PLAYERS TO WATCH

Albury PSOllie Mack #37Ollie is a tall midfielder with great speed and agility. He can weave in and out of packs and hit up his targets with high efficiency. Ollie is as tough as nails and loves to tackle. He also enjoys pushing forward and kicking goals. When Ollie plays well the team lifts with him.

Ben Hyman #57 Ben is a key defender with a fantastic ability to read the play and put himself in sports where the ball will be. He plays in a similar way to Jeremy McGovern, intercepting the ball and then rebounding off half back. He has a long, accurate kick and is rarely beaten in one-on-one contests.

Dudley PSLouis-Jac Skinner #2 Louis plays for the Cardiff Hawks and is Dudley’s top goal scorer. He was selected to represent the Hunter in the PSSA State AFL competition. Louis plays hard and shows great speed and exceptional goal kicking and marking skills.

Rex Wardle #6Rex plays for the Warners Bay Bulldogs and lives and breathes Australian Rules Football. He was selected to represent the Hunter in the PSSA State AFL competition. Rex is a tough all-round player. He goes hard at the ball, takes outstanding overhead marks and prides himself on his accurate kick.

Flinders PSJarryd White #8 Our only player who plays AFL outside school. Fast, great hands, vision, long kick.

Jaiden Robinson #17 Natural athlete who takes to any sport he plays. Regularly a deep PSSA representative - in sports ranging from cricket to Rugby League and soccer.

Knox Grammar Preparatory School‘The Knox Grammar Preparatory team has enjoyed their journey through the Paul Kelly Cup Zone and Regional Gala Days to the State Finals and is looking forward to competing against other schools from around New South Wales and ACT.’

Lindsay Park PSEmerson McCrea Emerson plays predominantly in the ruck. Standing at a towering 6 foot 2, Emerson also possesses an impressive leap meaning she rarely gets beaten in the hit-outs and often give her players first use of the ball moving forward. A dangerous target up front, Emerson has kicked multiple goals on a number of occasions throughout the tournament so far.

Layla Katrivessis Layla is a no-nonsense, destructive teammate who plays mainly in the back half. A solid defender who does not shirk a collision, Layla aggressively wins her own ball and gives her team confidence and self-belief as a result.

Radford College Amber Smith Gibson #7 Amber is an incredibly talented young athlete who pushes herself in competition to always be better. She is humble in her abilities which allows her to be an exceptional team player. Keep your eye on her agility, strength and accuracy with kicks. She is a strong tackler and often able to read the play to intercept or coordinate her team to gain control.

Amelia Sutherland #1 Amelia is new to ball and contact sports, but this has not stopped her from embracing AFL. She was the fastest sprinter in the ACT competitions, easily out pacing her competitors. She has used this speed to out manoeuvre the opposition and is often seen sprinting down the sideline heading for the goals. She has worked hard on her kicking and often surprises herself with long, accurate kicks.

St Catherine’s Catholic College Alex NeylandSelected in the Maitland/Newcastle AFL squad, Alex reads the flight of the ball well and is a strong contested mark. She is also a great ball winner and tackler.

Molly ThomasMolly is blessed with great speed and balance; Molly is the only left-footer on the team. These attributes combined with her accurate kicking make her a very dangerous player to opposing teams.

St John the Baptist Zoe WardZoe is tough, aggressive and extremely competitive which makes her a very formidable opponent. She has an excellent set of hands and her goal kicking has improved out of sight. She comes from excellent football pedigree, with her grandfather having played for North Melbourne. No wonder she is such a talented footballer.

Emily JacobsenEmily is the only player on our list who had even played AFL before and her talent shows out on the field. She is a beautiful kick, reads the game well and knows where the goals are.

Trinity Anglican College AlburyAudrey Hogg #7Midfielder who is extremely consistent. Definitely not scared of the ball, keeps her teammates in the game, as she loves a good handball.

Claudia Hocking #22A hard and exceptionally tough player who doesn’t mind a bit of physicality. Was once bitten by a snake. Three days later the snake died.

Chloe Sproule #13Key forward, able to kick a goal from any angle. Definitely outshines brother, Zac Sproule, current AFL Giants player.

Issy McKerlie #16 Silky mover who consistently finds the footy. Just a natural with the football in her hand, a real ball magnet.

Luella Aldridge #9 Strong CHB. Looks like Jane plays like Tarzan. Loves to take the game on.

Steph Ramsdell #6 Fast midfielder who is involved in everything. Proves that you do not have to be big to be a great tackler.

