My elbows and knees carry the scars o

sixteen years o childs play. My colorblind

eyes search aces and environments, but can

scarcely see their own color. My callused

hands grasp hold a pen or a book, but my

mind cannot understand the hugeness o the

universe around it. Pain fashes, now and

again, just below the surace o the waters

o my heada amiliar, despised sign o an

oncoming migraine. And despite all this, I

still have the nerve to ask one simple question

    o mysel:

    What Am I?

Situated in the middle oOtter Creek Recreational Area,Camp Piomingo is by no meanscity living. Campers live incabins during their stay, and-depending on the program-spend various amounts o timeoutdoors.

    Ive always been an

outdoorsy person, and campgives me the opportunity toshow that side o me, Patricksaid. I really loved backpackingor the weekend and constantlyhaving a re going. It smells sogood and I immediately miss it

    when I get home.

Te woods is the best aspect o it. No wireless, no cell phnothing to distract you. Just being outside or that long isantastic. -Ryan Simpson, Counselor

Many o Patricks riends that have been going to camp w

or years have decided to end their Piomingo career. Amonare campers Matt Martin, Jacob Linde and Richard Stottm

with counselors Grant Snowden and Andrew Spalding.I wont be going back next year, Matt Martin said. I e

Ive already learned all there is to learn rom camp. I alreadthough that not going back will be something I regret or tmy lie. [Note: Matt doesnt always say the brightest thing

Ater ten weeks over ve summers

    o attending YMCA Camp Piomingo

in Meade County, KY, Patrick Haertel

excitedly awaits his nal summer as a

camper. Tis coming summer will be

Patricks CI Summer, a time in anyPiomingo anatics lie that they never

    orget.

Te term CI Summer reers to

the our weeks in which a Counselor-

    In-raining spends learning to work

with kids, lead camp activities, tell

camps many horric ghost stories and

    sing ridiculous songs. More important

    is the bonding participants experience

with other campers and counselors, not

to mention the comradery they have

    already developed with other campers

    who return year ater year.

No matter how you approach it, you

    will remember that summer orever,

Ryan Simpson, a new counselor at

Piomingo said. Tere is probably a

100% chance that being a CI at camp

will change you. It will make you a man.

For me, it was a right o passage.

Spending time in the woods with

other people whom youve oten never

met beore is a great way to make

riends and learn to cooperate withother people, Patrick said. Its also an

amazing way to learn about yoursel. You

learn your strengths and weaknesses and

you end up improving yoursel when its

    all said and done.

Among the things Patrick has learned

while spending time at Piomingo is

his joy o working with kids. While he

initially had doubts about the kids liking

him, Patrick soon ound that he actually

enjoyed working with them. Tis past

summer I hung out with a younger

    camper named rey Ashley, Patrick

said. It turned out that I actually ended

up learning a lot rom him. Little kids

have a completely diferent view o the

    world.

Created in 1938, Piomingo has a

rich history and maintains an American

    Indian theme, with campres, war

    paint and ceremonial dress having

an integral place in camp history and

ceremony. Tis can be at least partially

attributed to Injun Joe Friday, an earlycounselor who was an Algonquin Indian.

Joe Friday also helped orm the YMCAs

    Indian Guides Program.

Piomingos history is ull o legend

and myth, but many ormer counselors

remember their glory days a little

diferently. It could get pretty crazy,

Spencer Martin, Sr., a counselor in the

    mid-1980s remembered. We used to

borrow horses rom the barn and ride

around camp. One time we shot arrows

into the side o a counselor cabin and

scared the [heck] out o them.

I never shut up about camp. People

must think Im nuts, but they just dont

    understand. Piomingo is my home,

    Patrick said.

Te diversity o soccer players andsoccers reputation as an internationalsport brings with it a multiculturalexperience that many people inthe U.S. never experience. Patrickswitched to LSA 95A, which had ourKenyan players who moved to the

U.S. through reugee programs.Over the years, Patrick hasdeveloped riendships with teammatesand coaches rom ar-o places likeSenegal, Kenya, Bosnia, Iran andIraq. On the feld, many o t heseplayers are talented rom spendingtheir childhood with nothing to dobut play soccer. My dad grew upin Iran, Kayvon Ghayoumi said. When they had a soccer ball, theyplayed soccer. When they had a tennisball, they used it as a soccer ball.

When they had only rags, they kickedrags into garbage can goals.

