Tell us a little about yourself. Getting started for you interest in photogra-phy? How do you become a photographer?

Photography started as a hobby when I was on maternity leave in 2006. I had come across a portrait online that I really liked, and everything moved along from there. In 2007 it became my career.

I L O V E S H O O T I N G I N S T U D I OI LOVE LIGHTING A SUBJECT AND HAVING COMLETE CONTROL IN THAT AREA

Who do you first show your pictures? My boyfriend. I always show him my new work before I release it.

How do you refer to the criticism? And if you self-critical?I am extremely self-critical, but I am very open to opinions. I listen to everything, but not necessarily agree with everything. Do you trust the opinion of friends when they view your pho-tos?I actually don’t have a lot of artistic friends so I show my work to my boyfriend. His opinion is the one that matters to me. Now it’s studio, how many people involved in it?The makeup artist, the model, and myself. I prefer small teams

As a separate task within the team? Is it easy to manage it?It’s much easier to work in a small team. My MUA is a good friend of mine and she knows how I like to work. I like shoots to be prop-erly planned out, and I like to work quickly. What is your source of inspiration? These days paintings give me most of my inspiration. Other things are movies and music. Your work is no longer a classical photo, but still not digital art. It lies somewhere between. It’s amazing. How did you come to such a picture?I love creating interesting imagery. My composition, lighting and retouching techniques get it there. How much time do you spend for photo editing? It depends. As the years go by I spend less and less time on re-touching work. I would say that it can take 10 minutes to 2 hours maximum to retouch a photo. 2 hours because sometimes I just stare at a photo, and it takes time to figure out what about it is bothering me. Sometimes I have to walk away and come back to it later. Treat it like a painting.

11

Page 12: Pattern Magazine №3

Some photographers, like photos taken by them a couple of days, and then find flaws in them. How long do they like you, after you’ve finished them?I usually like my photos for about 4 days, then I see a million things wrong with them. There are a few that I am 100% happy with. Have you participated in any exhibitions? Or, perhaps, themselves orga-nized?I have had two exhibitions. One was for my paintings about 8 years ago, and the other was for my photography in 2009.

Where do you most like to shoot - in studio or plainer?I love shooting in studio, I love lighting a subject and having complete con-trol in that area, but if I am in the studio too long I go mad and have to get out and get some background scenery.

What are your next professional goals, creative plans?I am working with more fashion magazines now so my work is currently go-ing in that direction, but I have many ideas that are waiting to be created.

Give advice to new photographers?Always practice, always look at imagery whether it’s online or in a book. Don’t splurge on gear, you don’t need the best camera or the best lens out there to make amazing images. Take inspiration from other artists, but never copy.

Tell us a little about yourself. From what you strat? How do you become a photographer?I am 42 years old and happily married for 12 years now. As a teenager i discovered my interest in foto, film and advertisement. My first SLR-Camera was a present to my 16th birthday. A Canon AL-1.Back then i took pictures of animals, plants and landscapes.I was too shy to ask for a person to pose in front of my camera.Later on i choose to become a mediadesigner and worked for an event agency and several media companies in germany. My way went from tv- and filmpostproduction to webdesign. That was in 1995. At that time i had my my first contact with photoshop (version 3.5.1) and apple computers. Digital photography for me started in 2004.My wife an i love to travel and so i made a lot of landscape andpanoramapictures.Several years later i showed my pictures to a skilled photographer. He was very kind in his judgement, but asked me: „Where are the people in your pictures? I cannot see any.“ That marked the beginning of my people photography. In autumn 2009 my niece had the questionable pleasure to be the first model in front of my camera. The first 20 shootings took place in my living room.At the end of 2010 i choose to start my own business and became a freelance photographer.

A time when you started. On the set i am a teamworker. Therefore i regularly show the images to the model and the makeupartist. 4 or 6 eyes see more than 2. It’s important for me to create an climate where everyone of my team has the feeling to participate in the creative process. In the postproduction i am on my own. Sometimes my wife is the first to see the final images, sometimes a respected colleage gets to see my work first. Skype,Mail and even the facebook chat are quite useful in these cases.

What about criticism? And if you self-critical?Constructional criticism is very important to me.I still have a lot to learn and i need to improve.I am very self-critical and rarely satisfied with my work.

17

Page 18: Pattern Magazine №3

There is a small group of people i trust. They know me and i know them quit-engood. Beyond that i am open and thankful for the feedback i receive from several nwell-respected persons.

