a Haggerty Museum of Art Marquette University Spring 2001, vol. 15, no. 1 RUSSIAN IMPERIAL PORCELAIN IN HAGGERTY EXHBITION Extravagant examples of Russian porcelain pieces will grace the Haggerty Museum galleries when At the Tsar’s Table: Russian Imperial Porcelain from the Raymond F. Piper Collection opens on Friday, June 1. The opening lecture will be given by Dr. Wendy Salmond, associate profes- sor of art, Chapman University, Orange, California at 6 p.m. in Cudahy Hall 001 followed by a recep- tion at the Museum from 7 to 9 p.m. The porcelain in the exhibition comes from the Imperial Porcelain Factory in St. Petersburg, Russia, and the Gardner Factory in the village of Verbilki. The exhibition traces the development of Russian Imperial porcelain from the reign of Empress Elizabeth I, daughter of Peter the Great, to the reign of Tsar Nicholas II, which ended in 1917. First brought to Europe by Marco Polo from China, the secret of manufacturing porcelain remained unsolved until 1740 when a young Russian metallurgist named Vinogradov was sent to Germany to study. The Nevskaya Porcelain Factory was founded in 1744 and is still in operation today as the Lomonosov Porcelain Factory. The primary business of the porcelain factories was to supply the royal courts with table services and decorative pieces for elaborate state banquets. Plates, tea services, presentation Easter eggs, chargers and compotes will be fea- tured in the exhibition. Related materials such as portraits and artifacts from the royal families, menus from imperial banquets, and the wooden storage case for the Raphael service will also be displayed. The exhibition catalogue will feature essays by Anne Odom and Elizabeth Krizenesky. Odom is deputy director for collections and chief curator at Hillwood Museum and Gardens in Washington, D.C. Krisensky, an instuctor in Russian at Lawrence University, will focus on Russian banqueting The exhibition closes on September 2. RAYMOND F. PIPER, MASTER COLLECTOR An interest in Russian history and architecture led Raymond F. Piper to begin collecting Russian porcelain and now he has one of the most comprehen- sive private collections of Imperial Russian porcelain. A graduate of St. Norbert’s College, DePere, in 1957, Piper spent three years serving in the U.S. Navy as an officer before coming to Marquette University for one year to earn a teaching certificate followed by a M.A. degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University. He taught English at Sheboygan Falls High School until his retirement and now lives in Plymouth, Wisconsin. In 1975 he made his first purchase of Imperial Russian porcelain from a Milwaukee dealer which inspired him to learn more about the imperial factory. A trip to the Hillwood Museum and Gardens in Washington, D.C., which has the finest institutional collection of Russian porcelain in the United States, aroused his interest and he read exten- sively about the collection. His collection of over 400 pieces includes banquet services, personal and presentation pieces created during the Russian imperial period and two dozen porcelain Easter eggs. The exhibition closes on Sunday, July 8.

GERMAN AVANT-GARDE MUSICIANS PERFORMA performance of electric accordion and bass music by German musicians

Sven Hermann and Matthias Hettmer of Interzone perceptible will follow theHeimo Wallner gallery talk. The musicians perform a combination of com-posed and improvisational music. Their performance at the Haggerty willinclude compositions by Volker Heyn, Manuel Hildago, Kudzu Shim, andAlvar Carlevar. The name, Interzone perceptible comes from “Interzone,” thefictional locale in William S. Burrough’s book Naked Lunch where the linesbetween fiction and reality are blurred.

The aura of the Brandywine Valley in Pennsylvania and Delaware will per-meate the galleries of the Haggerty Museum when George Weymouth:Portraits and Landscapes of Brandywine opens on Thursday, July 19 and con-tinues until Sunday, September 30. The opening lecture will be given by theartist George Weymouth, known for his landscapes and portraits, at 6 p.m. inCudahy Hall 001. A reception from 7 to 9 p.m. will follow at the Museum.

Weymouth’s landscape paintings, inspired by his love of the BrandywineValley, are romantic and interpretive and reveal his attachment to the land. Hehas painted landscapes since childhood and his concern for the disappearanceof the countryside led him along with other concerned citizens to form theBrandywine Conservancy and environmental and cultural organization, in1967. Andrew Wyeth, the celebrated Chadds Ford artist whom Weymouthmet when he was 14, encouraged him to focus his paintings in theBrandywine Valley and had the most influence on this style.

The artist’s empathy with people can be felt in his portraits done in eggtempera, which subtly depict the subject’s character and personality. He firststarted painting portraits in 1958 with a painting of his grandfather, thebeginning of an astonishing collection of portraits of people from every walkof life. Each emphasizes the person’s worth and includes visual clues to theirrole in society.

