Pathway from successful Juniors to

successful Seniors

• Typical problems in performance development can usually be attributed to traditional/historical ways of thinking that are now out dated.

Page 4: Pathway from successful Juniors to successful Seniors · Pathway from successful Juniors to successful Seniors Agenda: Transitioning from Talented to Elite Athlete – long term model

Based on successful competitive achievements at both pupil and youth age groups,

above-average development is then forcast for the elite athlete/s.

The talent promotion system in Germany is based on the assumption that participation at

Junior World Championships is a mile stone developmental progression that will therefore

also be the bases for further funding and support services

Despite achieving long term development targets, there are still

many disagreements

Long term development & Career paths

(Similarities and Differences)

Late-Bloomers

Successful Juniors

Juliane Wulff, IAT

Page 16: Pathway from successful Juniors to successful Seniors · Pathway from successful Juniors to successful Seniors Agenda: Transitioning from Talented to Elite Athlete – long term model

Successful juniors reach the world top level 2-3 years earlier

than late bloomers. Top performances at an early stage do not

exclude success at elite level. (J. Wulff, 2014)

Conclusion…..

Page 17: Pathway from successful Juniors to successful Seniors · Pathway from successful Juniors to successful Seniors Agenda: Transitioning from Talented to Elite Athlete – long term model

Training programmes should focus on empowerment

through physical preparation rather than on

performance, only.

Conclusion…..

Page 18: Pathway from successful Juniors to successful Seniors · Pathway from successful Juniors to successful Seniors Agenda: Transitioning from Talented to Elite Athlete – long term model

• There is no direct relation between success at a young age and elite success in athletics.

• Youth success is rather an exception in the career of a world class athlete, but it does not exclude success at the elite level.

• Assessing a talent reaches beyond the analysis of competition performances.

• Promotion programmes for late bloomers and athletes from other sports have to complete the existing structure.

Conclusion…..

Page 19: Pathway from successful Juniors to successful Seniors · Pathway from successful Juniors to successful Seniors Agenda: Transitioning from Talented to Elite Athlete – long term model

• Starting monotonous training too early, leads to fatigue.

• Multiple experiences, made also in other sports, or alternative training sessions make a difference on a long-termin basis.

• Training in teams including playing games help create an attachment to the sport, this is the case for late bloomers, in particular.

Conclusion…..