Do you have a team at present time? In most cases it’s just me and the model.Whenever it’s possible, meaningful and affordable a makeup artist joins theteam. Furthermore i organised some projects in cooperation with other photographers. But that’s a very sensitive and daring business. Some projects went well, some don’t. Inspiration. What is your source?Inspiration cames from several directions:From the movies, a song or from a journey.Sometimes it’s a coincidence. For example when i was lucky to meet Dominique (German Playboy 03/2011) in May 2011. Or when i met Russell James and Erin Heatherton for an interview in Berlin in April 2011. That was pure inspirataion! What kind of photo may be called – yours?Hopefully a photo that worships feminine beauty and elegance.Maybe a picture that lives through it’s colors and contrasts.

How much time do you spend for photo editing?Too much regarding the hours, too little regarding the output. How long do like you ypur photos, after you’ve finished them?Often i finish my retouch work in the early evening. When i am happy with the result that feeling lasts for the evening. On the next day i study the feedback and move on to the next image or task. That may sound superficial or arrogant or strange, but as a professional pho-tographer i have to stay in contact with my clients, organise upcoming projects and so on. There is little time to rest in this business. On the other hand i reflect a lot after the shooting. What was good? What went wrong? What has to be improved next time.

Where do you most like to shoot - in studio or plainer?I have no fondness. But because of my small studioappartment i am often forced to go on location.

What are your next professional goals, creative plans?Improving my photographic eye. Improving my postproduction. Improving my network and marketing. I want to learn, learn, learn. My creative plans? There are numerous ideas and concepts on my wishlist. If i amlucky, i’ll meet the right people and find the right places to fulfill thesedreams.

Few words for a new photographers? The earlier you start, the earlier you mature. Trust in your passion for photog-raphy and create confidence. Approach and treat the model respectfully. If he or she feels good and trusts you, you will get great results.

I’m 28 years old and I live in a garage in Savannah Georgia near beauti-ful Forsyth park and my favorite coffee place The Sentient Bean. Painter Troy Wandzel http://www.flickr.com/photos/troywandzel/ has a studio just a couple blocks from me. My grandfathers were in the military, an electrician and a paratrooper, a woodworker and a bootlegger. My mom is a school teacher my dad is a mechanic. I like radio shows, npr stuff like radiolab.

I went to college for filmmaking and many of the skillsets and technologies overlap with photography so I do both. I know I had a camera when I was little (preschool) but I dont know what my pictures were like and none have survived that I can find. I bought a canon ae-1 program off of ebay while I was in college to play with photography without having to spend so much money on motion picture film and developing, 1 frame at a time instead of 24 frames per second seemed thrifty to me. Then I got a digital camera and just shot and shot and shot and shot and shot. I read everything I could find on the internet and followed all sorts of stupid tutorials and asked questions of photographers I met in real life and learned a little bit here and there. I had some super talented friends to watch and learn from : Kevin Phillips, Wyatt Garfield and Colin Douglas Gray.

I’m glad when other people like my work but I’m more concerned with my own criticism or from trusted friends. I got my first paying gigs with a local magazine in savannah (they found me when I posted some pictures on fa-cebook) and spread through word of mouth and the internet to all over the place. I think I have a good handle of the basics so its easy for me to apply my photography skills to different situations. I like to make images, it doesnt matter so much to me what the content is. I fit stuff into a frame and I can tell stories and make people feel like they were somewhere they weren’t. I get bored if I can’t do different and new stuff all the time.

I’ve got a video on mtv right now with the savannah based band Cusses.

I have worked with alot of wonderful people sometimes forming teams for a while. There is a local production facility and artistic hub called Meddin Studios that I work with often. I’ve had 2 art director/production designers that I have loved working with: Trey Hock and Michael Boyle. My main partners in art and commerce are Skip Terpstra and David Andrews. Skip and I drove all over the

southeast taking 1798 portraits of people in the streets of Savannah, Austin, New Orleans, Oklahoma City ect. www.thehumansurvey.com

I spend most of my time on personal work. I have a blog that I update almost every single day with whatever interesting thing I can get into to take pictures www.nathanjonesphoto.com/bounce. It is mostly the local art scene and night life of savannah. I take commercial work so I can pay for the things I want to shoot and enjoy the variety and challenging conditions. The best jobs are fun creative challenging and lucrative. Some are boring. Thats work.

I spend much more time in front of a computer dealing with photos and busi-ness than I do taking photos. Its alot of time to look through thousands of photos every day. The blog stuff is usually not photoshopped, just jpegs right out of the camera, but the more stylized portfolio stuff I sometimes spend hours and hours or even days on.

I’ve only had one exhibition and that was the work from The Human Survey. Obama and Paula Deen checked it out. I heard that Obama remarked “Looks like America” pictures of Obama and Paula with my installation.

