    WHO IS THIS MAN?

  • THE SPACE RACE!

Vostok launched several precursor uncrewed missions between May 1960

and March 1961, to test and develop the Vostok rocket family and space

capsule. These missions had varied degrees of success, but the final two—

    Korabl-Sputnik 4 and Korabl-Sputnik 5—were complete successes, allowing

    the first crewed flight.

The Space Race between the Soviet Union and the United States, the

two Cold War superpowers, began just before the Soviet Union launched

the world's first artificial satellite, Sputnik 1, in 1957. Both countries

wanted to develop spaceflight technology quickly, particularly by

launching the first successful human spaceflight. The Soviet Union

secretly pursued the Vostok programme in competition with the United

    States' Project Mercury.

YURI GAGARIN:THE FIRST HUMAN TO JOURNEY

    INTO SPACE!

After returning from his space flight, Yuri Gagarin said two quotes that relate to today, the first being:

“Orbiting Earth in the spaceship, I saw how beautiful our planet is. People, let us preserve and increase this beauty, not destroy it!”

    • How can we look after our planet?

    The second quote is this:

“Looking at the earth from afar you realize it is too small for

conflict and just big enough for co-operation.”

What Is your understanding of this quote and why did it

relate back in the 60s and how does it relate to now?

YURI GAGARIN:THE FIRST HUMAN TO JOURNEY

    INTO SPACE!

    Quote

“When they saw me in my space suit and the parachute dragging alongside as I walked, they started to back away in fear. I told them, don't be afraid, I am a Soviet like you, who has descended from space and I must find a telephone to call Moscow!”

Why might the two farm workers have been frightened of Yuri when he walked

    towards them?

Safe Landing When Yuri Gagarin orbited the Earth on 12 April 1961, the plan had never

been for him to land inside his Vostok spacecraft. His spherical reentry

capsule came through the Earth’s atmosphere on a ballistic trajectory. Soviet

engineers had not yet perfected a braking system that would slow the craft

sufficiently for a human to survive impact. They decided to eject the

cosmonaut from his craft. Yuri Gagarin ejected at 20,000 feet and landed

safely on Earth using his parachute. Two farm workers who saw him land were

terrified when they saw him walking towards them.

People wanted to interview Yuri and ask him questions on television. Yuri travelled to different countries talking about the Soviet Space Programme.

What questions do you think they wanted to ask?

be Tatiana, the other mental patients wondered if she was actually Grand

Duchess Anastasia. The mysterious young woman did not discourage their

assumptions, she was know as Anna Anderson.

The reign of the Romanov family ended in diametric contract to the pastel

world of palaces and finery it had spent 300 years ruling. During the Russian

Revolution, the imperial family’s house arrest in Siberia ended when a firing

squad shot the Tsar Nicholas, Tsarina Alexandra, Grand Duke Alexei, and

Grand Duchesses Olga, Tatiana, Maria, and Anastasia to death on July 17,

    1918.

    #1 Facts About Anastasia

Anastasia’s brother, Alexei suffered from a disease called hemophilia

which stops the blood from clotting. If he cut or bruised himself, he could

bleed to death. The Russian people did not know that Alexei was sick.

Anastasia's mother was desperate to find some way to cure her son. She

heard that a Holy man called Rasputin could help and contacted him.

Rasputin did not act like a Holy man; he was often drunk. The Russian

people were suspicious of Alexandra's involvement with Rasputin. A

group of Russians who were critical of the Royal family decided to kill

Rasputin. They poisoned him, shot him then tied him up and threw him in

    the river.

    #1 Facts About Anastasia

In 1917 there were riots in Petrograd and Moscow. Nicholas was forced

to abdicate (give up the throne). Anastasia and her family were taken

prisoner. Anastasia and her family were later moved to Siberia where the

bathroom. On July 16 1918 the family were woken up and taken to a

cellar. They were arranged into a group and believed they were to be

photographed. Suddenly armed men burst into the room and began

firing. Anastasia's parents and her sister, Olga, their doctor (Dr. Botkin)

and two servants died instantly. The family's diamonds had been sewn

into the girl's dresses and the bullets bounced off these around the room.

