Every Child is Important (Information from the Australian Childhood Foundation) Child’s play is a parents business Play is one of the most important needs children have. At the heart of play is fun. It is through play that children do much of their learning. Play fuels all aspects of healthy development

Running, kicking and throwing balls helps children develop balance and co-ordination Singing and rhyming games help with language development Puzzles and problem solving games help children’s intellectual development Turn-taking and sharing in play help develop important relationship skills and self-control Building relationships and resilience

Play is an important way that children can express and work through their feelings. Through watching and joining in children’s play, you can gain insight into how your child is feeling and thinking. Parents play a crucial role in children’s play

Joining in play builds positive relationships between you and your children in a climate of fun. Playing with your children promotes opportunities for you to support them as they experiment with new skills.

The most positive reinforcement for children comes from the approval and praise of a parent. Playing with children

Playing activities should be at the right level for your child. Let your child lead the play. Don’t take over Ask your children what they would like you to do as part of the play Allow enough time for play Don’t compete with younger children. This

can discourage them from wanting to play. Be patient if your child wants to repeat the

same play over and over. New skills require practice. Stay enthusiastic

Appreciate and encourage their efforts, no matter the outcome.

Look for opportunities to engage in play at any time.

Most of all have fun and laugh with your children For further information http://www.childhood.org.au/

Week 3 is now upon us and I hope everyone is continuing to keep safe and maintaining a positive outlook during

this time. With the school adopting Seesaw and the Learning Matrix, as part of our learning pathway, there is a

component of work that focuses on encouraging students to write.

Research has shown, that reading improves the quality of writing amongst children. If your child reads a good book,

associations with better writing skills, is also developed. Reading enables students to be exposed to general

vocabulary, word study and content-specific vocabulary. Through reading, students are are able to view the

author’s techniques, that they too-can apply within their own writing.

Reflective Journals are a great way to practice the mechanics behind writing. Not only does this mode of writing

encourage children to acknowledge their feelings, but offers them real-life opportunities to write events that have

happened and provides reasoning for their thoughts and actions.

Providing opportunities to ‘spark’ children’s interests to write is key. Use every day moments together to converse

and develop enriched dialogue to discuss, explore, question and probe ideas. Encourage your child to write about

what they’ve seen, heard or felt.

Form connections with real-world contexts that students are connected to. Authentic experiences, encourages the

young writer to have the opportunity to write ideas more freely.

Ideas can include:

-writing a letter to a family member

-creating a book review on a given text

-creating a shopping list

-writing a procedure on how to make a cake

-note taking

-drawing pictures and creating a story

Writing is a fantastic medium for self-expression, exploration and enabling the opportunity for one’s ideas to be

heard, seen and read by an audience.

This week, I have set our students an activity (if they so chose to participate), in being able to create their own

Magical Mini Garden. Instructions are below for those interested in participating.

Students who take on this task voluntarily, I would like you to send me a photo/picture of your mini magical garden,

but most importantly please send through a copy of your writing.

Your piece of writing can reflect your:

-procedure on how you created your garden

-a short quick write about the task

-a short story based on your garden

-a poem about your creation or

-an explanation on your garden design

For those wanting to share their writing and photos/pictures of their garden, please email to [email protected], so

we can add your work in upcoming newsletters.

In short, engaging students to write for a purpose, is key to being informed and staying connected.

A.McQueen once stated, ‘There is no better designer than nature.’ Happy gardening and writing everyone.

I look forward to seeing what our students have created and most importantly, what they’ve written!

Who likes making sun catchers? I love the way the sun comes through or bounces off them and

makes beautiful colours everywhere.

So this week I thought we could create sun catchers. They could be stuck to a window or just

hanging outside, it is totally up to you.

I would love to see your creations! Please email chappy at [email protected] a photo of

your sun catcher and I will display it in the next newsletter. I have included some pictures to help

you.

Please have fun with this experience and I cannot wait to see your pictures.

Code Camp has been running weekly after-school classes at over 150 schools every term for the last 6 years.

Unfortunately with the current global crisis and governmental advice, it is clear that our in-person sessions cannot take

place this term.

However, there is some exciting news - Code Camp After-School is now available online!

Our team has been working around the clock over the past few weeks to create a new online program that

encapsulates the fun and engaging learning environment that children across Australia expect when attending one of

our courses. The holidays have given us a great opportunity to test our online courses with over 2,500 students

taking part in paid one-hour sessions. We are confident we have got the formula right!

We will be running our online sessions on Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday afternoons and also Saturday mornings

so parents will have a variety of times to choose from. Children will be supported through the tutorials with our Live

Tech Support Team which is made up of our very best facilitators.

The program starts week commencing 27th April for 8 weeks. Due to our reduced facilitator costs, we want to pass

those savings on to the parents. The new online after-school price is $160 and the Creative Kids Rebate is available

for NSW families.

Parents can book in by following this link: https://www.codecamp.com.au/online-after-school-programs

Code Camp online means we can offer students:

1. A variety of levels for children of different ages and coding experience 2. A reduced price 3. Flexibility regarding session times

length, and will ensure students continuing learning in an engaging environment, whilst continuing

to enjoy their passion for chess.

Gardiner Chess will also be running 3 different tournaments each week:

Tuesday Blitz Tournaments @ 3.30pm (paid)

Thursday Rapid Tournaments @ 3.30pm (paid)

Explaining COVID-19 to children.

It’s important to give our children facts, not opinions. Children understand more than we sometimes

assume. The video link below is from Canada however a good resource with appropriate explanation for

younger children.

Education Queensland have also put this together to help explain.