Wattle Grove PS Shekiera Crouch Shekiera is a talented sportsperson who has been playing AFL for the last 4 years. Outside of school, she plays for the Liverpool Eagles U12s and was recently selected to participate in the Peter Miller Academy training. Shekiera is known for her ability to tackle, her short-kicks and her long-kicks, as well as her goal-kicking skills. She is a loyal supporter of the Giants and would love a future as a professional AFL player.

Amity Yeoman Amity goes about her game with a minimum of fuss, but she is a force to be reckoned with. She has been playing AFL for 3 years and displays a natural gift. Amity is best known for taking brilliant marks and her kicking skills. She is strong in both attack and defence. She enjoys playing in the U12 team for the Liverpool Eagles and has also participated in the South West Sydney Academy of Sport’s AFL program.

Wilkins PSElla Kinslor #7If you are looking for Ella on the field she will inevitably be in the centre of the action, tackling opponents, running the ball out of defence or kicking goals up front. She doesn’t mind where she plays, so long as she can get her hands on the Sherrin.

Goldie Van Dijk #11 Goldie is half Dutch but has seamlessly made the transition to Australian rules football. She is the team’s rock in defence, reading the play well and swooping in from full back to clean up and get the ball away. Up front she is strong at winning the ball, holding off opponents and sending the footy between the sticks.

Rosa Williams #18 The Wilkins team captain, and a serious Richmond Tigers fan, she is a hard-running midfielder with an accurate kick and a strong tackle. Whether she is captaining her club team or school team, you won’t hear her too much on the field; she leads mostly by example.

RULES

Playing GroundModified Ground. Cones can be used to mark each zone.

The Team• the team shall consist of 12

players with any number of reserves. We recommend a squad size of 18 players (max 6 on the bench).

• The team shall consist of 4 forwards, 4 centers & 4 defenders.

• Players are to remain in nominated position for the entire half. Once ball-up has taken place, players may move out of zone.

• We recommend changing player positions throughout the game so that everyone can experience a different position.

• Interchange or replacement of injured players may take place at any time. The new player taking the field must play the replaced players position until the end of the half.

Playing Time• 2x10 min halves with a 3 min

half time and 7mins between matches.

• Duration is subject to change and at the determination of AFL NSW/ACT staff.

Start of Play• The game shall be started by a

ball-up (and restarted after each goal) between two players in the center of the ground. Players contesting the ball-up should be of similar size and will be rotated.

• A Player may not grab the ball at the ball-up and play on. They must tap the ball and cannot play the ball again until another player has touched it.

• Players to stay within their zones until the ball-up.

Out of BoundsWhen the ball goes out of bounds a free kick is awarded against the team to last touch the ball. A player cannot kick for goal from an out of bounds free kick. If the umpire cannot determine which team last touched the ball, then play will be restarted by a ball-up 2m from the boundary where the ball went out of bounds.

TacklingModified Tackling – Players can hold and bear hug an opponent in possession of the ball with their hands between the shoulder and knees only.

NB: Umpires can award a free kick against a tackle that is considered unnecessarily rough (e.g. A tackle that forces an opponent to the ground).

Players can:• Non-contact shepherd

Players cannot:• Throw another player to the

ground

• Push the opponent in the back

NB: Umpires will award a free kick against the team that engages with any of the above two offenses.

MarkA free kick is awarded to any player who fairly catches a kick by another player (known as a mark) providing the kick travels at least 5m.

Bouncing the BallA player in possession of and running with the ball is permitted to bounce the ball once only before kicking or handballing. The ball must be bounced once a player travels 10m.

Kicking the Ball Off the GroundPlayers are not permitted to deliberately kick the ball off the ground.

Scoring• A goal (6 points) is awarded when

the ball is kicked between the two major goal posts without being touched by the opposition.

• If the ball is touched before passing the two major posts or passes between the minor and major posts, 1 point is awarded.

• After a goal is scored play restarts with a ball-up in the centre. After a point is scored play restarts with a kick from the defending team from between the two major posts.

• Goals can only be scored by forwards (who are designated by a braid/wristband) within their teams forward zone. Scores from other positions or from outside the forward zone do not count and then a ball-up takes place from the place the kick was taken.

Order Off RulePlayers may be ordered from the field for rough play or abusive language. Time period is left to the umpire’s discretion and in consultation with the Match Day Manager. The time period can extend to further matches on the day, including finals.

Spirit of the GameThe umpire has the right to send off or supply an official warning to a player that displays un-sportsman like behavior such as taunting the opposition or encouraging rough play.
