Society of Periodontology, an elected member of the European Periodontal Society & a clinical course co-ordinator of continuing dental education in the Dublin Dental Hospital. I hold a part-time post in the Cleft Lip & Palate unit in St. James’ Hospital.

Dr. Rory Nolan BDentSc, MFD, DChDent (Perio), FFD RCSI, EFP I graduated from TCD in 2001 after which I worked in General Dental Practice in Ireland, England & Australia. Following this I worked as a SHO in Oral &

Maxillofacial Surgery in the UK for a number of years. I completed a doctorate in periodontology & implant dentistry at the Dublin Dental Hospital in 2009. I was awarded a Fellowship in Periodontology from RCSI & I am certiied by the European Federation of Periodontology.

1 . Wh a t i s per i o d o n t i c s?

Periodontics is the branch of dentistry concerned with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of gum (periodontal) disease, and the placement of dental implants (see separate lealet).

Periodontal diseases are serious bacterial infections that destroy the attachment ibres and supporting bone that hold your teeth in your mouth. Left untreated, these diseases can lead to tooth loss. Periodontal infection can affect your general health and hence it is important to control.

2 . H o w d o es g u m d i sea se o c c u r ?

Gum disease is caused by the bacteria in plaque, a sticky colourless ilm that constantly forms on your teeth. Regular brushing, lossing and hygienist treatment can remove this build up and prevent gum disease from progressing.

4 . Wh a t i s t r ea t m en t l i k e?

A full assessment will be carried out by one of our periodontists who will plan a course of treatment speciically tailored to your needs.

Treatment will depend on how far the inlammation has developed. Typically, you will undergo in-depth cleaning a treatment known as “root debridement”, which may require several appointments. As the crowns and roots of the teeth become clean, your gums will tighten up around root surfaces. Any loose teeth may also become irmer.

As periodontal disease is an infection by plaque bacteria and other microorganisms, treatment will typically involve the application of a topical anti-microbial drug (Dentomycin gel) directly into the gingival crevices & pockets.

In advanced cases, root debridement is not suficient to achieve optimal results. In this case, surgical treatment using growth factors (Emdogain®) and bone substitute (Geistlich Bio-Oss®) may be required.

5 . I s t r ea t m en t pa i n fu l ?

All procedures are completed under local anaesthetic or conscious sedation. There may be some post-operative discomfort which you will be advised how to manage by your speciic practitioner.

6 . H o w l o n g d o es i t ta k e?

This depends on the extent of the disease and your requirements. Typical cases last from 3 months to 1 year.

7 . H o w m u c h d o es i t c o st ?

We aim to offer all of our treatments at competitive prices. Periodontic treatment qualiies for 20% tax relief, which can be claimed with a Med 2 form at year end.

8 . H o w c a n I t a k e c a r e o f m y n ew sm i l e?

It is critical that throughout your treatment and following treatment that you maintain a high level of oral hygiene. You can do this by:

Regular brushing—recommended 3 times/day Using luoride mouth wash daily Using inter-dental brushes daily Eating plenty of fruit & maintaining a healthy low-sugar diet i.e. avoiding sticky toffee, sweets, biscuits, chewing gum, izzy drinks etc. Visiting your dentist regularly

Your new smile will enhance your appearance, increase your conidence and improve your dentition. Please look after your new smile as a lack of conscientious care can lead to staining, decay, gum problems and many more complications.
