realized that evil is but assing shadow thrown, by the intercepting self,

across the transcendent Form of the EternalGood, and that the world is a mirror in whicheach sees a reflection of himself, we now ascend.^y firm and easy steps, to that plane of percep-tion whereon is seen and realized the Vision of

' e Law. With this realization comes theknowledge that everything is included in aceaseless interaction of cause and effect, and thatnothing can possibly be divorced from law.\From the most trivial thought, word, or act of

n, up to the groupings of the celestial bodies, reigns supreme. No arbitrary condition can,

en for one moment, exist, for such a conditionwould be a denial and an annihilation of law.Every condition of life is, therefore, bound up inan orderly and harmonious sequence, and thesecret and cause of every condition is containedwithin itself. The law, Whatsoever a mansows that shall he also reap, is inscribed in

/ gaming letters upon the portal of Eternity, andU 28

The Way Out of Undesirable Conditions 29none can deny it, none can cheat it, none canescape it. He who puts his hand in the firemust suffer the burning until such time as it hasworked itself out, and neither curses nor prayerscan avail to alter it. And precisely the samelaw governs the realm of mind. Hatred, anger, jealousy, envy, lust, covetousness, all these arefires which burn, and whoever even so much astouches them must suffer the torments of burn-ing. All these conditions of mind are rightlycalled evil, for they are the efforts of the soulto subvert, in its ignorance, the law, and they, therefore, lead to chaos and confusion within, andare sooner or later actualized in the outward cir-cumstances as disease, failure, and 'misfortune, coupled with grief, pain, and despair. Wheea$

v love, gentleness, goodwill, purity, are coolingairs which breathe peace upon the soul thatwooes them, and, being in harmony with theEternal Law, they become actualized in theform of health, peaceful surroundings, and unde-viating success and good fortunefNA thorough understanding of mis Great Lawwhich permeates the universe leads to the ac-quirement of that state of mind known as obedi-ence. To know that justice, harmony, and loveare supreme in the universe is likewise to knowthat all adverse ancTpainful conditions are theresult of ouT~6wn disobedience to^KaTXaw.

30 The Path of ProsperitySuch knowledge leads to strength and power, and it is upon such knowledge alone that a truelife and an enduring success and happiness canbe built. To be patient under all circumstances, and to accept all conditions as necessary factorsin your training, is to rise superior to all painfulconditions, and to overcome them with an over-coming which is sure, and which leaves no fearof their return, for by the power of obedience tolaw they are utterly slain. Such an obedientone is working in harmony with the law, has, infact, identified himself with the law, and whatso-ever he conquers he conquers forever; whatso-ever he builds can never be destroyed. The cause of all power, as of all weakness, iswithin: the secret of all happiness as of all

    misery is likewise within. There is no prog-ress apart from unfoldment within, and no surefoothold of prosperity or peace except by orderlyadvancement in knowledge.You say you are chained by circumstances ;

you cry out for better opportunities, for a widerscope, for improved physical conditions, and per-haps you inwardly curse the fate that binds youhand and foot. It is for you that I write; it isto you that I speak. Listen, and let my wordsburn themselves into your heart, for that which Isay to you is truth : You may bring about thatimproved condition in your outward life wKich

htilThe Way Out of Undesirable Conditions 3;There is positively no way of permanently

rising above poverty, or any undesirable con-dition, except by eradicating those selfish andnegative conditions within, of which these are thereflection, and by virtue of which they continue. The way to true riches is to enrich %e soul by ^the acquisition of virtue. That is the God state of con-sciousness ; it is the sanctuary of the Most High. When, by long strife and self-discipline, youhave succeeded in entering the door of that holyTemple, you will perceive, with unobstructedvision, the end and fruit of all human thoughtand endeavor, both good and evil. You willthen no longer relax your faith when you seethe immoral man accumulating outward riches, for you will know that he must come again topoverty and degradation. The rich man who isbarren of virtue is, in reality, poor, and as surelyas the waters of the river are drifting to theocean, so surely is he, in the midst of all hisriches, drifting towards poverty and misfortuneand though he die rich, yet must he return toreap the bitter fruit of all his immorality. Andthough he become rich many times, yet as manytimes must he be thrown back into poverty, until, by long experience and suffering he con-quers the poverty within. But the man who isoutwardly poor, yet rich in virtue, is truly rich, and, in the midst of all his poverty, he is surelytraveling towards prosperity ; and aboundingjoy and bliss await his coming.