The soldiers were amazed at this 'miracle' but kept on firing. It was

chaotic inside the cellar. The room was filled with smoke. Tatiana and

    Maria eventually died.

  • THE STORY OF ANASTASIA ROMANOV! - MURDER MYSTERY CASE

#5 Russian Mystery Is Finally UnravelledOne of the great mysteries of the 20th century has been solved after nearly 90 years.

In 1918, revolutionaries brutally murdered the last Russian czar and his family. But the remains of one daughter, thought to be Anastasia, and his

only son, Alexei, were never found. The mystery fed countless legends, impostors and Hollywood films. Now after years of searching, the puzzle

has finally been solved by amateurs. The Romanovs were the most beautiful and privileged family on the globe. But during the Russian

Revolution, the daughters -- Olga, Tatiana, Maria and Anastasia -- and one boy, Aleksei, were killed by the Bolsheviks, along with their mother and

father, Czar Nicholas II. On July 17, 1918, the family was lined up in the basement as if posing for a photo and then were shot and stabbed. It was

a grisly and chaotic scene by all accounts, with bullets bouncing off the women because they had their corsets lined with jewellery.

The Great MysteryThe killers mutilated and burned the bodies so they couldn't be identified and then buried them in a wooded area. Because the bodies couldn't

be found, speculation continued that some family members may have survived. For years, people all over the world claimed to be a Romanov

survivor, most famously a woman named Anna Anderson, who went to her death insisting that she was the real Anastasia, who was 17 in 1918,

despite DNA evidence to the contrary. When the remains of the Romanovs were found and exhumed in 1991, the mystery only intensified. The

bodies of one of the daughters and son Alexei, 13, were missing. The mystery, however, seems to have finally been unravelled. A group of

amateur sleuths pored over documented archives of the murders. One of the main killers, Yakov Yurovsky, said he had buried two corpses

separately from the other nine bodies. People had searched near the area where the bodies were initially dug up, but found nothing. The sleuths

focused on a Russian phrase Yurovsky used -- "tut zhe," which can mean "nearby." They figured out that this meant the graves were in the general

area of the first. Below a cover of trees, they did what so many before them could not -- they found the final two Romanov bodies, believed to be

Prince Alexei and his sister Maria, who was 19 at the time of the murders. Now the two bodies have been removed from the site for DNA testing.

Hardly a romantic ending for a story that has blossomed in the public's imagination for years, but still the end of chapter from long ago.

    MATRYOSHKA DOLLS

    TASK!

    Design your own

    Matryoshka Dolls

    – you can use any

    theme you want!

SUMBOLIC MEANING • Matryoshka is made by different dolls. The biggest doll is called “mother”, the smallest

    one is called seed.

    • Originally, the biggest doll represents a strong female matriarch who is the main

symbol of the Russian family. In itself, the doll fits inside little dolls which represent

    daughters and sons.

    • For this reason, Matryoshka represents fertility and motherhood.

    • The Matryoshka is also the symbol of Russia: the big doll represents Russia mother, and

in itself she hosts children, women, men, but also feelings like pain, happiness, joy. It is

a mother who can host all these things.

    • Matryoshka can represent also our life: we are like a big doll with other dolls inside

which represent our stories, relationships, experiences. We are one person with

different experiences. The seed represents our soul which is innocent and it is the real

    essence of ourselves.

The first Matryoshka was designed in 1892 by Vasilij Petrovič

Zvézdočkin, a craftsman of the “Childhood studio”, created by

Savva Ivanovič Mamontov (1841-1918), a famous collector. Mr

Zvézdočkin created a doll with round in shape and decoratively

painted to resemble a pretty young faced peasant woman

dressed or bundled up in an extravagant Sarafan costume, a

loose fitting traditional Russian garment. The original

Matryoshka was a set of dolls which represent: a big mother,

five peasants, a Russian boy, and a baby.