I’m working on some books to sell. One set will be documentary things regard-ing the local arts. The other will be my stylized images. I will continue to do the things I do. I would like to travel more and continue to grow. I’m working on a music video with Kidsyc Brandywine and hopefully another one with Jubee and the Morning After.

My advice to anyone is the same. You will be good at what you practice if you spend enough time and reflection on it. Do what you want to do. Be kind. Rewind.

A little about yourself. Getting started for you interest in photography? How do you become a photographer? My name is Greta Tuckute, I’m seventeen years old (born in October 1994) and I currently live in Aalborg, Denmark. I recently found an old diary from when I was at the age of eleven, where I enthusiastically describe how I’ve just received my first digital camera. So, I think I started out there. It was primarily photos of flowers and sunsets, but photography really caught my attention! A few years later my father bought an amateur DSLR camera, which I started experimenting with. I can thank my fa-ther for teaching me the basic techniques and encouraging me to continue. At the age of thirteen I started shooting my friends and doing more nature-work. From there it all started and since then photography has been my greatest passion. Now my main interest is portraits, beauty and travel photography. Who was first saw your pictures? When I was younger, it was always my father, since he also had an interest in photography. We could (and still can!) spend many hours experimenting with

You still very younger. How do you refer to the criticism? I am myself extremely self-critical and stubborn. In some ways I’m really a perfectionist and sometimes I’m not satisfied with my work at all. After a shoot I tend to ask myself: “What could I have done better or different?”, so I always strive for the best result. I read and listen to all the critique I receive and I’m incredibly thankful for it! Do you trust the opinion of friends when they view your photos? I usually trust my own taste and view on what I find aesthetic, but when you as a photographer edit photos for many, many hours in a row, you tend to become blind. Sometimes I really need the opinion of others and then I either ask my friends or family, and yes, I definitely listen to what they have to say. I love hearing others’ views and interpretations of my work. Inspiration fro you, what is it? I think my main sources of inspiration are traveling and people. I tend to get really inspired by people and something special about them, which I want to portray. Also, traveling fills me with inspiration. New and foreign places, which reminds me of that there is so much unexplored and undiscovered in the world. The feeling you get while traveling and everything falls perfectly into place. Name People That Has Been your inspiration? Photographers: Lara Jade, Nirrimi Firebrace, Hedi Slimane, Patrick De-marchelier, Signe Vilstrup. Moreover, I’m very inspired by the director and artist Tim Burton, the painter Salvador Dali and the writer Jonathan Safran Foer. When you look at your portfolio it seems that you can work in absolutely any genre. How do you as well clearly shoot people, and extremely attrac-tive landscape? I work in different genres, yes! I haven’t really thought about it, but I really enjoy both shooting people and nature. When I shoot people I tend to think that it’s my favorite genre of photography, but when I shoot nature I always think that it’s what I love to do the most!

49

Page 50: Pattern Magazine №3

Obviously you love b&w photos! What is your relationship with the color? I personally think that most pictures work great in B&W, while a few pictures are absolutely spectacular in colour! How do you decide which picture will be next? This plan, or is improvisa-tion? Usually I plan my shoots. It starts with researching inspiration and looking for new, interesting faces. Imagining how locations, styling and different pho-tographic techniques would turn out. That part is usually planned and I have a specific idea. On the shoot I improvise a lot, though! Model. People are out of your entourage, friends or relatives, or that people are completely unfamiliar to you? In the start I only shot my best friends. I still love working with my best friends – we’re really having a great time and it makes some things easier, that we are so close. Now I both shoot my friends and professional models. There are definitely also advantages of working with skilled models and that might make my job as a photographer easier. However, I really enjoy both! Some photographers, like photos taken by them a couple of days, and then find flaws in them. How long do they like you, after you’ve finished them? I usually don’t find flaws in them after a couple of days. When I’ve com-pleted a shoot, I’m done with everything and I have the finished, edited pho-tos I rarely change anything. Some of my favorite photos are old. There are memories attached to all photos.

Have you participated in any exhibitions? Or, perhaps, themselves orga-nized? Recently I had ten photos from my journeys exhibited here in Aalborg, where I live. However, one of my photos from Tanzania won a highly com-mended award in the international competition Environmental Photographer of the Year 2011 and it was exhibited in London. It was a huge experience and accomplishment. It was the first time I ever saw one of my photos exhibited in a gallery among other absolutely stunning pieces! Where do you most like to shoot - in studio or plainer?I think I prefer to shoot on interesting locations outdoors. I think it adds an

extra dimension to the portraits, if you for instance also work with the elements of nature. Studio photography is great, but sometimes lacks authenticity. What are your hobbies? Can you tell us what you do besides photogra-phy? Besides photography I go to school and naturally that’s a big part of my life. Also, I lovesports; tennis, kick boxing and running. What are your next professional goals, creative plans? Right now I just want to improve and develop myself personally and as an artist. I have a lot to learn. Meet new people, try out new ideas and visit new places. I have some interesting shoots coming up. Also, I’d love to shoot for fashion magazines and do bigger campaigns! That would be absolutely fantastic. What is your biggest dream? That’s a tough one! Right now my biggest dream is to experience the world. Jump on the next plane with a backpack containing my camera and travel without any plans or responsibilities. See what the world has to offer and where it might take me.