If you would become truly and permanently7 prosperous, you must first become virtuous. It

is therefore unwise to aim directly at prosperity,to make it the one object of life, to reach out

The heart that truly desiresto do good does not wait for money before doingit, but comes to the altar of sacrifice, and, leav-ing there the unworthy elements of self, goesout and breathes upon neighbor and stranger, friend and enemy alike, the breath of blessed-ness.As the effect is related to the cause, so is pros-

he most powerful forces in the universe arethe silent forces ; and in accordance with the in-tensity of its power does a force become benefi-cent when rightly directed, and destructive whenw-fongly employed. This is common knowledgein regard to the mechanical forces, such as steam, electricity, etc., but few have yet learned to applythis knowledge to the realm of mind, where thethought-forces (most powerful of all) are contin-ually being generated and sent forth as currentsof salvation or destruction. At this stage of his evolution, man has entered

into the possession of these forces, and the wholetrend of his present advancement is their com-plete subjugation. All the wisdom possible toman on this material earth is to be found only incomplete self-mastery, and the command, Lovefour enemies, resolves itself into an exhortationo enter here and now, into the possession of thatsublime wisdom by taking hold of, mastering andtransmuting, those mind forces to which man is

The Silent Power of Thought 47now slavishly subject, and by which he is help-lessly borne, like a straw on the stream, upon thecurrents of selfishness. The Hebrew prophets, with their perfect knowl-

edge of the Supreme Law, always related out-ward events to inward thought, and associatednational disaster or success with the thoughts anddesires that dominated the nation at the time. The knowledge of the causal power of thought isthe basis of all their prophecies, as it is the basisof all real wisdom and power. National eventsare simply the working out of the psychic forcesof the nation. Wars, plagues, and famines arethe meeting and clashing of wrongly-directedthought-forces, the culminating points at whichdestruction steps in as the agent of the Law. Itis foolish to ascribe war to the influence of oneman, or to one body of men. It is the crowninghorror of national selfishness.

It is the silent and conquering thought-forceswhich bring all things into manifestation. Theuniverse grew out of thought. Matter in its lastanalysis is found to be merely obtectivizedthought. All man's accomplishments were firstwrought out in thought, and then objectivized. The author, the inventor, the architect, first buildsup his work in thought, and having perfected itin all its parts as a complete and harmoniouswhole upon the thought-plane, he then com-

It is from such states of mind that all weak-ness and failure proceed, for they represent theannulling and disintegrating of the positivethought-forces which would otherwise speedytheir object with power, and bring about theirown beneficent results. To overcome these negative conditions is toenter into a life of power, is to cease to beslave, and to become a master, and there is onbone way by which they can be overcome, ancthat is by steady and persistent growth in inwardknowledge. To mentally deny evil is not suffi-cient ; it must, by daily practice, be risen aboveand understood. To mentally affirm the good isinadequate ; it must, by unswerving endeavor,be entered into and comprehended. The intelligent practice of self-control, quickly

leads to a knowledge of one's interior thought-forces, and, later on, to the acquisition of thatpower by which they are rightly employed anddirected. In the measure that you master self, that you control your mental forces instead ofbeing controlled by them, in just such measurewill you master affairs and outward circumstances.Show me a man under whose touch everythingcrumbles away, and who cannot retain success

Such a man, being without faith andwithout self-government, is incapable of the rightgovernment of his affairs, and is a slave to cir-cumstances ; in reality a slave to himself. Suchare taught by affliction, and ultimately pass fromweakness to strength by the stress of bitter ex-perience.

Faith and purpose constitute the motive-powerof life. There is nothing that a strong faith andan unflinching purpose may not accomplish. Bythe daily exercise of silent faith, the thought-forces are gathered together, and by the dailystrengthening of silent purpose, those forces aredirected towards the object of accomplishment.Whatever your position in life may be, before

Those who have wandered from the highwayof righteousness guard themselves agains^cjSjJfpetition ; those who always pursue th^g^f*need not to trouble about such defense. /Thisno empty statement. There are men to-daywho, by the power of integrity and faith/%k^rfdefied all competition, and who, without sweing in the least from their methods, when com-peted with, have risen steadily into prosperity, whilst those who tried to undermine them havefallen back defeated. To possess those inward qualities which consti-

tute goodness is to be armored against all thepowers of evil, and to be doubly protected inevery time of trial ; and to build oneself up inthose qualities is to build up a success whichcannot be shaken, and to enter into a prosperitywhich will endure forever.

    88 The Path of Prosperity

The White Robe of the Heart InvisibleIs stained with sin and sorrow, grief and pain,

And all repentant pools and springs of prayerShall not avail to wash it white again.

While in the path of ignorance I walk,The stains of error will not cease to cling

Defilements mark the crooked path of self,Where anguish lurks and disappointments sting.owledge Ijtnd wisdom only can avail

*ft To purify and make my garment clean,For therein lie love's waters ; therein rests

Peace undisturbed, eternal, and serene.m ^n and repentance is the path of pain,Knowledge and wisdom is the path of Peace

By the near way of practice I will findWhere bliss begins, how pains and sorrows cease.

Self shall depart, and Truth shall take its place;hangeless One, the Indivisibleup his abode in me, and cleanse

hite Robe of the Heart Invisible.
