MSFD requirements

The Marine Strategy Framework Directive:

• requires Member States to put in place measures to achieve

Good Environmental Status (GES) in their marine waters by

2020.

• requires MS to cooperate to ensure that the measures

required to achieve GES are coherent and coordinated

across the marine region or sub-region

Supports UK Government and Devolved Administrations’ vision for

“clean, healthy, safe, productive and biologically diverse oceans

and seas”

Marine Monitoring Consultation

Our approach:

• Descriptor by descriptor

• Reminders of the status of the relevant descriptor and the

relevant UK targets and indicators

• Proposed monitoring programmes

• Degree of coordination

• How the proposed monitoring programme meets the

requirements of the directive

• Any gaps and issues

8

Build on previous retail surveys of seafood and enhance with new investigations into contaminant levels in seafood extracted

Track and record licensing applications to identify of any proposed developments large enough to have the potential to alter hydrographical conditions

What do we want?

Question 1: Are the proposed monitoring programmes sufficient to

meet requirements of the Directive?

Question 2: Are the proposed monitoring programmes for this

Descriptor sufficient to guide progress towards the achievement of

GES, and the related targets?

Question 3: are any additional monitoring programmes needed in

order to achieve GES and the related targets for this Descriptor?

Question 4: Do you have any suggestions for additional or more

effective monitoring programmes?
