Summer seemed to fly by and it’s hard to believe it’s September already. I hope everyone had a good summer and was able to do some family research. I spent a week at “genealogy camp” attending the Genealogical Research Institute of Pittsburgh. I had a great time. This was my second year there and both years have provided wonderful learning experiences. This summer I took the Advanced Land Records course. We spent an entire lesson on Ohio because of its unique land divisions. I know from experience that land records can help solve tough genealogy problems and was sure the course would provide valuable information. I certainly wasn’t disappointed. The Butler County Records Center & Archives has had a lot of visitors from other states this summer. Everyone is impressed with the records available in Butler County. Most comment that they wish other areas had such a nice facility. Those of you who live at a distance can take advantage of their online record request by going to www.butlercountyohio.org/records/ then register and submit a request. These requests are answered by volunteer genealogists like myself, usually within a week. The only cost is for copies and postage. Copies are just 5 cents each, a real bargain. Of course, everything is not at the Records Center and the service is more a record retrieval rather than intensive research and analyzation, but it certainly is a great way to obtain a record you need. Summer seemed to fly by and it’s hard to believe it’s September already. I hope everyone had a good summer

and was able to do some family research. I spent a week at “genealogy camp” attending the Genealogical

Research Institute of Pittsburgh. I had a great time. This was my second year there and both years have

provided wonderful learning experiences. This summer I took the Advanced Land Records course. We spent

an entire lesson on Ohio because of its unique land divisions. I know from experience that land records can

help solve tough genealogy problems and was sure the course would provide valuable information. I certainly

wasn’t disappointed.

The Butler County Records Center & Archives has had a lot of visitors from other states this summer.

Everyone is impressed with the records available in Butler County. Most comment that they wish other areas

had such a nice facility. Those of you who live at a distance can take advantage of their online record request

by going to www.butlercountyohio.org/records/ then register and submit a request. These requests are

answered by volunteer genealogists like myself, usually within a week. The only cost is for copies and

postage. Copies are just 5 cents each, a real bargain. Of course, everything is not at the Records Center and the

service is more a record retrieval rather than intensive research and analyzation, but it certainly is a great way

to obtain a record you need.

Elk Creek Baptist Church Cemetery

Alternate Name: Pioneer Cemetery

Location: Section 6. South side of State Route 73, extending south to northwest side of Hamilton Avenue.

of the building. In 1931 church services were held for the last time. In 1948 St. John’s Cemetery Association was incor-

porated, and the church building was sold to the Church of the Nazarene in 1949.

1834 Butler County Property Reappraisals

James McBride came to Butler County from Pennsylvania in 1807. He became Sheriff at the age of 25 and later served as the Clerk of Courts. In 1834, McBride began a County-wide reappraisal of all property. It was this reappraisal which provided him the framework to draw the first plat maps (1836) that identified land owners for Butler County. Digital reproductions of the original reappraisal lists are available at www.butlercountyohio.org/records > Archives > McBride. The records include owner’s name, range, town, section, part of section or lot, number of acres, appraised value.

This is portion of a License and Permit Book found in the basement of the old court house in Butler County. The dates here are from 1805 to 1817. The R stands for Retail, the T for Tavern, the F for Ferry, and the Comm means the person was a commissioner of the county. Some people were enterprising and may have been a tavern owner and then expanded and got a retail or ferry license (and vice versa). If that's the case and the years are different, the first year corresponds to the first letter. And entry that has F/T

1805/1816 would mean the ferry license was taken in 1805 and the tavern in 1816. When given I added the township or city.