How do you become a photographer? And how long you involved in pho-tography? I became a photographer, three years ago, maybe 2.5 does nothing to tell about it, I can only say that the first shoot with an old camera, than I decided buy the SLR Sony H-3 called such. I really enjoyed doing it. I have ideas began to emerge, and then it just sucked, and then of course the camera in a creative plan was to limit my options and decided to buy a DSLR, well, then everything went traveled.

What is your “picture” and what feelings and emotions you want to transfer it into the picture? Photography for me - it’s probably a means of expression of his own thoughts, this is the choice and ability to think photographically! What are the emotions I want to convey? There is no such. You look, you will have some emotions, your friend looks at him any other emotions, it’s hard to explain, but I do not want to convey (the fear, hatred, anger)

What are you inspired? Inspiration is the music (post-processing with music “Two Steps From Hell”), movies, books, street, girlfriend, friends, yes, everything is an inspiration, the idea can come at any time!

How much time do you spend on training? About once in the head there is a great idea, I can break at any time, but alas, have to adapt models well, and the shooting, I try to make a great photo of approximately 2-3 hours.

How do you create a series of interesting work with these girls? As for the series “Dreams” - specifically, I did not want to create a series of shots, I got the idea one day to photograph the girl in the cold, it was winter and the thermometer was around -27 you represent, we met a girl and she bravely withstood the 1.5 hour shoting, of course we did four doubles, 20 minutes, so we have reaches the place she quickly undressed and in a dress on a tree in 3 minutes would be peeled back and we ran to the car to warm it here, and the idea all this, because the picture has turned out some sort of a fairy tale, and I wanted to continue to do something like that

How long do you like your shots and how fast you are beginning your next project? I like all my shots, but my new one good shot, I love more than the previ-ous ones.

What are your hobbies? What to do besides photography? Photography is my hobby. I do not earn it, and do not really want a couple of weddings photographed, and realized that it was not mine - it’s not for the soul Well yes, and even a game of FIFA 12 for playstation I am a master!

Are there any creative plans for the future? Yes, there are plans, but they are, you will learn later.

Give advice to new photographers. Beginners can give advice to persevere in their goal if - it is you really like and you get great pleasure from this, but if not, then the deal is not worth it.

Manuel Orero is a photographer who was born in Valencia, Spain. Orero Fotografia, is emerging as a referent in social and author photography through the last two years. As a matter of fact, many prizes and awards have been achieved by this 35 years old photographer. There is always an intention of making feel, and not teaching, with his photography, the world that surrounds him and the many different forms to interpret it. When I was 14, there was a photo studio near my parents house “Estu-dio Escutia”. Thanks to the owner who send me on different errands, her weekly payments, etc… I could afford to buy a reflex camera and there was when I started to learn by observing. Before this, my passion was (and it already is) literature. Writing has made me grown up in my writing skill, and it has also helped me with photography.

To be honest, I don’t think, I don’t premeditate: I improvise. When I take pictures, I try to inmortalize things that can be felt, more than contemplated. If we are talking about a work, a social book, advertisements, etc… I try to insinuate. Every thing is a mix, I try that the person who is looking at the picture could imagine the context, and draw a story. Anyone that doesn’t make me feel indifferent. It is said that Art comes out in the worst mood moments, but it is not my case. Sunny or rainy, it is all a fact of improvisation. I haven’t found yet that mood that makes me ask: Why am I not taking good pictures? I hardly use post-production software. And it is not a topic. In fact, I usu-ally shoot in JPG directly, with fixed paramaters in my digital camera. Some light, contrast, tone and that’s enough. I am not fond of wildly processed images. I think it make lose the photographic esence. I prefer working in low light conditions, and if the weather is cloud. That’s great!! Why? Because I think that the light is more homogeneous. It is one of the photography premises, it helps you working in a better way and it lets you play with the light.

Being a model is easy. All you need is by appropriate external data and the availability of free time. The latter, for a very serious student of the faculty is very difficult to be compared, in this business model is seriously engaged in difficult and it has become a hobby of mine.