Weymouth was born in 1936 in Wilmington, Delaware and has paintedsince early childhood, encouraged by his mother who was a gifted artist. Hereceived his Bachelor of Arts degree from Yale University in 1958. Beforereturning to his home and studio, The Big Bend in Brandywine, he studiedfor four years with Deane Keller, Yale University's official portrait painter.

Weymouth was one of the artists selected by NASA to paint at CapeKennedy during the moon shots. These paintings were then exhibited at theNational Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C.

The current Italian Renaissance Mastersexhibition represents a cooperative effort onmany levels including curatorial, the loan of artworks, gallery installation, promotion, publish-ing, transport, guest speakers, and related edu-cational programs. Without the necessary fund-ing, however, none of these efforts could takeplace.

How does one find support for such anexhibition? In this instance, there was no singlemajor sponsor. Rather, the exhibition was fund-ed from a variety of sources. The initial fundingwas income from the Marquette UniversityWomen’s Council Fund in Memory of John P.Raynor, S.J., former president of MarquetteUniversity. Income from endowment fundsrestricted by the donor to fund exhibitions andeducational programs of the Museum are animportant source for on-going exhibition sup-port. The Italian Community Center ofMilwaukee contributed their support in recog-nition of the Museum’s contribution toMilwaukee’s celebration of Italian culture as apart of the Milwaukee International ArtsFestival 2001. The Mellon Fund for theadvancement of undergraduate education atMarquette provided support for the education-al programs. Additional support came from theWisconsin Arts Board, the WisconsinHumanities Council, the National Endowmentfor the Humanities, and the Samuel H. KressFoundation.

These sources provided the funding fordirect costs of the exhibition such as the cata-logue, speakers, shipping, and installationexpenses. Of course there is the additional sup-port for the staff and facilities necessary to pre-sent the exhibition which represent the mem-berships and contributions of the HaggertyFriends as well as the support provided byMarquette University. Funding an exhibition isthus a collaborative effort requiring the com-bined support of many.

DR. ANNEMARIE SAWKINS EXPLAINS THE ROLE OF A CURATORWhen the exhibition At The Tsar’s

Table: Russian Imperial Porcelain fromthe Raymond F. Piper Collection opensat the Haggerty Museum on June 1, itscurator, Dr. Annemarie Sawkins will becompleting her second year as associatecurator of the Museum. The porcelaincollection is the second major exhibitionthat she has curated. The ItalianRenaissance Masters exhibition, whichcloses on May 20, was the first.

Prior to joining the Haggerty staff, she assisted in research, writing and pro-duction at the Milwaukee Art Museumand was an adjunct professor of art his-tory at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and instructor at McGillUniversity in Montreal. Dr. Sawkins, who earned her undergraduate degree atColgate University, Hamilton, NewYork, and holds masters and doctoratedegrees from McGill University, explained the steps involved in curatingan exhibition. The planning of amajor exhibition begins at least a year inadvance with the development of atheme. The focus of an exhibit may beon a specific artist, period, style, medi-um, theme or combination of theseideas. The Italian Renaissance exhibitioncombined art from the permanent col-lection with loans from nineteen differ-ent institutions including universitymuseums, public museums, private gal-leries and independent collectors. Bycontrast, the porcelain exhibition fea-tures Russian imperial rulers’ servicefrom 1744 to 1917 from a single collec-tion.

Once the parameters of an exhibi-tion have been decided, the curatorwrites an exhibition proposal and begins

contacting museum curators and dealersto discuss the possibilities of their lend-ing to the exhibit. A formal request forspecific works is sent with the exhibitionproposal to museum directors, galleryowners or individual collectors.

Then the registrar James Kieselburgat the Haggerty, arranges the loan con-tracts, shipping, and insurance. TheMuseum is responsible for the costs ofshipping, packing and insurance, although the art is usually lent free ofcharge between museums and dealers.Further research and contacting ofspeakers and catalogue essayists contin-ues simultaneously while shippingarrangements are being finalized.

As the exhibition date draws nearAndrew Nordin, the Haggerty prepara-tor, prepares a scale model of the gal-leries and Jerry Fortier, assistant curator, scans the images onto the computer forthe catalogue and publicity.

At this point Dr. Carter, theHaggerty director, and Dr. Sawkinsarrange the placement of the art byusing the scale model. Prior to the rota-

tion period, when the art from the pre-vious exhibition is removed, the wallsare repaired, repainted and often movedto be ready for the new exhibition. Finally the art is brought up from thestorage area, placed on pads against thewalls where the work is to be hung.

Dr. Sawkins emphasized that it’simportant for a curator not to becometoo focussed on one exhibition becausethere’s always a timetable involvingfuture exhibitions. "You must learn tojuggle multiple tasks," she commented.

She particularly enjoys working atthe Haggerty because of the collegialstaff and the variety of art on view at theMuseum.

Associate curator Annemarie Sawkins and preparatorAndrew Nordin examine a layout of the Italian RenaissanceMasters exhibition on a scale model of the Museum gallery.