Kayvons dad, Mehdi Ghayoumi, coached Patrick in the past. I reallyliked playing or Mehdi. Only

very rarely did I have any troubleunderstanding him or anything, and Igot to be close riends with Kayvon,

Patrick said. Going over to theirhouse taught me a lot about Iranianculture.

LSA 95As our Kenyan players areoster children here in the UnitedStates. All have dierent backgrounds, but none o them are particularly

happy. Abas Isgowe, a midfelder, lostboth o his parents to civil unrest inKenya when he was a young child. Heand the other children ended up ina reugee camp where the only oodthey got was rom the UN.

When I graduate high school, Iwant to go back to Kenya. We didnthave to go to school. We could runree on the streets, Hussein Darbanesaid. I want to go back and starta shop. Or maybe Ill buy a movietheatre and run it. Id like that.

When asked about the violence inKenya, Hussein shrugged. Tere wasalways an element o violence. Yougot used to it, he said. Usually it

was just kids fghting. We always usedto fght Sudanese kids in the reugeecamp a lot. Tey were everywhere and

    we hated them.

Patricks frst club coachBasse at United 1996 FC,and raised in Senegal and three proessional clubs thused to like to yell No gragrapes! reerring to how wup, Patrick said. Althou

Switching to a new team isntalways easy, as Patrick knows well.Patrick switched to LSA 95A dueto the dissolution o his previousteam, and it took some time toget used to playing with his newteammates. People have theirquirks and problems, and it takes

time to get used to them andlearn how to work with them,Patrick said. It seems like thisalways happens. Guys can be

jerks, and you really have to carveout your spot on the team beoreyou get any respect. Maybe its

    just me.

Sports come with injuries, and soccer is no exception. Patrick hassprained his let ankle three times and had innumerable other smallinjuries like bruises and scrapes rom playing soccer. You should seehow many scars I have on my legs. Ive got so many scars that my scarsare scarred, Patrick said. My ankles? Teyre giant scars. People arent

very careul about kicking you. Soccer isnt or sissies.

It aint easy being greenor being asoccer player. For a ew months everyyear, soccer takes up all my time. Impretty sure my riends orget who I am,

Patrick said. In addition to soccer, Patrickmust complete schoolwork, likes to hangout with riends and, o course, sendeighty million text messages a day.

Patrick is the third generation o soccerplayers in his dads side o the amily. Hisgreat-grandather played soccer on a clubteam in Germany ater World War One.

When Germany was ordered to disperse itsarmy, Patricks great-grandathers unit stuck

together as a semi-proessional soccer team. When Patricks dad visited Germany as ateenager, his grandather instilled a love osoccer in him and sent him to a boys soccercamp. He then passed on his love o thegame to Patrick.

A glimmer o interest inphotography had always hid

in the back o Patrick Haertelsmind, but he never thoughtmuch about it. I guess someo it was my colorblindnessand some o it was my lack oartistic prowess, Patrick said. And, o course, it really isnt acheap hobby.

Te longer he stayed inCMA, the more he realized heactually was very interested init. I mowed a lot o yards lastsummer, and it paid o. NowI have my own camera and Im

working on lenses, Patricksaid. Ive actually earnedthe money or every pieceo photographic equipmentI own, be it through lawnmowing, reereeing or workingor my dad.

A lot o people have helped

Patrick with photography, but none more so than

Seth Fischer. I wanted tohelp Patrick out because Ithought he had an interest inphotography and I recognizedhim rom the Brown School,Seth said. I elt a sort oconnection with him because

we went to middle schooltogether, and I wanted to teachanother photographer thethings that I know so he cancontinue to pass it on to utureyearbook photographers.

Seth has taught me a lot, especially about equipment andhow to learn photography oryoursel. He really knows whathes talking about, and Im sureId have handed over lots omoney or things I didnt needhad he not been around tohelp me, Patrick said. Id go

as ar as saying hes mentoredme. Every new photographer

should have a mentor.Patrick has also learned a

lot on his own. He practicedat Farmington Historic Home(which is near his house,)around his neighborhood, atmultiple parks and in multiplecities. He also shot the PegasusParade and the Balloon Glow, and has taken pictures oconcerts o live local bands likeBeady and Tink Harder.

I really like naturephotography, but Im stilltrying to gure out how tomake it all look good. Anyonecan take a picture o a duck, but only some people can makeit a good picture o a duck,Patrick said. Tats what Ihave to gure out how to do. Ilike ducks.
